It’s not uncommon for patients to be surprised when I suggest they skip toner or scrubs. Sometimes they feel a little crestfallen when I politely suggest they’d be better off without a particular oil they were quite attached to.
In this video, I share 5 dont's that I stick with consistently.

Arik Leo face and body oils are amazing they can sort out multitude of skin issues, but I would stay clear from mineral oil, that is a petrol derivative that basically does nothing for our skin other then building a layer and can clog pores

All things 7 by paula actually mineral oil is great as it’s been clinically proven not to be pore clogging and is the oil with the least amount of contact allergies and is also the best oil for sensitive skin. You can tell because that’s why it’s used in basically all baby products and also helps repair the skin barrier so go buy some mineral oil oh and btw it’s safe for fungal acne too

Science based is so overrated. Just claimed that it is, and everyone's just blindly believe it. Profit based is more likey I'd say. You never know whose genuine and whose not. You're experience tells more than just any doctor who gives prescription and 'medicine' that don't work or making it even worse, or just temporarily ease the symptoms. More like guessing than science based. A lot of time they wonder of how the patient heal them self. So much for science based. 🙄

This is such a good advice and so necessary. I'm a bit tired of all this "influencer" culture were people give and sometimes sell advice when they have no clue of dermatology. In a era of free access to information we live with misinformation and deception. Online gurus can't substitute a visit to the derm. Is perhaps worth to mention the spritz products to use during the day and cleansers full of actives.

I appreciate reviews of things like cosmetics, where they determine formulations and wear tests however you're exactly right, especially when it comes to the skin care, I dont even bother. Influencers typically have no "education," on the matter. I just watched Dr. Dray's review of Tatcha skin care and it's a great example of over-hyped skincare that we consumers have no knowledge on and blindly buy. I appreciate the dermatologists that share their opinions on YT. I've learned a lot and can take what I find helpful and apply and discard what doesnt suit me.

I've been using face oils for a really long time now and it has saved my dry skin! I've never gotten any bumps and my skin has never gotten dull. I think face oils is really subjective. @Rhea390
@Rhea390 5 лет назад
Sabrin Roble I've lately been trying out the body shop oils of life face oil which has been working pretty well for me. It was to hydrate my skin a lot. But I couple this with a body butter I make at home using cocoa butter, olive oil, coconut oil and essential oils like lavender and argan oil. I usually eyeball the proportions. Mix them together and put it in the fridge for a bit till it gets hard. After you take it oil then whip it. I don't add any wax into it. The cocoa butter hold it together. You get a lotiony texture. I use the latter all over my body too cause it really moisturizes the skin! And it doesn't leave you greasy at all, it absorbs into the skin. I actually have dry skin all over, even my under eyes. My T-zone is slightly normal depending on the weather. And yes I do drink a lot of water so it's not a dehydration issue.
@youdontknowme3603
@youdontknowme3603 5 лет назад
Just letting you know, your body shop oil is not hydrating your skin. It is impossible for an oil to be hydrating, only water based products and drinking water can do this. Oils can only nourish the skin. Your body butter mix sounds great though 🙂

I agree with you dra Sam in almost everything. But as I suffer from eczema and have over all very dry skin, face oils save my face in the winter. But again, GOOD QUALITY OILS. @@AnUrbanGypsy You did good. Oil won't fix an eczema patch, I have to bought specific creams and pomades with corticosteroids to deal with a patch because is the only thing that will work when I'm having a crisis. I use the oil for maintenance, since I've been using them it elongates the time between my crisis and keep it more controlled. But I wouldn't recommend olive oil either, somenthing more like jojoba, sunflower, safflower, marula, squalane, baobab, avocato, moringa or buriti. Foaming agents are detergents/surfactants and cannot foam at an an acidic pH. The very best they could be is neutral pH which is still higher than our skin. There are studies comparing with just plain water that show very interesting changes in pH over time in the water only group showing lasting effects from the use of soaps and foaming cleansers on skin pH.

A foaming cleanser and a cleanser that is turned into foam or comes out as foam due to a mechanical process in the packaging pump are not the same thing. You can froth milk, that doesn't mean milk has surfactants.
@MissMagic
@MissMagic 5 лет назад
So no hidden surfactants (ones that are less common or are used in lesser amounts so place further down the ingredient list) like say, stearic acid, stearate or cocamidopropyl betaine? I don't believe that for a second. There will be a pH buffer in there so your test strips will show you what you want and a surfactant that will kick in as soon as it has chance whether it's got air pushed through it or is a gel. Look at the ingredients and see what each of them are before you believe claims.

She being a dermatologist does not mean we are supposed blindly follow her; just like any other dermatologist, she's giving us guidelines that reflect HER skincare philosophy. There are other dermatologist who would recommend at least four out of the five items she avoids because that reflects THEIR skincare philosophy.
@huntsman145
@huntsman145 5 лет назад
@Shaun Soule Of course we're not supposed to blindly follow her. But as a doctor she's not sharing a 'philosophy' but facts that are supported by science and studies. What People are sharing in the comments is ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE. Which is not to mean it's not true for them personally, but there's a big difference between the two and the latter is NOT a valid argument against the former. But science based or anecdotal, everyone is free to believe whatever they want.

You're supposed to use a gentle facial cleanser, never soap (bar soap, hand soap, body soap etc) or foaming cleanser. Soap could be even worse than the foaming cleanser. The difference between a gentle cleanser and a foaming one is in the ingredients, more specifically in the type of surfactant in the cleanser. If you see the words lauryl ou laureth in the ingredients list, its probably a foaming cleanser and you should avoid it.

I've been trying for the 1st time a foaming cleanser. To be honest the experience itself is pretty nice because of the foam, but in a couple of days I immediately noticed much more acne and oiliness (which is very unusual for me) I imagine it's because as a second ingredient it has denatured alcool, which from what I've read really dries the skin and increased the production of oil and secretions in the skin.

I agree with you, except for MAYBE the face oil (I'm testing out 2 on my REALLY dry skin right now, but I don't have issues with acne). My #1 is over exfoliation (manual) ... it really caused a lot of damage to my skin, and it took me over a year to figure out why I was suddenly getting contact dermatitis and eczema from nearly all makeup, skincare and chemical sunscreen. I was using an electric spin brush twice a day, and with a scrub cleanser! 🤤 I also would add no alcohol (the bad kind, like denatured)
@maggieprice357
@maggieprice357 5 лет назад
Fragrance is one I avoid completely, both natural and synthetic. Essential oils in skincare have caused many allergic reactions for me over the years, especially neem oil. I also never use toners. I know there are some great hydrating ones out there but honestly I just can't be bothered. I also avoid denatured alcohol. I'm also with Dr. Sam on the facial oil thing EXCEPT that Rosehip Seed oil has been really great for my skin in terms of pigmentation and overall glow. However, I am still lazy with skincare so I don't use it religiously. But any other face oil I have ever tried has broken me out (coconut oil was the worst) and I avoid products that contain them. I usually stick with the Cera Ve Hydrating Cleanser both morning and night, tretinoin 0.1%, a vitamin c serum, Cera Ve PM, and Cera Ve AM SPF. I am currently pregnant so I have been using azelaic acid instead of tretinoin the past 4 months.

No, no, NO!!! By the way, I've seen non-alcohol makeup setting sprays but I would imagine they just don't work as well. Same with alcohol-free deodorants.

@@disremembrance ELF's original setting spray does not contain alcohol and it works fairly well. I have used it on occasion (once every few months for particularly important events) and thought it worked fine. I compared it to the UD All Nighter and thought they were comparable for my very oily skin (meaning neither prevented makeup from eventually melting off in 98 degree, 80 percent humidity in NYC or DC sweltering summers, but definitely prevented makeup from melting off in 10 minutes, which would typically happen to me under those conditions).

This was so invaluable. I always smile that we pat our faces so gently after cleansing, but then don't think twice about taking a rough exfoliating product or machine to basically rip that gentle barrier off. Thanks
@nairabee245
@nairabee245 5 лет назад
Carrie LaMarr people need to stop being dramatic about physical exfoliants. People aren’t exfoliating their face with crushed rocks. And machines like the vanity spin planet brush have different settings to gently buff away at dead skin, dirt, and oils as needed. Say for example if my face isn’t as dirty on some days I mix my physical scrub with my gel cleanser (which has aha & bha in it) to tone it down to it’s still slightly exfoliating but it’s got a gentler consistency. And people pat their skin after cleaning because the barrier is slightly weakened from the cleansing. And then the hydrating & moisturizing process begins where we reinforce that barrier again. And our moisturizers and oils have a better chance of being absorbed if our skin is clear of impurities and dirt. And As invaluable as this was so many people in the comments disagree coz her routine runs a high risk of not cleansing the skin enough and making acne and hyper pigmentation worse.
@nairabee245
@nairabee245 5 лет назад
Carrie LaMarr there’s so much middle ground she missed. You don’t need to eradicate these things from ur routine altogether. There are many foam cleansers that do their job well with it making the skin dry and cracked. There and many mild physical exfoliants that also have a cream consistency and also have chemical exfoliants as well the most common being salicylic acid. And of course if ur using Vaseline or mineral oil or coconut oil on ur face u run a higher risk if clogged pores but most people use facial oils very low on the pore clogging scale. There’s A LOT of middle ground that wasn’t covered. Just do what feels right to ur skin, don’t over do anything and definitely don’t under do anything either. And it’s very easy to tell when ur skin doesn’t like something coz it’ll show in pigment, color, tone, pores, and sometimes in more visible and disrespectful ways like acne, bumps, and blackheads.
@isitlina
@isitlina 5 лет назад
if you mix your physical scrubs with aha/bha youre most probably destabilising the acids and rendering them useless tho so....
@nairabee245
@nairabee245 5 лет назад
lina it’s more to give my physical scrub more of a gel consistency anyways so🤷🏾‍♀️😌 the chemical exfoliants is just an extra boost. My main point in doing that and mentioning in that comment is that u can alter ur exfoliants and skin routine in general to fit what u need in that moment. Also the scrub I use ALREADY had the chemical exfoliants MIXED IN pre packaged. But for when I need a more gentle clean I basically mix my gentle gel cleaners (with chemical exfoliants already mixed in) to “water down” my physical scrub (again with the chemical exfoliants already mixed )to more a a gelatinous mixture and a more gentle facial scrub with the chemical exfoliants already mixed from both sides but the texture isn’t as harsh. Hope that made sense. I was a little all over the place.
@nairabee245
@nairabee245 5 лет назад
lina foot note so u won’t have to read all that’s basically all my cleansers and exfoliants have chemical exfoliants already in the ingredients list prepackaged. The only reason I mix is to change texture and harshness on my skin.

I disagree with your ban of the facial oils. However I agree that one should be very selective about which oils to use, and only use good quality ones. I was sceptical initially when reading Caroline Hirons’ recommendation for them, but after trying the ones from Zelens, I am a convert. My seborrhoeic dermatitis has completely calmed down and even the patch of sun induced pigmentation on my cheek is a lot less noticeable. Zelens products are expensive, but a little goes a long way and you get what you pay for.

I disagree, some foaming cleansers have outstanding results without over drying like the brand cetaphil. Also, for the sunscreens that act as physical instead of chemical, do not require rubbing. I highly advise anyone who is watching this to consult with other dermatologists as well, as various providers advise very different things.

Parnia Behinaein, I agree with you. After years of listening to dermatologists and other skin professionals, I went against their advice and started using a foaming cleanser . . . it took my skin from just okay, to great. Additionally, I disagree with her about physical exfoliating. I tried just using chemical exfoliating for 1.5 years and my skin looked like hers (ie very shiny and plastic-y looking; not a good look for me at my age). So I now use a physical scrub every day and my skin looks so much more “natural” than with just a chemical exfoliant. I didn’t agree with much in this video at all, but I will check out some of her other videos because I like her tone and presentation.

I agree. Ever since I began skincare I rarely used a foaming cleanser. I may have purchased them but afterwards went back to non-foaming cleansers (ie. cream cleansers, clay cleansers, balm cleansers) however my skin continually had deep breakouts and even worse, really deep blackheads. And this is all because everywhere I hear that these foaming agents are bad, carcinogenic, stripping, etc. however these past 3 months I've used a foaming cleanser consistently and OMG the results are so good for my skin! My blackheads have reduced dramatically and my breakouts are so much better. I think the key thing that dermatologists forget is to listen to the needs of the patients. Don't rule out something because others say it isn't good for them - now /that's/ bad science!

Paula Begoun also favours chemical exfoliants over physical, but I find that using leave-on acids (AHAs, BHAs) too often is simply not an option for my rosacea-prone skin. Too much redness! If I need to quickly remove some dead skin flakes before applying moisturiser and SPF/foundation, I use a gentle and creamy oatmeal-based scrub. A leave-on chemical exfoliator would take too long for that anyway.
@nairabee245
@nairabee245 5 лет назад
Laura Hardy thank you!!!👌🏾 I disagreed with half the things she said on this video. I have dry textured skin and hyper pigmentation but I sweat a lot so a daily physical exfoliant helps buff away any oil dirt and dead skin cells on my face. What should be her advice is not to overdo anything. Not cleaning ur skin properly can lead to buildup, acne etc. and over cleansing or being too rough with ur skin can make the problem worse. Find a balance. But there are foaming cleansers out there that do their job well and do not over dry the skin. They’re are mild physical exfoliants out there that have chemical exfoliants in then as well. Of course if ur exfoliating with crushed granite rock or something that’s insanely abrasive ur skin is gonna tear up. And no one is out here slapping Vaseline, coconut, or mineral oil on their face. Obviously the faceoils people use are low on the pore clogging scale. U shouldn’t just get rid of those things altogether, there’s A LOT of middle ground to work with. The true advice is to listen to ur skin and do what works for u. coz even two people with the exact same skin can lead opposite lifestyles and live in opposite climates.

I agree about fragrance (serves no purpose for skin health and is highly problematic) and spray sunscreens (not sufficiently protective). But the other 3 are dependent on individual skin conditions and needs as well as continuing advances in skincare. These days, not all foaming cleansers are stripping and some oilier complexions just can't tolerate cream, lotion or oil based cleansers. I gave up physical exfoliants for over a year fueled by fears of micro tears and found that even with regular use of chemical exfoliants, my products were just not being absorbed as well as when I was using scrubs and my skin also became bumpy, duller and sallow. I now use a very fine grained scrub just once a week, in conjunction with daily chemical exfoliants. My skin's looking and feeling much better. Facial oils are not just trend driven - there is sound science behind them. You have to choose the right oil for your skin type. Higher linoleic acid content oils for oily acne prone skins and higher oleic acid content oils for drier, parched skins. Get the right ratio of oleic to linoleic acid in your facial oils, for *your* skin type and you're on your way to happier, beautiful skin. Hemp seed oil is a game changer for my acne/breakout prone skin. The clogging, under the skin bumpiness and breakouts are drastically reduced without the harsh drying effects of conventional acne treatments. No "one fits all". Find out what works for you.

Agree for the most part, but oils are a necessity for someone like me with intensely dry skin. My natural sebum production is quite low, and so it’s necessary to handle that through oils. Went with the trend of gentle ass cleansers like cream and gel cleansers and my face didn’t feel clean at all still felt slightly oily. So I just stopped kidding myself and use what works best for me. I use both physical and chemical exfoliation. I have a face scrub/wash with salicylic acid in it and that I use everyday and even my gentle cleansers have either salicylic, glycolic, lactic, or citric acid in it. And then I tone my face with VERY WATERED DOWN acv which is packed with AHAs moisturize either with a cream and or oil and my skin is clear and glowing 24/7 now.

I wish i got this advice earlier. I've finally discovered this all on my own but it took me maybe 15 years?! I've only used "facial oils" on my eczema when i have a flare up.

A quick question: Are there any oils-squalane, for example-that you would recommend for sensitive, breakout prone skin? Or would you recommend avoiding them all together? Thank you in advance for the clarification.

Megan Rooney squalane has been very good for my sensitive acne prone skin😊

Some people with breakout prone skin don't get on with squalane though I love it! I like to blend it with other lightweight oils but it really depends of what your skin is sensitive to. Definitely avoid any fragranced oils, and try not to go overboard with oils if you're breakout prone. I would definitely avoid high oleic oils, and go for light high linoleic oils (hempseed, safflower, cucumber seed etc), jojoba is also nice. To start just add a drop of oil to your regular moisturiser!

Is Vitamin C serum really that good or is it all hype? I used the Drunk Elephant one for a year and not sure if I should repurchase. I don't feel like it did anything.

just buy ascorbic acid powder cheap and make your own. check the ph with strips and your good to go making it fresh it each morning.

Its almost impossible to get vit c serum that is stable. Antioxidants as a whole are not stable in skincare for the most part. They degrade as soon as you put it on your skin. I would take a vit c supplement. If youre looking for skin brightening ingredients try an BHA or AHA like glycolic acid. And drunk Elephant is ridiculously over priced. Trust me I have been in high end cos/skincare for over 20 years. It's all bunk. I also worked as an ops manager for Sephora as well as Dillards. I say dont waste your money. Oh and I wouldnt recommend buying just ascorbic acid powder and making your own. Youre just asking for trouble.

evidently Im special and it works only on me. I use it with a cotton mask.The serum you make on your own will be no more risk than the stuff you purchase over the counter.Slight burns if your skin is sensitive.

@Krys Bell thank you!!! Side note - one of my best friends is super smart and she spells her name 'krys' too!! Its short for Krystel.

@Krys Bell Thank you. Ill read it since Im always interested in skin care. I had a scar on my forehead since age 12 and I treated it with vit c , ferullic ,vit e, retin a and microneedling. that spot of my skin is still nicer than the rest of my face. But its possible it was the needling and retin a and not the C.

Thank you, Dr! I love your videos! I think one thing I'm learning is to simplify my skincare routine, and avoiding fragrances. The US has an ok market with skincare, but the U.K. is so much better! I'm currently using: Ponds cold cream makeup remover, coconut oil (to cleanse for now since my skin seems sensitive to anything else I try), neutrogena moisturizer (looking to switch out bc it has added fragrance). I top it with vaseline in the winter if I go out or before bed. Do you thing cleansing balms would be a good option for sensitive skin? Thanks again for everything!

I'm sorry but face oils have saved my skin. Just because you and the majority of the world have normal combination skin, this doesn't mean all people do. So no, this particular piece of advice does not apply to everybody. I have incredibly dry and sensitive skin that gets irritated very easily especially during the winter. Using oils on my face have completely transformed my skin for the better.

I hate it when I see people reviewing stuff and say that it smells good. SO many are ignorant about fragrance being bad for skin.

So great to hear we should avoid oil! I try it again and again because the ‘experts’ say its good, but it always brings out more spots! Will be pairing back my routine. X

I tried a foaming of cleanser only once and i have to say sure my makeup was gone but also my akin moisture. My skin felt soo dry and the sides of my face were almost flaky. Learned my lesson.

I agree with you about the trendy jumping-on-the-band-wagon oils but after struggling for years with mild/moderate acne, I can't tell you how much the Oil Cleansing method changed my life for the better. I just use pure oils, non comedogenic - hazelnut oil or sweet almond oil. Even after 7 years I still look in the mirror and am amazed I have clear skin now. 😊 I had a terrible reaction to some makeup which blocked every pore on my chin, after 4 months I was despairing, I discovered the Oil Cleansing method just using sweet almond oil and I had results overnight, it's been the best thing I've ever done for my acne prone skin.

Living in a dry climate (Colorado USA) make me a fan of oils as I mentioned in another comment. I also enjoy very fine gentle physical exfoliation all over my body followed by a good dose of moisture. Lancer is one of my favorites. My MD husband swears by spray sunscreen (I use lotion/cream, and EltaMD is my go to). He rubs it in, though. He believes spray sunscreen is easier to apply to his hairy legs, and he never burns despite being fair and blue eyed. I definitely agree with using fragrance free products even outside my skincare routine.
