I can relate to the distraction part when you are talking about the jumping jacks to make your body relax. I can access way more tones/sounds when I am just mindlessly walking around making screaming noises than I can when I try and purposefully practice to recreate them.

I have progressed so much from where I was from this video. An hour ago I was completely clueless but this gave me an actual foundation to build on! I never thought I would be able to scream at all. About 2 weeks ago I learned to use my diaphragm and could do only a short growl. I could barely pronounce words while growling. After just a few attempts at these warm up exercises I am going longer, pronouncing words/syllables easier and you just taught me how to fry scream. I also just sound better now. I am going to use this video daily for practice so thank you for these videos! You are helping me do something I have always dreamed of doing.

This was one of the most helpful videos that I've found on youtube! I'm female, and at 33 I got invited to replace a male vocalist in a.... Hmmm... I guess some form of grunge metal band? Like Nirvanah meets Megadeth with some Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam and Ozzy (post Black Sabbath) peppered in. I've been singing for 27 years, and 20 of them mostly jazz oriented music. Though I listen to mostly Black Dahlia Murder, Arch Enemy, Testament, Therapy, Prong etc, this has been kak hard! I only have 4 months to get some grit into my voice (my band members say that my clear vocals are good enough, but it does not portray the agro type of style of music and lyrics in my opinion. And who the fuck wants to be "good enough" anyway?). After 3 months, Aliki Katriou has been a FUCKING GREAT help, and this video is just sealing the deal!!! You so perfectly help to bring everything together, and the way you lay it out and give examples with your own vocals are just tremendous. THANK YOU SO FUCKING MUCH MAN!!!!

We cover that in this video! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rvQmyYR2k9Y.html The fullness that you hear in David’s screams is due to how relaxed he is. If you’re finding that your sound is thinner it may be because your method of producing it is based on constricting and tension. Hope that’s helpful! - Rilee (Co-owner)

Hey man. I love the videos on your channel. Very helpful. I have a question regarding activating the false chords. You mentioned that if you learn to activate them with the "sigh" method, you need to be careful to not teach yourself to become dependent on the "wind" fealing to activate the false chords. I think that is where I'm at. I struggle to activate the false chords just by themselves, and need a bit more air to get them going. In this case, how do you unlearn the need for that "wind" feeling? And how do you learn to activate only the false chords and with minimal effort?

These videos are amazing, I've learnt more from your past two videos than I have in the last few years. Thank you! Just a question - during the 'elongate' phase I'm running out of air. I can get to the 4 count, but struggle after that. Is this a sign I'm using too much air to activate the false chords? I try to use as little air as possible in the 'activate' stage, but end up taking huge breaths before each note in the elongate phase. I know that vocal teachers generally advise against taking in a lot of air before hitting a note, and prefer a 'conversation breath' or the amount of air you'd normally have in your lungs while talking (at least for normal singing). Melissa Cross talks about this in her first DVD. Is the elongate phase different, in that it's necessary to take in more air to keep the false chords activated for longer? I can sing a clean note for as long as I like without focusing on breathing deeply beforehand. If I try the same with false chord screaming I run out of air at the 2nd count. Just wondering how much air to use and whether I'm doing it wrong. Thanks again!
@ExtremeVocalInstitute
@ExtremeVocalInstitute 4 года назад
So glad that you find these videos helpful! 😊 Definitely seems like you’re using too much air! Check out our video on breathing for metal vocals (I’ll link below) and that might help you out a bit. Could also just be that you need to work on how quickly the air is escaping which has to do with air pressure control, hard to tell without seeing a video of you. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Wj-gqIPy_44.html

Hi, I want to ask is it weird that right after warming up your screams, if you suddenly stop doing any vocals for like 20-30min (because someone interrupted you etc), will your scream tone (especially for fry) be down like as if you used up most of your energy for your fry? Because that always happens to me.

This is so useful as so many others have mentioned , thanks! I'd like to ask something if i may. Apart from the technique, i suppose the better the physical condition someone is in, the easier it is to be able to perform without getting that tired and eventually getting hurt?
@ExtremeVocalInstitute
@ExtremeVocalInstitute 4 года назад
Being in good physical condition can absolutely make a difference in performance and generally not feeling like you’re getting burned out at the beginning of your set. Performing on stage is essentially cardio, especially if you’re someone who moves around a lot so doing regular work away from the stage will absolutely have an impact. Additionally, if you’re someone who gets out of breath early on in your set you’re more likely to push to get the sounds out which will lead to vocal damage in the future. We’re not saying everyone who does vocals needs to be an elite athlete but you do benefit from being in good condition.
@georgeplaskasoviths1460
@georgeplaskasoviths1460 4 года назад
@@ExtremeVocalInstitute yeah i totally understand! I, for example am overweight and work a desk job and i experience fatigue on shows or recordings..Inevitably most of the times i am unable to perform or even speak on my normal tone for a couple of days. This is making me to start considering being more active not just for my performance but most importantly for my health. Again, thank you so much, this channel is a fountain of much needed knowledge!
@ExtremeVocalInstitute
@ExtremeVocalInstitute 4 года назад
You’re definitely experiencing an imbalance of air then which is what leads to most vocal injuries. If you’re unable to even speak normally that means this imbalance is significant and you’re going to want to be careful moving forward. When you practice, focus on working on scaling back the amount of air pressure you use and see if by relaxing and balancing your way into your sound you can achieve the tone you want in a healthier way. Feel free to join our free Facebook community group for support from vocalists of all levels if you’re not already: facebook.com/groups/EVI.community/?ref=share
