Hey. Loving the technique and excursuses. Trying to bring my vocals back after 13 years out of the band. Your videos have helped me get back to where I was and beyond. I have one question about the finger and chest adjustment. You say start at posture and move till the finger is up. ? But I noticed you didn’t point straight up aswell. So is there a degree of angle in which I missed. What’s the “rule of thumb “for that brother ?

I need LESS AIR for false chord screams than for clean singing? Ah I've been doing this all wrong!!! And my lower rib cage definitely doesn't expand that much when I breathe. I have so much I need to practice - thanks so much for this video! 👏👏👏👏
@ExtremeVocalInstitute
@ExtremeVocalInstitute 4 года назад
Common misconception, you’re definitely not alone. The more open the sound, the more you’ll need to support with air pressure. The more you distort the travel path for the sound to leave your body, the more you have to back off so you don’t overpower your vocal cords! 🙏 Glad you found this helpful

ive been practicing fry and false chords for about a year now. this helps so much with all of that with my airflow and being able to scream more efficently. ive always noticed i havent been able to scream as much as the professionals. im not a professional but this will help a great deal with being able to last just as long as they do before i need to take another breath. and i also would take just split second loner breaths compared to them. im not them but this will just help so much to make me as close to them as possible but in my own way

I've been loving your videos lately, I'm not sure why I didn't discover your channel sooner. Your knowledge and ability to clearly communicate as well as demonstrate are unreal. Thank you for this! I've been trying to learn for (a few weeks shy of) a year now and I've been able to work with false cord screams, though I definitely could've used this video as few as 4 months back when I realized that the reason I was barely able to practice for an entire song was because I misunderstood how much force I needed to use. I think using the term "screaming" set me up for failure in my mind. I only yesterday found a video that helped me understand the technique for fry screaming - I had been making that creaking (I call it 'The Grudge noise') happen down closer to my chest. Someone here on RU-vid gave me a great visual of how to close off the vocal cords by pretending I'm lifting something heavy and then focusing on making The Grudge noise up closer to my sinus cavity, vibrating off the soft palate. I haven't yet been able to transition that into a scream yet but ...and here's the reason I'm telling you this... your video this morning has properly set me up for success in ensuring I control the air pressure rather than forcing it because I'm not getting the sound I want yet. So thank you so much. Also your JFAC cover from the other day was incredible.
@ExtremeVocalInstitute
@ExtremeVocalInstitute 4 года назад
Thank you so much! Glad you’ve found this helpful. We really appreciate the feedback. We do try to avoid the term “screaming” for that exact reason. A lot of the terms that are used for metal vocals are misleading and often do more harm than good. This is also why a lot of classical vocal coaches encourage their students to avoid this style, because they also associate it with actual screaming which is quite damaging for the vocal cords. Good luck with your practicing! 🤘

My favourite line from any movie is when Yoda says to Luke, "...only what you take with you." I feel like alot of this is a more in-depth description of what I learned of breath support in high school choir. Though as I haven't practiced actual technique for this since COVID hit right in the middle of my senior year, I doubt I was doing this right all that much aside from at least vaguely being aware of pasture and breathing techniques existing. I'm going to consider starting EVI now. Thing is, I'm not really a screamer so never considered EVI, I dabble with screams, but in essence I like to sing GNR/Accept/Maiden/Priest/Metallica/Pantera (ok.. those are screams). I definitely should consider it! One question, how does it combine with 'Appoggio', the classical support which is sometimes is explained as a slight push from the very bottom of your abdominals. Would you rule that out completely when you say that you never have to actually engage abs?

I enjoy watching your videos, but I still don’t understand how you can get powerful aggressive vocals without putting force into it. Surely if you don’t put force then your scream will be weak.
@ExtremeVocalInstitute
@ExtremeVocalInstitute Год назад
The biggest hurdle is changing your perception of what a scream is. Our brains associate “screaming” with the wailing we all did as children (and maybe still do occasionally). So much of vocalizing is mental and the process of getting out of your own way to allow the sounds to happen in a balanced way instead of punching your way into it and using excess air which will cause fatigue, lightheadedness and can lead to damage over time. Think about fullness of the sound instead of power and you’ll find you can actually get a more intense sound without force. If you haven’t checked out this video it may help you a bit! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0cxP1gt8Rx0.html

What you’re experiencing is a mismanagement of air - either using too much or too little but either way what’s happening is you’re experiencing oxygen deprivation. If that happens, stop, scale back and think about how you’re going about producing the sound and try to balance your way into it differently

Any advice for someone who has no where to practice but the car? I know I can’t get a full comfortable breath while sitting down but I have no where else to practice

That’s definitely a tough one. If you have a closet that is filled with clothes that can act as a pretty good dampener for sound. There are some products out there that can help in this scenario, like the ISOVOX, but that depends on what your budget is. Maybe check and see if there’s any spaces that musicians can rent for practice in your area? Or if you have a friend that has a space you can practice. You might have to do some creative problem solving

@@nickfrancis3512 no problem, good luck! The good news is you can work on breathing also anywhere and that’s SO crucial to the foundation of your voice!
