How To Breathe for Better Health, Movement, & Posture | Why You Should Stop Belly Breathing! | Day 7

Belly breathing is not possible, because your lungs are in your ribcage. Someone who cues you to take a belly breath is well-intentioned and attempting to get you to fill the lungs fully and efficiently (instead of taking a shallow breath). The movement of the expansion of the abdomen on inhalation is caused by the diaphragm pushing the abdominal organs down which gives the sensation that one is breathing into the belly. While belly breathing is essentially trying to address what I am in this video there is one big difference. Your attention/intention is powerful, and if you focus on breathing into your belly only the front body is expanded, which creates contraction in the back body, especially the lower back which also created neck tension because the spine is a single unit and tension moves to corresponding curves. Over time. When done repetitively tension builds from this and becomes chronic. One could teach to focus on expanding a ball or orb in the abdomen and although they would not be precise or accurate, this would be less harmful than cueing someone to breathe into their belly, as most people identify the belly as being in the front. I could look at a students posture and tell you what type of breathing cue they’re following, as posture and breath are one. A “belly breather” as I have described will have an exaggerated low back curve. For more on this please watch this video: • Diaphragmatic Breathin...
Day 7 Is Breathwork. Rest is just as important as movement for the body. Taking at least 1 day a week to rest from your movement practice is crucial in order for the body to rest, repair and come back stronger. This doesn’t mean you need total rest, you can do some
Active recovery, like a long brisk walk, a jog, or whatever your body is already conditioned for that may not be a strain on the nervous system. This all depends on your current level of athleticism/ physical activity.

A few years ago I had a hospital appointment and they needed to check my breathing. The nurse said I was a lazy breather! (I don't smoke). This really helped me to focus on my breathing and feel more in tune with my body. Thanks again Tim.

My breath and body awareness has improved significantly from learning and by practicing with you. As i have become more conscious my breath has become a tool of sorts - serving both an indicator of my physical/mental/emotional state at any given moment and to allow for greater peace and relaxation when stressed. It’s such a gift, Thanks so much Tim!

I'm not swimming fit, but am able to manage several strokes between breaths for the first time ever. I'm sure it is the stretching and breath training! Thanks TIm!

Hey Tim, messaging from Sydney, Australia. I've been going to a physio for neck issues which are related to acute muscle tension that has built up around my rib cage. This is why my left and right scapula, as well as muscles around the top of my spine have ceased up. Your yoga work that focuses on breathing, and other stretches that stretch the rib cage area are proving to be super effective. My physio pointed me in the right direction but your videos are providing more relief than anything she's been able to give me. Pretty amazing. Dig your work! Thank you.

Finally someone who knows what they’re talking about. As a muscle tension therapist I spend vast amounts of time trying to activate the diaphragm. It’s challenging. Especially if they’re posture is rounded. Their abdominals are just on and locked tight and that is one of the obstacles to proper diaphragmatic breathing.

Yeah, this helped with fine tuning my breathing. I'm pretty good at the long and slow breathing in and out but this definitely helped with filling in my ribs more than my stomach.

Yes! I discovered diaaphragmatic breathing a while ago -- don't even remember how I learned it -- and it makes so much difference about everything.

Thanks Tim, I've always found breathing into my ribcage more relaxing and easier to inhale more oxygen than belly breathing!

Hi Tim, I’ve been practicing with you for a while and really appreciate your approach. Do you have any books you can Recommend for deeper knowledge?

Light on pranayama is great. Also, this is a great video that explains the anatomy of the breath in much more detail.

Wonderful video, Tim. Thank you. So informative. I was wondering, does this count as "Day 7" or will that video be uploaded later today? Thank you very much again!

This is the second time ive watched this video and i "get it" more each time. Should our lower core (belly button and down) be activated while doing this breathe work? Thank you for these videos. You're easy to follow and explain things well. I'm so proud of myself for sticking it out!
