In the military on long runs we sing cadence & at first it makes you feel like you can’t breathe but after you get used to it not only does it give you a rhythm but also forces you to breathe in less frequently. I still sing them in my head while running to this day 😅

@belowzeros
@belowzeros Год назад
@@FKA-91 I went through the same thing, my experience was it takes a lot of patience and thinking about breathing as a new runner. It also takes some time to find your natural cadences during those different types of breathing. Don't be discouraged because that time is probably between 3-6 months depending on what condition your body is in before starting to run. It's like anything, running, biking, weight training, it needs time to build and get your body used to it. this was a great video that helped me a lot.

@lennart2644
@lennart2644 10 месяцев назад
@@FKA-91 Maybe this helps, as it's what has helped me when practicing: In order to breathe slowly, you need to adjust your running pace accordingly. If you run too fast (which is a common thing for beginner runners), your body will automatically yearn for more oxygen and cause you to breathe faster and lose control. Take some time to experiment with a casual and "easy" pace that doesn't exhaust you and allows you to look around you and let your mind wander etc. Then gradually count the rhythm of your steps and breathe according to that rhythm -- the 4-in 4-out is one that I really enjoy for a steady pace. And please don't forget that your speed is irrelevant here, this is an endurance pace that focuses on sustainable running, not sprinting.

I’m a beginner-level runner who’s struggled with breathing while running for years. I’d gas out way too fast during a run, resorting to slow down to a brisk walk pace. The 3 breathing patterns explained in this video really help. I employed the slow-in/slow-out pattern and noticed an increase in my pace right off the bat. I ran farther before gassing out so soon - something I’ve been wanting to do for so long now. I’m constantly looking to improve my running and now I know what to focus on. Thanks a lot!

So am I the only one who runs in 5 beats? 3 in, 2 out with my steps. Works at every speed for me. Also, keeps your individual sets starting on opposite feet, which makes me feel more balanced for some reason. Also, this works pretty well to the song Take Five, by Dave Brubeck. Almost exact tempo he is running in this video, which is my same pace. All these other techniques, the slow one, the 2 beat one, they all give that lack of oxygen feeling. Try out the 5's, friends!

Loved the specifics in this video! Many videos on breathing are 10 minutes of "breathe through your nose into your stomach"! That doesn't really help when I'm out on the trail struggling. I've always done the 4/4 method, but when I went faster, I'd breathe IN 4 and OUT 2, but I'm definitely trying 2/4 tomorrow on my speed run! And way to go Nora, leaving that pup in the dust!

These days I discovered that your videos are really helping me. I was running with a friend and I started telling her something (a long story, by the way) and didn't get tired, lol. I was astonished. Thanks!!

Holyshit. His dog running and the car sound passing by in sync made me think like his dog straight up fostered the energy from Norse Gods.

When I was on Holliday there I could only find Crissy fields to run and the big Golden Gate park, I wish I knew about this area. Looks quite nice with great views.

Great video - very informative. And what a beautiful place to run with your dog!! I find I normally have a 3-in/3-out breathing pattern, and when I step up the pace it tends to be the outbreath that speeds up so I end up with a 3-in/2-out. Having watched this video I’m going to try consciously switching that to fast in / slow out.

Speaking as someone who has enjoyed running for about 30 years without ever getting particularly intense or technical about it, no matter what the distance or speed, inhale for 3 steps and exhale for 3 steps. It's as simple as that.

It would be helpful if you listed the 3 techniques in the “additional info” pull-down menu. Thank you. For me personally, I enjoy the videos where you are just standing still recording, not running and trying to talk at the sam time.

What a solid way to show breathing patterns and be able to talk about it, too. That's walking the walk and talking the talk. Or is that running the run…?

My fast in slow out is in for two, out for three. That way it alternates which footfall my exhale lands on. I worry that it might be having me breathe a bit fast, though.
@TheRunExperience

I think that your awareness of your breathing patterns is the real win here as well as you ability to manipulate it depending on where you are and what you're doing :)

When I cramp, I pick up a pebble and hold it in my hand or in between two fingers. Focusing on not dropping the pebble, helps me to forget about the pain of the cramp.

Andrew Benton interesting, I’ll have to try that. If I get a stitch, it’s always on my right side and usually after 10-12 km. I’m not really sure why it happens like that.
