Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body, and there are 16 different types. However, the most important ones that represent 80 to 90% of all our collagen, are types one and three which are present in the skin.
Most of my patients ask me how to boost collagen because as we age and our collagen depletes, our skin changes in fundamental ways. When you start to see fine lines and wrinkles, you guessed it, you're losing collagen!
The good news is that there are proven ways to increase collagen levels in your skin. In today’s video, I share the secrets of the best ingredients and treatments to boost your collagen so you can firm and smooth your skin to access your own grown-up glow!
As always, thank you so much for watching and for all your support!

I find that aging has alot to do with family genes. When I spoke to my dermatologist thats what he said 90 percent family genes. But i think its important to take care of yourself anyway. I notice in my 40's my skin was nice . But in my 50's ..I needed extra help in maintaining a youthful look and skin products and sunscreen wasnt enough . I believe that family genes dictates how well you will look as you age

Could I please know what’s your opinion on collagen supplements/powder? And if you think it’s actually useful, may I know what brand you recommend? Because I know it’s quite controversial since the majority of the peptides dissolves itself in the stomach and blocks the recognition of the protein as a whole…

@Meenakshi No procedures yet although I will be consulting with a surgeon in the spring. I eat very carefully. I genuinely enjoy fresh vegetables and fruit. Plus I’m absolutely addicted to green tea. I use sunscreen religiously which is important as I have fair skin and live in a sunny climate. I apply Vitamin C in the morning and am now experimenting with retinols and may try prescription strength after consultation with my doctor. I sincerely appreciate what Dr Sam teaches us about nutrition. I live in a community where procedures are normal for women past a certain age. Most look youthful well into old age. But the biggest distinguishing factors are: exercise, nutrition, and sunscreen. Sunscreen is essential here for women of any heritage or background.

Can I get microneedling if pregnant or breastfeeding? How about the other procedures?
@TheJZab
@TheJZab 2 года назад
I had microneedling and had an awful down time. I had severe redness that lasted 7 days, and pinkness which lingered for a couple of weeks! It was not an easy procedure for me and I really didn't see any good results. I understand I was unlucky and maybe the needle depth was too long for my first time. I think my practitioner also used a strong serum on me. Anyway, I just wanted to comment because it's so often advertised as a quick and easy procedure with little to no down time but this was not my experience at all. Thanks for the informative video!
@shanira99
@shanira99 2 года назад
Interesting, i had microneedling done last Thursday. (Disclaimer i have a dark skin color) I was told that often microneedling is done too deeply. During the procedure i had a very tiny bit of blood, only small dots. She did tell me i have thick skin and she had to adjust the settings to go a bit deeper. But still not very deep. Right after the procedure my face was bright red. And in the evening the redness was mostly gone. My skin felt tight and dry. The next day my skin was back to normal. At the moment I notice i have a break out. The esthetician told me its breakout that would surface in the near future. I can't say anything about the results because it'll take a few more weeks before they are noticable.
@TheJZab
@TheJZab 2 года назад
@@shanira99 that is very interesting. I have very pale fair skin, so I do think it was definitely too deep a needle depth for me. I'm glad your redness wasn't bad. I didn't really see any results from one session because I think you're meant to have a few, but I wasn't willing to suffer the down time again!

Don’t give up hope, Shirley…. I have type 1 rosacea too… and it was really bad until about a year ago, even water could sting my face sometimes and the flushing was awful every single day. Now I am able to tolerate 0.05% tretinoin in the pm, and 5% glycolic acid every now and then in the mornings… I could use it more from the tolerance POV, but I don’t need to use it often as the tret does a good enough job. I got to this point through very slowly and gradually introducing tret after reading some pub med papers saying how tret has helped type 1 rosacea due to thickening the dermis and (I assume) providing a better protective cushion for capillaries there. All I know for sure is that I don’t hardly flush any more and my skin has got way less sensitive as a result, I believe, of less flushing over time. Icing on the cake has been the addition of 20% azelaic acid in the mornings (thanks to a recommendation by Dr Sam! :-) which helped bring my redness down hugely. Prior to all of that the only thing that helped was multiple ipl sessions.. I hope this helps, Shirley, I know from my own experience that rosacea can be way more life limiting than people might imagine… good luck 🥰

That’s a definite no! What Anthony said it correct and it can also cause severe scarring or infections. Micro needling should only be done on clear, smooth skin. Clear up the acne first. Best would be to get it done in a dermatologist’s office.

Helpful video, thank you. I'm turning 33 tomorrow and recently noticed that my skin is looking a little bit less plump so I'm keen to do more to boost my collagen! I've used sunscreen daily since I was 20 so I'm sure that'll help but I'm quite new to retinoids. I'm a bit confused as I've been using the 'gold standard' tretinoin for 5 months now but I feel I got better results when using your nightly serum. I find this confusing as granactive retinoid isn't as strong as tretinoin. I'm not sure whether to continue with tret or switch back to nightly serum.

Don't stop using the Tretinoin. It takes time. It slows down aging. Use it in combination with lifestyle, diet, exercise, and vitamins, and the serum you're already using. You'll thank me in 20 years for this advice.

I’ve tried laser resurfacing four times in four months, with no reduction in wrinkles. The fourth time the surgeon performed the procedure four free. Three of those times he set the laser on the deepest settings, without any luck. I’ve also tried fillers for my lips and around my mouth, the first time the treatments were two weeks apart, the second and third treatments were one month apart-but no results, my skin simply absorbed them completely! Right now, I’m considering fat transfers or microneedling with radiofrequency. I’m at a loss for what not do!!

Totally missed the obvious. 30% of collagen is made from the amino acid glycine. Although glycine can be produced from some other amino acids in emergency situations, the demand for it is great. But, the modern diet is really deficient. Glycine powder costs only $13/ pound. Other sources include consuming animal collagen (which gets digested into amino acids) or collagen peptide supplements.

I have ordered a topical Pycnolgenol 5% , why is there a warning about using peptides with this product? If I could understand why , what its doing , I can work around this warning . Is it a PH or an scavenger thing? One in the AM and under my oils or moisturizer and or sunscreen. Then the peptides with my actives in the PM. I'm in healthcare and have A love of formulation in skincare. I see such skin conditions that I KNOW i can fix and don't have it in an Order. They just are so backwoods and dumb. You have to get tretinoin as a prescription from your dr./dermatologist. So you can make an appointment and ask for it, if it’s right for you, they’ll most likely prescribe it. You can also try over the counter retinol. Brands like neutrogena, cerave, Olay, roc. Easy to find and work well.
@laynaaa

This is not something you can just buy, not legally and safely, in most countries at least. Like someone already commented, it needs to be prescribed by a doctor. There are services online like Dermatica in the UK, where you upload your pictures, dermatologists view them and prescribe you retinoids and you get you cream via post. I get it this way. It comes out so much cheaper than seeing a dermatologist privately every month or 2.

Find another derm. You might have irritation, but probably not an allergic reaction. Start slow. One night a week for a while (3-4 weeks) until you have little to no irritation, then bump it up to 2 night a week (like every Tuesday & Friday nights). Increase until you’re applying 5-7 nights a week. Use a good fragrance free moisturizer (CeraVe, Vanicream …) before you put on the tretinoin and an spf of 30 or higher every day. Don’t add any other actives until your skin has acclimated to the tretinoin.
@MariyaMagija
@MariyaMagija 2 года назад
Mmm. . . skincare allergies are not seasonal. You’re either allergic to tretinoin all year round, or not at all. The dermatologist is either just plain bad, or didn’t do a good job explaining something. Maybe they meant that if you have strong seasonal allergies in the summer, your skin will be extra sensitive during that time and tretinoin will be harder to tolerate.
