I was taught to make boxing removable so access needs no tears from the customer. We would tile the boxing and then fix it with a thin bead of silicon. Water proof, strong and removed in seconds if needed.

Thanks so much , I have just tried boxing pipes which go around the top of my walls in a small hallway 😳4 pipes 2 for central heating and 2 for hot and cold water . So I thought polystyrene would be good idea as I have loads cut it all 😳what a mess lol, then tried to glue it all together ... apparently you need a type of glu for this that I don't have 😤. So I'm doing plan B tomorrow your way

Nicely done but I would probably go with 18mm battens and 12mm marine grade play to make the boxed in section smaller. If the floor batten had been fixed before the waste pipe it could potentially be smaller still. Just thinking out loud, not criticising 👍

I think the main problem would be driving the screws in. My M12 hammer drill is pretty small and it's still 50mm across. The screws would end up crooked

Andy Coyne that’s how cowboys plug the walls with screws. Hit them in the plug opens the jaws - job done, forget about taking them out ( not my job attitude) 🤨
@matejpivoluska8573
@matejpivoluska8573 5 лет назад
You can tap them for installing and unscrew them for removing. Special screw+plug. That srew has special assymetric thread that allows you installing with hammer. Nothing wrong with them if you have brick or concrete wall.

Technique wise well done and clearly explained but if the top wall batten was the full width of the box there would be no need for extra ply on top. The floor batten looks to be set out twice the width of the waste pipe, wasting space. I would never box pipes in with plasterboard at floor level and at aprox 150mm high 6mm ply would be perfectly strong enough, 18mm is way over the top.

I've got ugly pipes on display. However my questions are (a) is there a way the screws can hidden from the final finish so it looks neat? (B) you will see the joins between adjacent planks of wood. Are you better cutting them the whole length of the pipes to be boxed?
@richardforshaw-smith7111
@richardforshaw-smith7111 3 года назад
Use a counter sink to allow the screw head to go below the surface depth of the plywood, then use filler to hide them. Or plasterboard instead if ply, then plaster skim over.
