Great video! The only thing I don't like is that the clicking the check update button immediately applies the update if a new update exists hence the "last update" text.

Just got the ZTE MC888 (Unbranded). Hope it has the same web interface. The signal strength mapping is brilliant. I will plug it into an extension lead and try it at various locations around the flat. Been amazing so far. Able to stream 4k 120fps video to two devices at the same time, with little impact on web browsing etc. All from a £20 a month Smarty SIM

The automated reboot is sometimes useful, I've had my performance drop by 80% when it's been on for a few weeks and a reboot brings it back to normal. The one issue i had was in bridge mode it doesn't always sync the IP with my Asus router which thinks it's disconnected. Rebooting the Asus can sometimes fix it as can removing and replacing the cable.
@freename

If performance drops over time and a reboot fixed it I would say that's an issue which needs solving properly, scheduled reboots are such a lazy way for manufacturers to fix poor firmware code.

Would you have any suggestions? Thanks

Check if there are any driver updates for your laptops WiFi card. (From the manufacturer direct, not using a supposed driver updater program or website!). Otherwise if you don't see any mention of wifi6 on the admin pages then I suspect you can't change the settings on the router side. Do you know what make and model wifi card is in your laptop? Also maybe try changing the encryption setting for the WiFi in case your laptop didn't like AES.

Hi there…thanks for posting such a useful and clear video. I am trying to use my mc801a with a Netgear RBR760 mesh network and am really struggling. I’ve tried enabling bridge mode, with or without WiFi enabled and, whilst both the 5G router and Netgear mesh network seem to be functioning perfectly, they do not appear to be talking to each other, so the mesh network is not connected to the internet. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, The easier option might be to put the Orbi in bridge mode and use the ZTE as the routing component. Though if there are things you want on the Orbi like parental controls, using the Orbi in bridge would likely stop those features from working. My only comment or thought is, when I was testing bridge mode (I have a video on that too), the first device to connect got the Three IP address. This means if you change to bridge mode and something else connects before your Orbi does.. the Orbi then won't be able to connect. I would ... Turn WiFi off on the ZTE. Plug a computer directly into the ZTE, set bridge mode.. See if that computer (being the only connected thing) can get online and has the Three public IP. If it does.. turn off the ZTE. Unplug the computer from the network port.. plug the Orbi WAN port into the ZTE. Turn the ZTE back on.. As long as the Orbi is set to obtain an IP automatically on it's WAN port - it should work the same way the computer did and go online. Good luck! I find the Orbi really slow and unreliable to configure and the status light on them does not always reflect the actual status (it seems that it can be online but the light will be in error for a few minutes more!).
@philipcroxford9702
@philipcroxford9702 7 месяцев назад
Thanks for this…will certainly give it a try. FYI, I currently have the Orbi set to AP mode and the ZTE doing the router functions. Didn’t work initially, but changed the network cable from ZTE to Orbi and it has now been stable for a couple of weeks…really not convinced that it was the (brand new, Netgear supplied) network cable, but nothing else changed! This networking malarkey is a real black art for us non-experts. Thanks again!

@freename

Most mobile networks use CGNAT (Carrier Grade NAT) preventing any port forwarding as you will never be given a public IP. The only network I know of (other than some obscure business SIM providers) where you can get a public IP is Three in the UK. One of their APN settings gives you a genuine public IP.

By default the ZTE router I had broadcast both 2.4GHz and 5GHz at the same time under the same name. A 2.4GHz only device trying to connect should "just work" as long as you have typed in or selected the correct name, made 100% sure you typed in the right password.. and are within reception range of the router. You could try "5:52 - WiFi Settings, SSID Name and password." where you can tell it to not have a "Single SSID" and call your 5GHz network something different to your 2.4GHz network but this usually causes more confusions than it solves. It might be worth changing the WiFi password to something simpler too.

If you don't see it as a bookmark section in the list in the description then it doesn't, or the isp hid the option on the router I had.

I do not know if the provider I bought the router from hides any pages. Sorry.

@@iitzuray I have a feeling something similar happened to me but I can't recall how I solved it. Possibly another browser, possibly looking at the POST data and sending my own request.. But I may be remembering wrong and attributing the same issue from a different device.

I've had this for a month was happily using on the supplied Three B04 firmware with 5G connection and average 150Mbps (not the best 5G speeds I know but good enough for me). I set the 'auto check for updates' to disabled. Woke up this morning to hear household moaning about internet connections to various devices. Went into web interface to check out signal etc, and I am greeted with a pop-up saying 'Update successful'. I checked the detailed info, and see I've update to B07 firmware at 2AM, despite my auto check update setting. Now the router doesnt even lock on to any 5G signal (all values in the 'Advanced > network information for 5G have a hypen/blank value) and the speeds are terrible. I've even resorted to factory resetting but same issue. Going to contact Three tomorrow but I dont have high hopes of them knowing what they will be talking about. Its almost like my 5G antennas have been disabled or my SIM no longer being allowed to connect to 5G masts. Really angry right now.

How strange, I'll check if my one has been updated and reply here in the next couple of days.

I set my updates to disabled but same thing happened to me last night, I'm now on the B07 firmware, fortunately I can still get 5G and the speeds seem unchanged. This is only my 4th day with this router. Have you fixed your issues?

@@kabukidreamboy No unfortunately my issue not resolved. Was on the phone with Three for about an hour being passed through 5 people. The last person was supposed to be technical support but he said all looks fine "from his end". He promised to escalate it to "router" team who will apparently analyse my traffic from last few weeks to see if they can spot an issue. I emphasised my problems only started exact time that the router got updated. I am going to try and get another 5G device/phone in the mean time and put sim in there to see if I can get by through other means and it's not because the 5G signal has gone from my area. The last month it was working so great I felt confident to cease my ADSL line so have no back up :( Glad to hear you have not had same issue though

@@auberginesplash Since recording the video it does look like my router has updated to the B07 firmware. I have factory reset it since and it would have had the auto-check for updates option turned on.. so kind of expected. I"m not currently in an area with 5G coverage so can't check that yet; I'll try and do that test next time I am in an area where I know I previously got 5G.

@@freename Appreciate you going to trouble to check. If you do get a chance to confirm if your 5G still works where it used to on B04, that would be great. Thanks

Should work on anything. I think the website looks a lot different on a mobile phone though.
