Welcome to Kona Academy. In this episode we gonna learn you how to brake.
If we approach land or another object on the water at too high a speed, we may quickly need to brake and swerve aside. In most cases, it's less risky to hit a solid object with the side of the board than directly with the bow.
The most effective and quickest way to brake is to place the paddle blade behind your feet and let the paddle drag in the water.
Here's how you can train in this skill. The goal is to be able to completely stop before reaching the object.
- Start by paddling at a leisurely pace toward land or another object.
- Stand with your feet in a parallel position and hold the paddle as you would during normal paddling.
- Then, insert the paddle blade perpendicular to the board behind your feet on the side you're paddling, by bending your knees.
- When we bend our knees, the center of gravity also lowers, providing more power and stability.
- Lean back into a sitting position and transfer your body weight onto the paddle with the lower arm extended.
- The more body weight you put on the paddle, the faster the board will brake.
- You can also enhance the braking effect by moving the paddle blade forward in the water.
- By keeping the blade submerged at all times, the board will also begin to turn simultaneously. This will be in the same direction as the side of the board you're paddling on.
That was some good advices how to break on a SUP.
