Backups are important! Don't wait until its too late, because when you do lose a drive....it really sucks

Easystore drives - www.bestbuy.com/site/wd-easys...
Shucking a western digital easystore drive can yield some really great, white label Western Digital drives with the same speeds as WD Red drives. I highly recommend doing some googling about shucking these drives before making the purchase. There’s some really great videos and articles that detail the process better than I have here.

Definitely the video I'm looking for. I got the same QNAP enclosure that arrived 5 minutes ago. One thing I recommend is that you should have a separate drive to back up the whole thing because RAID is not back up at all, I heard a lot of scary stories about a failing enclosure that brings your whole data to dust. If somebody breaks in and leave with your QNAP, the same principle will happen. Anyway I love your video and color grading style a lot, It'll be great if you can show us the way you do. Thank you in advance.

RU-vid is automatically hiding your other comment, not sure how to fix it. But to answer your question, I chose the QNAP because of two main things. 1. I didn’t have a super big need for the features of a NAS. Local storage is good for me for the time being. 2. (Most importantly) the QNAP enclosure shown here uses a hardware raid rather than software raid. Meaning it takes the maintenance of building the disks off the computer and into some tech inside the drive bays. I am able to only use the software then to check up on the health of my drives. Being on a Mac this saved me a few headaches after deciding I wanted to go RAID 5.

Do the hard drives have to be WD easystore? I have a set of WD - My Book 8TB External USB 3.0 Hard Drives they don't say easystore these were priced at a little more then the easystore ones.

Just got this sucker! Boxing Day deals on the 10TB WD Red drives, so got those for just $1K...debating between Raid 5 and 10 right now.

Great video - The only problem I see is that you would loose your warranty on the drives - But you will save a lot of money

What's your opinion about buying QNAP TR-004 OR Mediasonic HFR7-SU31CH , the second one is 10gb speed .. what do you advise me ?

right there with ya m8, i keep *all of my footage as well. some of my buddies move on from it, but i just can't do it lolol. seeing this is an older video, curious how the QNAP has treated you long-term? wonder if there's been any deal-breaker moments with it, or catastrophic failures. The array itself seems like a good value. My primary editing array is an 8-bay Thunderbolt RAID; it's been absolutely great, but not loving the backup process of it using single large drives and looking to streamline the backup of it. Like you, using backblaze as well, but in the event of a massive failure, don't love the idea of retrieving 100tb+ from them. thanks!

We actually moved our workflow over to dropbox when their enterprise still included unlimited. It wasn't too hard to link Dropbox to an external drive as its "home" folder. Since then, dropbox has done away with unlimited and that has become cost prohibitive. We have a Thunderbay 8 as well now. I still use the QNAP for personal stuff and the drives from this video are still running and appear healthy. Though I am not regularly pulling from it as I once was. It does stay somewhat active. I wish I had a better solution. We have since done away w Backblaze and moved to the raid / dropbox workflow. And then for projects over 3 years that we want to keep (stuff beyond the typical dayrate dump footage stuff) we moved to LTO as a long term solution. The LTO reader is expensive, and you have to buy the software, but then the tapes are only like 100 bucks a pop after that for around 18TB. its slow, but its secure and we feel good about that for now. Usually if its over 3 years and not super important its depreciated in value anyway and rare a client wants to pull from it in our cases. hope that helps.

Can you comment on how loud the fan of the TR-004 is? I hear it can be quite loud and the speed is not variable.
@RyanTimms

This has lived behind my machine since I made this video and I have never been annoyed by it. I wouldn’t consider it loud or bothersome.

What was the speed you could get from the TR-004? Really difficult to judge from reviews. Somebody testet SSDs in RAID0 and got 'only' 400+ MB/s. I am trying to get a RAID enclosure that doesn't top at slightly over 200MB/s while reading from the drive. Theoretically in RAID0 there should be at least 400MB/s possible with 4 drives. At least! And even in RAID5 more than 300MB/s reading from it. It's advertised as USB 3.2 Gen 1 Typ-C, but the english user manual says on page 8 that it is a USB 3.0. Typ-C port, while the technical data shows 3.2 Gen1 Typ-C. There's also the controller... so can you elaborate on the speed you are getting with your configuration?
@andrewmcgill4957
@andrewmcgill4957 2 года назад
With Spinning SATA drives it's pretty slow. Under 100 mb/s. If you use SSD's it will be fast. 500 mb/s.
@andieymi
@andieymi 2 года назад
@@andrewmcgill4957 No, the point is that they don't provide a control that can realize higher speeds with SSDs (or HDDs, which is absolutely possible by the way with spinning drives in Raid 0). QNAP German customer support clearly avoids this issue when asked.

@andieymi
@andieymi 2 года назад
@@andrewmcgill4957 Yes, and that's a controller problem. Both configurations should do way over 200MB/s - at times when even larger single HDDS reach nearly 200MB/s. And the QNAP can't. Which is a bummer. The USB 3.1 is purely hypothetical, as that's just half of what can be theoretically achieved with USB 3.0 UASP. So using these for speed just doesn't make sense I guess.

Isn't this a NAS enclosure? Backblaze doesn't allow NAS's to be backed up. How did you manage that?

I just did a little bit more research and saw that it can be used as both a DAS or NAS Expansion enclosure.

@RyanTimms
@RyanTimms 3 года назад
You can do this but if you do add more drives to the array you will have to wipe clean and start fresh with the old two.
@PatrickDSimpson
@PatrickDSimpson 7 месяцев назад
@@RyanTimms I thought you could later add two more drives and create a new RAID 1 pair without affecting the original two. Is this not the case?
@RyanTimms
@RyanTimms 7 месяцев назад
@@PatrickDSimpson I believe with this particular unit you need to wipe and start fresh. Since making this video I have moved to a Thunderbay. I had some issues with reliability after extended use for a few years. I suspect my TR004 was the issue. My hard drives inside still work as expected. I cleared everything off of this and have upgraded. It was much more expensive but hard to put a price on this data when clients are paying for it.
@PatrickDSimpson
@PatrickDSimpson 7 месяцев назад
@@RyanTimms Good to know. I'm hoping with just moderate use it'll last a while. Not sure I can justify spending Thunderbay kind of money at this point.

Those white label drives run hotter ,and they are slower, they are not reds anymore
@RyanTimms

That is possible now, but at the time of filming and the drives that I purchased ran similar speed tests. Its possible this has changed but I've had great experience with my system so far!

Fun fact: western digital gimps the speed of these drives inside externals. Don’t expect the same speed from shucked drives.
