@Fishtory I just wanted to chime in on the use of Methylene Blue. I attended a talk at Milwaukee Aquarium Society given by Rob McClure. He has stopped using this method and instead uses Alder cones. It’s been confirmed by a renowned PHD Microbiologist that Methylene Blue gets in the Cory eggs causes damage to soft tissue. Eyes, gills, and around the spine. I would be happy to get you connected with Rob he’s a great resource and so grateful to have him in our club.
You gotta love Corys and watching them breed (and helping the process along, with eggs in floating containers etc) has been some of the most rewarding experiences I've had in fishkeeping.
Glad you enjoyed it! Theres over 600 videos in my collection now, and hopefully some of the other catfish spawning videos and pleco breeding info may also help inform the subject matter a bit more. Thanks for stopping by to have a view, and welcome to the channel!
Props to you sir! Thank you for all the research you've done and education you're passing on to folks like myself. It's great to see and feel the passion you have for the hobby. In my opinion, it makes a difference! I'm located in the out skirts of Seattle and would love the opportunity to pick your brain and here the experiences you've had to better my odds on breeding these amazing fish..
Oh right on, man! I'm in Shoreline. Hit me up on Facebook or email at alexanderjwilliamson@gmail.com sometime and after this crazy week I have, I should have some free time
Good morning Alexander... What a great topic to wake up too.. because what's better than Corydoras... Baby corydoras ❤️ thank you for sharing and hope you have an amazing Day!
I have two cory doras and when i change tank water and razor blade my glass withing two days these two put eggs all over the glass…..they have started doing this in the last six months….ive had them for two and a half years in a 25 gallon bow front tank…no special feed…and had no clue they would lay eggs…..yesterday was the fourth time in two months they have all these eggs on the glass( always at nite)…ive never put the eggs anywhere as i only have one tank but am getting a 75 gallon so perhaps ill keep up,the 25 gallon for this purpose..? I am very impressed with your channel and the information you put out! 😁
@@AdriCr4ft Any pointers on which plants you use? Crypts, Java, Vals, Sags, and anubis seem to be what survive best. The first 4 of that list all have the same leaf shape and growth pattern. Stem plants just dissolve in my water. Even house plants are affected by how hard our water is (and we have a water softener lol). If you've got some other suggestions to try I'd love some variety! 😊
@@rustybraids just give me a few minutes I’m going to give you the list I have in my tank with no co2 injection. I’m just not very good with names and spellings as English is not my forte. It’s ok. I want to give you the right names but many you mentioned work very well. What I have found is also the size of the plants you put in can matter but I might be wrong. I think it’s just the fact it has no co2 injection so they grow incredibly slowly, and with every plant there is usually a initial die back as the plant gets used to its environment! They will eventually put out new growth unless they are super small. Usually they need at least one leaf to photosynthesis? I’m sure Alex can correct me if I say something wrong aha. :) So let me just do that for you. Post soon
Another great video:). I've had 1 baby cory appear in my tank w/out me trying. I thought it was strange timing b/c the tank recently finished tx for ick, but after watching this it makes sense w/ the water changes n temp changes and what not. 😀
one of my kuhlis is heavily eggbound and i THOUGHT i was doing a coldwater flush by doing a water change with 2 degree cooler water. Will be trying with 5 degrees cooler tomorrow! thanks for your help!!
Good luck! If that fails try feeding crushed garlic mixed with the little pitt at the center of green peas.. it can help push everything through their stomach and sometimes un-kink the ova-ducts if they had digestive system pressure on them
Glad you enjoyed it! I hoped it would kind of give people a fish's point of view - so to speak. Im happy you seemed to get it...some people just think im talking for the hell of it hehe.
@@Fishtory Your pragmatic approach -mixing science with hobby- is right up my tank alley! Much obliged if you checked out my relatively new channel: Lush&SaltyAquariums Super similar vibes :)
Just make sure you're not adding warmer water than tank temp (Always a few degrees cooler) and then soft water, never harder... so if your tap water has a high ph or high tds, toss a jug or two of distilled water in with the big water change/wet season simulation
Alright bro. I only know what's in my tank because I've heard you briefly describe Cory eggs in another video. But I've got some eggs! So here I am brother enlighten me
Thanks. Happy to hear also...these guys could use a hand up in the hobby (bring the price down). They're so easy to spawn, it's kind of silly they still sell for up to 25 a fish
I don’t suppose you know where I could get more Aspidoras Pauciradiatus? I originally got them at Ocean Aquarium in San Francisco, but haven’t been back in some time - especially since distancing and shelter in place started. If you know a source for them and can share... my 2 six rays and I would be most grateful
The only place that i know of, that may carry them during this craziness with COVID19, is The wetspot tropical fish in Portland Oregon (online they have a species listing weekly). Good luck, those are beautiful fish!
Welcome 🙏. I hope you find some more info you find helpful. There's a lot of content around this channel, and a great community of helpful hobbyists if you have questions or ideas to share. Cheers and happy new years@
Welcome to the community! Please feel free to check out the 500+ video archive, post your own photos or request help/ advicr on our Facebook group and of course please don't hesitate to ask questions, if you have them. Take care and welcome -Alexander
Thank you! Gotta try these tips. A year ago my pygmaeas bred like crazy in my comunity tank so I lost lots of them due to other fishes' jaws 🦖 Like for having talked about Venezuelan corys ✌🏽 Missing my country mode: activated🥺
So my panda corydoras have yet to breed. I've had them for a few months. They definitely seam happy. They are always playing and darting around the tank. All well fed, but have yet to breed. I'm going to try getting them to breed thank you for the advice. I will definitely be getting that done.
Found this extremely helpful. One question, how long can i keep them in the magic jar. I plan on putting them into a fry hatchery which has lil slits in, they would easily fit through at the moment only being 2 days hatched so cant do that yet. Could they survive for a week or 2, or am i best off setting up a grow out tank asap. I have a 7.5 gallon i could set up? Desperate to keep them alive! Help lol.
A tank is best...but if theyre in water thats been cycled for several months and has algae and microorganisms...theyll be best off stay In a pen in that tank for a couple weeks....just add an airstone to prevent fungi..cheers
After the process that you explained, mine did start to go wild non stop as in they swam in a big group all very tight together, the females were cleaning off some leafs, and were head butting each other. However i never saw the T position. And even after some days i never find eggs. Why do you think that is? Loved the video.
Oh good to hear! Well first id make sure you see some really fat bellied females along with males heh. But my guess is they spawned on the glass, a rock or leaf and just ate them immediately. Id check the tank as much as possible and look under any broad leaves or rock overhangs/wood. You can always feed them normal for a week or two...then feed them live blood worms /black worms, meal worms/ grubs etc (frozen if all else fails) spirulina waffers 2x a week and protein the other 5 meals for a week or two...while letting the water temp creep up 4 or 5 degrees....and even scooping 2 to 5 % of the water out every 2 days for about a week ...then hit them with the cold fresh water trick :) Goodluck, my friend- let me know how it turns out please.-Alex
@@Fishtory I surely will. Thank you so much, you have no idea how good it feels to have someone who has the experience and knowledge teach you. Again thank you infinitely.
I haven't... i should though... its so tedious.... i use a turkey baster and large gage airline tube as a tiny gravel vac...and while im puttzing around in there, it gives me tons of extra time to examine all the shrimp and fish i want to split up, cull or keep
Once I finally get them to breed inputting the eggs in my 5g shrimp tank. Plenty of little bugs to eat. And no predators. The 10g they live in has a betta. So I wont keep them in there.
do i need male cory tobe able female cory to spawn ? i have 4 albino and they spawn egg sometimes but zero hatch some people told me that those egg didnt fertilized because i dont have male cory
My eggs already hatched and I didn't get the chance to separate the eggs from the tank I turned off the tank filter and I can see the fey moving at the top surface of the water. Should I remove the adult snails and cory cats I have currently in the tank(no fish in tank) I'm scared to use a net to get the adults and what if the fry get stuck when I put the net in.
Very timely, I have some pygmy corys coming next week. Probably not the best to start with. I’m limited to 10 gallon tanks and it was pygmy or hasbrosus from what I read and I liked the pygmy best. So wish me luck! Please tell me about your shelving. I just bought some heavy duty, rated to 600# with wheels, 800 or 850# with adjustable feet. I put mine on wheels. Shelves are 24” wide so I can put 10 gallon tanks front to back on them. My 2 concerns are how many tanks I can really put on this shelf, and, if the wire is going to properly support the base of my (framed) tanks. Thought about twisting them a bit to get better support. Please share your experience. Thank you. LOVED the video. I’m sure I’ll be referring back frequently.
I bought mine at Home Depot.. each shelf is rated for 300#s and fail tested up to 600#s. I'm not a fan of rolling shelves just because of minor earthquakes because i live in Seattle and that is actually fairly common (Japan, Indonesia, southern and central California or Alaska are in similar situations also.) I should bolt them into my wall, however i let it sway a bit. But if there is an earthquake over around a 6.4 or 6.6...all my tanks are gonna shatter anyhow. Just be careful not to front load a rolling cart, because any balance issues are extremely amplified due to sloshing of water. I hope that helps a bit? It was around $65 i believe maybe 59.99 on sale even. And just their in house brand of storage shelving. Also, its wire shelving, so you probably want some chip board or laminate to cut to the size of the bottom of your tanks that are over 15 gallons.
The Secret History Living in Your Aquarium thank you. Michigan here so earthquakes not a problem ( usually). I feel much better getting it assembled and a couple 10 gallon aquariums set up. I think I will put board under just to be sure the tank frame is supported.
My pandas are spawning like every other day without me doing anything. The habrosus are kept in best conditions and I tried a lot nur never even got close. I'll put em with the pandas and try your method. Hope that works but so far I never had success with them. Do you have any other tips specifically for habrosus?
Perfect timing. I picked up some habrosus today from the coop to start a breeding project. And also, have you ever successfully bred caridina in our state's tap water?
I have bred crystal caridina... and tons of malawa caridina / tiger caridina ... but bo luck with blue bolts or king kongs, red wine, pinto etc (without RO/DI water)
@@Fishtory yeah i cant seem to get the params right for taiwan bees. My oebts are holding strong tho! I cant hook up an r/o unit where i rent, i was told no. Maybe ill try cbs or crs then if my blue bolts dont make it. I set up another 10 too. Up to 9 tanks and a pond now. 😅 hope you and your family are staying safe in the city.
@Fishtory I got scared and turned the filter on. I have some frog tadpoles in there too but they seem to get along. No fighting or anything like that. Adorable little fish the black corys!
I think C. panda , trilineatus, sterbai and venezuelanus are all just as easy- then you get to other groups that are hit or miss...you kind of need to pull all those tips and tricks mentioned to get them to spawn....and then some of the very rare or uncommon to the hobby- species, are seemingly a mystery on why they do or dont actually spawn
@@Fishtory Thank you so much, I've had success with the two previous mentioned species, but could only safe a few, there were tiger barbs bf I could do something. Cheers :)
I had wondered if Corys need a lot of open space on the tank floor, since there are lots of videos of corys schooling at bottom level in these open spaces. But I see your Corys seem quite happy hunting around in the tightly planted tank. I ask this because I'm planning a tank of only Dwarf Sagittaria, which in the long run can potentially get very crowded at ground level, due to runners going out to colonise available space. What do you think?
I think as long as they have some room to swim in mid water and get excersize they seem to do very well. Plus I add live black worms and then they hunt them for a few weeks and it keeps them occupies and seemingly "happy" hehe
Go to get gills.com or aquabid and you'll find them. I know 3 people in KY off the top of my head who have floating plants like red root floaters, frog bit and salvinia. I actually have changed my tank around since this video
I received 6 gold stripe corys 72 hours ago. They were about 3/4 - 1 inch. Anyone know how old that would be? I was shocked at how small they were. But they tripled in weight and grew to a little over and inch over night. Is this normal? I don't want to support the use of growth hormones.
Probably 4 to 6 months old...and no that's not normal... they may have been severely restricted in movement and space...sometimes it stunts fish, but my guess is they had high tds also and they have gained a little water weight and expanded in your tank on top of eating too. Thats my best guess? But it's odd
@@Fishtory Glad you're safe. Yeah, the growth freaked me out. I won't be ordering from that place anymore. They may be acting odd too. They stay in 3 groups of three & two & one little guy usually stays hidden. I think I'll medicate them in a few days if things are still odd. Thanks for sharing your big brain with me and stay safe.
You are correct, appologies on the terminology. I mean a low pressure system has moved in but the moisture has not. So just prior to a sizable storm or rain event
There might be 850 but there are not 850 known species. They are not a known species until they are named so you can’t include the C and CW numbered fish.
Correct. I said species and morphs... but by morphs i mean things like Highfin, sailfin, cws and lasers vs aneaus. I believe there are 171 "species" with taxonomic descriptions.
Whoa! Are they amanos? Ive never heard of neocaridina or caridina going to eat eggs...other than the milky white clear ones that have fungus. Many friends who breed corys and plecos use shrimp to keep their eggs clean in fact.
Hahah yup nothing to see here... normal northwest liberal stuff... well and some crazy white supremacists with guns that the news says are protesters with BLM (They arent)
So much talk, so little info. You are over explaining everything, this video could have been 10min with all the info you give in this plus some bonus 👍
Yes, some people need to hear it like 5 ways also though. If they just want the info, its a paragraph on practical fishkeeping. People can google it in 30 seconds realistically
@@Fishtory Could not disagree more with the above critical comment. Fascinating and inspiring presentation. New viewer and now subscribed. (But those nails!).
