I'm 47 and want to add box training to my daily workouts, after many years of watching box. I'm just trying to stay fit... still, having found this channel makes it all more exciting. I'm very grateful.
I generally think beginners should start in a gym, but these vids are perfect for the guys who don't have time to be formally trained or the guys who want to try to learn the basics before going into a boxing gym. Nice one really enjoyed it
Thank you for the compliment. Your exactly right on the reasons for the different stances. With boxing it's as much about being mobile on your feet as it is about getting power in the back hand. The boxer's stance allows explosive movement in and out, vital in the modern amateur game. Kick boxers tend to be much more square on (to block and kick) and so sacrifice mobility. Other martial arts, especially Wing Chun, use a very similar stance to boxers. Not that I'm an expert on Wing Chun!
You're the man! I've just started going back to scratch and rebuilding my foundation. Just feeling comfortable with the stance and playing around with weight transfer from front to back, getting a solid feel. I'm usually flat footed so when I started transferring weight towards the toes, and truly letting all my weight relax down through the legs, feet then toes, holy shit do the calves light up, I've never felt my calves like this before, just from going back to feeling out my fighting stance. Cheers Fran!
I'm 55 and I have just started having lessons, thank you for your time 🙏 This video will never age .. Your basic rules is going to be a amazing asset to my training. Thank you,Fran. I'm looking forward in watching more ☺️ and growing.. thank you sir 🙏
heay i started boxing 3 day's ago bcz i was bodybuilder i left gym 2 years ago bcz i got ill and didn't get backin shape soo i left and now i am learning boxing thx man for theses all playlist ur my coach now ♥️🥊
finally a proper detailed video on how your stance should be when you box. great idea putting the tape on the floor, it made explaining the stance alot easier. well done!
Thank you so much, by far the best boxing teacher on internet. It helped me a lot to improve some begginer doubts I had about punches, I'll follow all your video instructions and hope to learn some good boxing techniques with you. Thank you again for the great video and clear instructions.
Cheers mate. There's quite a bit of southpaw-specific stuff on the MyBoxingCoach site including skills vids, reports and some fight analysis articles. All worth checking out if you're a southpaw.
Check out the video on the straight right hand. My guess is that your problem will be an under-rotation of the hips, which has the consequence of lessening the power but also the length of the shot.
@mysticpiggyx I've not checked out the Dempsey book, but I have noticed a lot of guys refer to it on the forums. I'll check it out. Funny you mention it, I'm just putting together a Foundation video and eBook training course. Comments like your help to keep me going, because it's very hard work!!!! Not long now though, next 3 to 4 weeks hopefully and they'll be ready. Thanks again mate
- keep feet aligned with opponent even when moving. squaring up => You are a bigger target - chin down - "look through your eyebrows" - do not let your face past your lead knee - off balance and hard to move
the best video ever on youtube , demonstrating what to do exactly .. man u are the best .. all ur videos are great .. any recommendations for a beginner? example.. do u recommend cardio training like jogging to enhance breathing ability ? for how long? ... what else a beginner should do ? thnx in advance
Appreciate your content brother, needed something like this for the longest currently an amateur boxer, my biggest problem has always been my footwork and balance I always felt that either my feet were to close or to wide.
@jackpopple11 Hey, sorry for delay. Truth is it can vary slightly. Just make sure that they are always in a position to be moved very slightly to block incoming shots. Your approach sounds perfectly fine to me. In fact, it sounds just as I tend to hold my back hand (right hand).
Hi. Sorry for the delay. Not really clear on what you are trying to describe. Sounds a little like you might need to relax a little more. It might be that you are forcing your head down rather than letting it 'rest' down.
2:45 bodyweught on back leg 3:50 staying on toes 4:10 most important Never allow weight to go to the front leg becz I take power opponent shot And I dont have any power shot 4:30 toes knee head Never allow the head get past the knee or knee past toes
just found your site and vids, really good, thanks. I know you have a text version already available, but I was wandering will you be including southpaw vids in the future.
hello coach, first i just want to say i have learnt so much from your videos, you seem very principled and highly experienced, one simple question about the boxing stance. do you stand on your toes on both legs or just the rear leg ?
Great demonstration!!!!! very simple to understand not like other videos make it hard to explain how the stances work. I have a question what if you know how to fight on both sides? how you do call that? because i find very easy to fight as a southpaw and orthodox i do it all the time.
:-) I'm sure a gum shield would hold. Get a good coach and let's avoid losing anymore of those teeth! 25 is not at all too old to start! You can box in the amateurs up until the age of 40 now.
I have great hands, but I'm also wanting to get into MMA. How can I transfer this stance in an MMA fight? I still want to have a killer Right cross and not too narrow. Also great video coach! I've seen and kept commong to this video sense the beginning!
Obviously a beginner should master the orthodox stance and learn the basics but a some really good fighters are either fake southpaws or switch fighters.
Hi Fran. I'm a beginner and finding your videos to be so helpful in learning correct fundamentals. Do you think it's beneficial to train in both orthodox and southpaw stances? There are some top level mma fighters such as Wonderboy Thompson who frequently switch stances to be more unpredictable. Most martial arts train both sides, so I'm wondering if there is a reason why boxers tend to develop only one side. Thanks!
+FreekeeChakra Hi, interesting question. Really down to dominance. We have switch hitters, you can either do it or you can't. All boxers tend to have a stance in which they are most effective. I for instance am utterly useless as a southpaw and so never try to go southpaw except for very specific actions. Hope this helps.
+Fran Sands Thanks very much, Fran. It does help. It seems to make sense to master the dominant side and fight using our best weapons. I really enjoy your videos. You're a great teacher.
I like your videos (this is great one btw) but should your palms be turned toward your face? If the palms are turned in, doesn't that hinder your ability to catch punches? Is this more of a European stance/style?
See the Freddie Roach and Lamon Brewster stance your stance leaves no room for slipping two things a gonna happen. First the left hook and cross are gonna land spinning you to the right.
Great video for beginners like myself Fran! I came across this interesting article comparing what they call the 'orthodox' boxing stance (used by the likes of Sugar Ray Robinson, Joe Louis and their contemporaries) - head sunk towards the rear shoulder and palms not turned in - with the 'modern' stance - head in the centre between shoulders and palms turned in. What is your opinion on the effectiveness of these two stances and do you reckon the stance that you're teaching is more 'orthodox' or 'modern'? Thanks!
Hi Fran, nice vid. One question, my stance is the peek a boo stance. Although i do sought of long range boxing, keeping the oponent at bay with jabs, crosses and also overhand rights. Sometimes i weave in the opponent to do some hooks to finish the opponent. Would it be better if i do the stance in the video or the peek a boo stance. I know that i must choose what is comfortable for me but i just wanted to get your opinion. Thank you Fran.
Self-Defense Library I've never really coached the falling step to be honest but transferring the weight forward can make incoming shots a ton more hurtful!
Hi there, I box southpaw , but I'm right handed, I've always felt comfortable this way and can pack a punch with my left too, should I try orthodox or stick with southpaw, cheers???
Is there anything wrong with being a right handed soutpaw? My coach tells me it's hard to train me and that my footwork sucks, but it's mainly because I'm not comfortable in the orthodox stance and that's the way he wants to train me because I'm right-handed and that ,"i should get used to orthodox." It was that same way in other sports; I hold a goofy (southpaw) stance in skateboarding, wake-boarding, and snowboarding rather than having a regular (orthodox) stance. I've heard that my lead won't be as strong, but wouldn't it be better to have fast hands, good footwork, and a weaker lead than a strong lead with bad footwork and slower hand speed? Left this comment in your old vid. Didn't realize that you remade all your vids in HD.
As a boxer/fighter/skater you should invest in being able to switch from either stance when the situation calls for it even though you we all have a preferred stance, as for foot work and hand strength/speed you should know that the only way you are going to improve is hours of training to master your technique just like getting a nice pop on you ollie and there are no shortcuts like everything else
Great channel! About the stance, my coach wants me to stand more with my toes pointing to the front. Specially the back foot. What is your take on it? Thank you
Your back foot is facing 90 degrees outside when you are in the stance. I keep my back foot at about 45 degrees and heel up on balls of the feet. I also keep the front foot just a little bit to the inside not so much as you do. What's your thoughts on that? Cheers
Hi there. I'm quite relaxed on rear foot position. Many boxers change the positioning of that foot multiple times in a fight depending upon tactics. Front foot - always 45 degrees.
The coach is correct back foot 90 degrees heel down keeps your body closed not open for attack and you have more power with rear cross. If heel up 45 degrees your squared up more open and you're already turned halfway for cross has less power.
It's more of a general guideline for boxers to have their dominate side in the back: right handers like their right foot in the back, left up front, most of the time. Some boxers like Oscar De La Jolla were lefties and liked to have their left in the from: or dominate side in the front like you. Tyson was right handed but he would switch to a south paw stance during combos. It really does not matter as long as you can actually fight with what you got. I think the boxing teacher was really just laying down what "usually" works best for most people but not everybody.
ismael, growing up I got into more than 30 fights. I always fought with my right foot front, left foot back and I'm a righty (or at least I thought I was) I am ambidextrous I do a lot of things with my left that righties would normally do with their right. I still to this day stand right foot front, left foot back and I am not able to fight any other way. i guess you can say I have power with both hands, this is also why Im pretty good at drumming.
+The Bruise Crew Balls of your feet, although the front foot can flatten once in a while. Don't let the back foot go flat though, that's very important
I would but it doesnt feel natural for me in a southpaw stance, I feel i leave my jab hanging after throwing it and don't feel comfortable in the stance
No that stance will not work because you can't slip or shift from that stance! Your gonna get hit 1-2-3-5-2 seen it enough times. check out lost art of shifting by barefisted! learn defence or your gonna lose all the fighters in your gym.
