This video shows you how to use modem only / bridge mode on the Three ZTE MC801A 5G Router as supplied in early 2022.
This function allows you to use your own router with the WAN IP / public IP directly on that router. If you really wanted you could have it go direct to a computer or game console without the router in the middle giving that computer or console direct access on the internet with no NAT.

. Just picked one up from cash converters! Brand new, £80! Cash converters broke the seal! Oddly, i had to manually set the 3 APN to iPv4 and APN 3INTERNET, even though that was the APN before. The ipv6 was throwing it out. You made it look so simple! Great router. Will be buying the outside antenna at some point too!

Thanks for this video. I'm currently suffering an outage on my TalkTalk broad-band. A contractor digging up the street sliced through the Openreach cable cutting off me and a couple dozen other properties. I got the Three ZTE 4g router as a stop gap while we are waiting for repairs to be completed. The 4g bandwidth is very variable but better than nothing. I also have bought a Poynting external antenna which will be going up soon and hopefully improve the signal. This setup worked okay double nating but I have changed to bridged on the 4g now which is also working fine. I'm using eero mesh as the router. eero took a few minuets to settle after the config change. The main reason for doing this is when we eventually get TalkTalk back up (come on Openreach pull your finger out) I'm going to try a TP Link ER605 and set up load balancing or failover. The TP Link box is expected to arrive early next week, but no rush until TT is back up. I'm puzzling through how to set this up and are thinking of using the TP Link as the router and putting the eero mesh into bridge mode too. Has anyone tried this sort of setup? How did it go and are their any pitfalls to be avoided? On second thoughts could I use the TP Link just for load balancing / fail over and the eero to provide dhcp etc? I'll have to experiment...
@trevorspittle5478
@trevorspittle5478 7 месяцев назад
TP Link Er605 has arrived and looks like it will do the job. Still no vdsl coming in so i can't try the load balancing yet. How hard can it be for Openreach to blow a new fibre down the duct, splice some tails to it and plug into the street boxes? I'm starting to think it was a very good decision to go down the 4g route.

I have the same 5G hub and had a few issues getting the internet passed through to my Ubiquiti Edgerouter. What fixed it for me was making sure the router and modem were on different subnets / for example setting the 5G hub to (i think the default) 192.168.0.1 and my Ubiquiti router to 192.168.1.1. Started working after that

Oh yes, thats a very good point. Colliding IPs is likely to cause all sorts of problems. If your router defaults to the same IP as the ZTE router you definitely want to change the IP of one of them.

I didn't try but I suspect the first device that connects will get the bridge, even if over WiFi. If you test.. let me know :) Just make sure that nothing else can accidentally connect. Maybe change the WiFi password so you know just your important device is the only one that can connect. (If you get a 192.168 IP, try a reboot of the router and try again).

Hi thanks for the video, I have the same router with a public apn and I just cannot get it to give my laptop or router public ip! I cannot figure out what is wrong or with what sequence it must be done to not give me a private ip. (Bridge mode gives private ip with no internet access but ui access), Wireless broadband mode gives of course private ip range and internet access, also is accessible behind my main router. This is very weird issue, my provider does not know either. Its annoying as I cannot manage my network and I get double nat which causes issues. Any ideas?
@freename

Which mobile provider are you on and do they even give devices a public IP? Most mobile providers use CGNAT (Carrier Grade NAT) where you get given a non-public IP (sometimes between 100.64.0.0 and 100.127.255.255).

I’ve just signed up to this for 24 months with 3. I have been using a BT whole home wifi mesh system with my previous ISP’s (Gigaclear/Virgin/Sky) - I just used to disable their SSID and use the BT one as I found it better than their signal strengths and coverage. As the 3 router has wifi6 and my BT discs don’t, I wanted to take advantage of that where I can and if not then would still like to have the BT mesh available. Then I can join the one with optimal strength depending on where I am in my house. Could I just leave the 3 router on wireless mode and plug the BT master disc into one of the Ethernet ports on the back of the 3 router? Would there be any disadvantage in doing it like that?
@freename

What you describe sounds fine. The only annoying thing might be having to manually swap between the two wifi names if your computer or device "sticks" to the wrong one even though it has worse reception than the closer or better one.

Do you think the results will be better? Like less disconnecting and stuff. Also please explain why my ZTE drops to 1 signal and goes into 4G mode because I really don't get this WiFi stuff. @freename

I'd ask why.. because the hub 5 probably has worse WiFi specs than the ZTE! Anyway. Disable IPv6 on the BT hub. Move the BT hub IPv4 to something that isn't the same as anything else on your network. Turn off DHCP on the home hub. Now plug the Lan of the hub into the Lan of the ZTE and the BT hubs WiFi should give you the internet from the ZTE.

@freename
@freename 2 года назад
Three Data SIMS (and maybe normal SIMS too?) can be configured to use an "APN" (Access Point Name) which provides you with a public IP address. EE and other UK networks and one of the other APNs on Three give you a CGNAT (Carrier Grade NAT) IP address where port forwards and inbound traffic won't work, likely leading to NAT type issues on games. However - it isn't a guarantee. Consoles and NAT are difficult at the best of times. Even having a public IP might not solve your specific issue.

If you are in the UK then only Three gives you a public IP address when bridged, and only if you set the right APN. Every other provider gives you a CGNAT ip. I'm not sure about providers in other countries but it's very unusual to get a public IP on mobile networks.

The router will be transmitting both 5ghz and 2.4ghz with the same name. Sounds almost like something has managed to connect to the ZTE first before the tp-link and has "stolen" the bridged IP. Ensure nothing else can connect via a cable or wifi to the ZTE when you boot up the ZTE and then the tp-link? A good test if your laptop has a network socket, plug the laptop directly into the Three bridged router. Your laptop should show a non 192.168 IP if you do ipconfig.. see if the internet works still. If the internet works then you know the issue is the tp link. (If you get a 192.168. IP then reboot the ZTE and try again. I think only the first device connected to it gets the public / bridged IP. Anything else gets a local IP and can only access the ZTE web admin interface but not the internet.)

@@freename Thanks for the reply. When connected directly my laptop does indeed get a public IP and can browse the web. Turning everything off and rebooting ZTE, then TPlink the TP gets a similar public IP. I can ping any address from within the TPlink's diagnostics page or attach a laptop (which gets given a 192... address) and ping from there to any address, they respond just fine. Just no browsing!! So frustrating but I know it'll be something simple, feels like the TP isn't passing DNS requests other than ping. Even its own firmware update checker can't see their update server, yet can ping it!!

Ah. If you are having problems with the IP changing then look into Dynamic DNS such as no-ip.org where you can have a name like 5thestreet.no-ip.org which will always change to point to your new IP. The router, if it supports it, gets configured with the dynamic DNS provider information and reaches out to update the host name each time the IP changes.

Hi, very nice video. I have ran into a problem with my network at home. I was using the ZTE router as my main but upgraded to a fibre network and got a new router from my provider. I wanted to use the ZTE as an Access Point to cover my whole home with wifi but can't figure out how. So I connected the ZTE with my new router with a LAN cable and tried all modes (bridge mode, automatic and the other 2) but no luck. The SSID is the same and I turned off the DHCP on the ZTE. I know this video is old so probably will have to buy an Access point insted of using the ZTE. If someone can help me I would be really thankful. Already serched the whole internet but nothing. Greetings from Switzerland

Should be: with the ZTE in factory defaults mode.. set it's LAN IP to something not already use on the network. Change the WiFi name and password to be what you want. Turn off IPv6 on the ZTE for the LAN (if it has it?). Turn off DHCP on the LAN. Then plug the LAN (not shared Lan/wan) port on the ZTE into the LAN port on you main router. It should now just act as an access point.

It is worth to say that you are at risk while you plug your computer in the ZTE in bridge mode, because there is no more NAT to hide you from the bad guys, especially if you have switched off windows firewall. So you can check that your ip is the public one (or the private given by the LTE ISP if they use CH-NAT) but do not stay connected this way for a long time. Plug quickly the ZTE into a true router-firewall.

Windows firewall is enabled by default for all computers with software only opening ports to the internet if you approve the request. It's not an issue running a normal desktop computer like this these days. But if you enable remote desktop port and have a weak password that's asking for trouble. I run many windows servers and desktop machines directly on the internet and have never had problems other than if someone's been an idiot and set a weak password.

I'm rather envious of how smoothly bridge mode worked for you! I bought an Asus RT-AX86S and followed your video but the ZTE wasn't passing on the WAN IP to the router and the wifi was still running even in bridge mode. I disabled the wifi and DHCP but still no good so I had to manually set a static WAN IP on the Asus router but I'm guessing the problem there is that when that changes the internet will go down. I wonder why the automatic setting isn't working and also why the ZTE isn't working as it seems to in your example?
@freename
@freename 2 года назад
The only thing I can think is that something else gets there first and is given the public IP. If you've previously had the router in routing mode with lots of things on the wifi then anything might auto connect and nothing else will then work. If you turn WiFi off you'd then need to reboot the ZTE router and make sure that the only thing ever connected and doing DHCP on the network sockets was your Asus router. Interesting question about the static IP setting, mobile networks work in very strange ways so I do wonder what will happen. Three is pretty quick to change IP so a reboot of the ZTE should simulate a forced IP change if you wanted to test it.
