I own the TR-004 DAS as an alternative to a more expensive NAS or gobs of individual hard drives. I think that a couple of things are important to note. 1) Four hard drives designed for a RAID are necessary, yes, but expensive. You’ve got to find the compromise between storage needs and wallet. Too little storage and you’ll be buying again soon. I found 8TB drives my compromise, but still dropped around $1000. 2) The DAS is noisy. The hard drives can be too. The DAS is connected to your computer so will likely be near your desk.

Great tips and suggestions here. All is true as well. I don't mind the noise and it's not constant but it will make noise here and there. Also, like you said picking what's best for you space wise is pretty huge. I can't remember how much I spent on my TR-004 but it was in the $2-$3000 range.

Also, the TR-002 is 6 Gbps (SATA-III) and the TR-004 is only 3 Gbps (SATA-II). So the 004 is slower, by half.

DAS stand for Direct Attached Storage.... it's NOT called a server.

Correct. It's basically an external hard drive with raid features.

What happens on enclosure hardware failure, can you access data on drives when connecting them to the PC? Asking because when enclosure fails you would lost all data again if the drives cannot be read without owning a second QNAP device as a replacement.

Does it matter if Erp is enabled or disabled in Bios for this device when Pc is off?

When shutting down Pc do you need to click safe eject every time or its ok to just shut down Pc after all tasks ended?

I have 60 year of photos right now stored on LaCie 2 big raid with 4 tb of usable disk space and over 3 tb used. I would like to increase my storage. Can I install a larger disk in one of the slots and have the original disk copy the smaller disk, and then install a second disk that is the same size as the larger disk, thereby increasing the total storage capacity?

What's Up John, been watching you for quite a few years buddy. I decided to do a DIY NAS build using TrueNAS. We'll see how that goes! Haha 😂I'm excited. Just bought all the parts online. Total Cost $365 w/ 4TB Ironwolf to start. Mid Tower case w/ 5+ 3.5" drive bays available + SSD for OS.

Does qnap support .cr3 files or Apple Pro Res?

It'll support any file type. If you're reading very large ProRes files you may have some trouble with playback, though.

Thank you John for the info. I back up my photos on individual external hard drives and I keep it moving. The methods you explained in this video; well, I'm going to have to look into. All of this stuff, I would say, just flew over my head. I've not a clue, but it's scary to think of losing all of my photos.

I did it myself. It's actually pretty straight forward. Plug in your HHDs, plug it into power, plug it into your computer, download the QNAP manager and then set up what type of raid you want to use and it'll work just like a normal external HHD.

@@byronholman9228 It's not. Since this is a direct attach server basically it hooks up just like an external harddrive would. Which makes it a little easier to use if you're not familiar with using a NAS.

@@byronholman9228 Setting up a NAS is extremely straightforward. I recommend Synology. I had a DS218+ and just upgraded to a DS423+ just last week.

It does not. This is strictly just for file storage.

You simply cannot find any information about the processor and the amount of RAM used in this equipment. What's the point of this?

Forgive my ignorance but I am not exactly tech savvy. I thought as a general rule you aren't supposed to work off of HHDs because they have moving components and are more likely to fail with consistent use and that's why people work off of external SSDs? Someone help me out haha
