Have you ever wondered how to breathe from diaphragm because someone told you that is the only way to breathe while singing? In this video, I am going to share my opinion about what you should be really doing when someone tells you to “breathe from your diaphragm”. The problem with this phrase, which is so overused among singers, is that is ambiguous and it means many different things to many different people.
By the way, can you sing with your diaphragm? Is it anatomically possible? I am going to share that information too, but more importantly, I am going to show you a breathing exercise for singing that you can do right now to improve your breathing technique for singing.
Watch this video and learn to breathe from your diaphragm while singing so that your singing becomes more powerful and easy.

Since singing is "sustained speaking", there must be an awareness taught of how to develop an elevated function of that muscle. Steady airflow is demonstrated, taught and exercised. Thank you for the info.

From the scientific perspective you are absolutely right, the diaphragm is a totally involuntary muscle and so for someone to tell anybody to "breath from it" is just plain ignorance. They also tested it with professional singers, and every time they asked them to do a supposed "supported" breath or sing a supported note everybody did something totally different.

In short, even trained singers do not breathe in the way they self-report, waste a lot of energy on that breathing, and just blurt out/parrot their teachers that they should "breathe from the diaphragm" when asked about their knowledge of actual vocal mechanics.
@healthyvoicetips
@healthyvoicetips 4 года назад
Hi @The Underachievers [NL] and thank you for your comments. I absolutely agree with you and I hope I conveyed that in this video. The phrase means nothing to me because it is vague and it can be interpreted in many different ways as you suggested. From my personal experience, this phrase causes more tension and unwanted movements when singing.
@healthyvoicetips
@healthyvoicetips 4 года назад
I use the phrase "breathe from the diaphragm" in this video because that is what singers ask me all the time. I cannot simply ignore the phrase and pretend that it does not exist when other people use it. But hopefully by explaining the "science" behind it, I can bring a little bit more clarity for some singers into this topic.

Hi Katarina, amazing tips. Could you explain how to support the sound when moving (walking) on the stage? Much appreciated. Rgds
@healthyvoicetips
@healthyvoicetips 3 года назад
Hi Inigo! That is a good question. Support for voice comes from the bigger muscles of the body. Your vocal folds are tiny and they can work freely if other muscles "support" them. So, I would suggest improving your overall stamina and endurance. Singing is a whole body work, not just a few muscles in your throat.

If you have a weak speaking voice, is there a way to diagnose whether the issue is with the diaphragm or the voice box?
@healthyvoicetips
@healthyvoicetips Год назад
A laryngologist can diagnose if there is an issue on the vocal folds or somewhere in the voice box. There is no direct way to "diagnose" a problem with the diaphragm but usually, an observation by a voice therapist can point to breathing discoordination. However, from my experience, vocal weakness does not have one cause but a few factors adding to the issue. I suggest that you have your voice properly evaluated by a laryngologist.

Katarina, I haven't seen you in quite sometime (well over a year). I enjoyed so many of your videos in the past. I'm a singer (long time trained tenor), and had contacted you a few times (through comments on YT and once by email, I believe). So, seeing you again, after a while, I have a question: I notice in your more current video titles that they seem to be more 'speech' oriented than when I first discovered you some years ago. Of course I know that proper use of the voice in speaking or singing, either one, follow many of the same healthy and proper principles, with some variations. However, my question, then, is are you more focused on speech therapy today and less as it may pertain to 'singing' per se than what I remember when first seeing you? I guess I'm asking, has your 'format' changed somewhat to an emphasis mostly on 'speech' therapy? Example: I remember that you had done, for instance, a video on 'appoggio' breath support for singers.

Hi and thank you for your comment. I can see you are my loyal follower who remembers my beginnings. You are absolutely right in noticing that I have evolved and changed my focus. I adjust to what people are asking me to do and also to what I think I can help with best. In the beginning, I was very much focused on singing and helping singers develop sustainable techniques. Over time, more and more people approached me with speaking difficulties and slowly my focus shifted. Today, I run a coaching program that helps people get rid of strain, tension and even pain when speaking. They include speakers, singers and musicians. However, the program is focused on the speaking voice. I realized that there are a lot of singing programs but very few that help people overcome difficulties in the speaking voice. I hope this explains and I hope that you still find relevant information in my videos today.

What should feel different while singing when you use this technique, also I feel like I can take less air in. Total noob btw, I want to imrove my singing in a casual way. In my opinion the tone of my voice is biggest problem, I am constantly unsure if my singing is as good in reality as in my head.

@@healthyvoicetips Wow thanks for such fast replay. One more question if I may. I heard a lot about finding true/natural voice. For me that technique where you humm first and then just sing it really works, but it is very hard to keep that saund. Can you point what i should research/practice for that.

When breathing from diaphragm should I also fill up my upper lungs too or no?

Your lungs will fill up if you want it or not.

I noticed that with exhalation, the ribs returned inward. I had a vocal coach tell me that when singing on the exhale, the diaphragm slowly comes back up, but to always keep the ribs in the expanded position even after exhalation. Should I be trying to keep my rib cage expanded even after exhalation?
@healthyvoicetips
@healthyvoicetips Год назад
It also depends on the style you are singing. In classical singing, an expanded ribcage will help with long sustained notes. For more contemporary styles, you may not need as much effort in the ribcage.

In this breathing do you feel your lower back expand, or feel like the lower back is filling up with air?

I feel it as expansion.

I have started to feel my ribs separate and my lower back muscles support. I was sore for a couple of days, but that’s gone now. I guess I’m using muscles that I hardly ever use.

Hello! This was really helpful. I just wonder, what does it mean if I can't inhale a lot of air because my stomach hurts? And also it starts making weird noises.
@healthyvoicetips
@healthyvoicetips 4 года назад
Hi Ileor, I am not quite sure why your stomach hurts. Is it maybe you inhale too much air or you try too hard, which causes tension in your stomach? Regarding the weird noises: does your stomach make weird noises or do the noises come from your throat?
@ileorsomh7314
@ileorsomh7314 4 года назад
@@healthyvoicetips They come from my stomach
@healthyvoicetips
@healthyvoicetips 4 года назад
Ileor, when you breathe deeper than usual (like in the exercise from the video), you are "massaging" your inner organs because the descending diaphragm is increasing the abdominal pressure. It is a gentle massage that can trigger movement of your intestines or stomach. Nothing to worry about.

@healthyvoicetips

It really does not matter if you breathe in through the nose or mouth. Sometimes, it is faster to inhale through the mouth. It really depends on what you are used to and what the vocal task requires. I would suggest that you practice both.

Breathing While Singing Is My Biggest Problem & I End Up Running Out Of Air & My Voice Ends Up Cracking About To Start Practicing Now
@healthyvoicetips
@healthyvoicetips 3 года назад
Running our of breath does not mean that you have a breathing issue. Also look at the vocal fold closure, which may leak air. Or look at diction, which may be causing some air loss.

So, should i breathe from diaphragam all the time or only while singing high pitch?
@healthyvoicetips
@healthyvoicetips 2 года назад
You sing with the diaphram all the time. it's not a matter of breathing from the diaphragm or not, it's about coordinating the muscles responsible for breathing and sound production.

It depends. When speaking, I recommend breathing through the nose. When singing, you can breathe through the mouth or nose, whatever suits your artistic goal best.
