intresting technique and it makes sense for the more oddly shaped boots. i did search for the 1.4mm waxed braided poly thread you mentiond, but couldnt find any source that sells full spools. is it not verry avalable in the us? also ive had trouble finding any kind of variety of jerk needles, especially larger diameters and longer lengths. I really like this technique and ive been using it for resoles but its impossible to find the large diameter and length i need to go through lug soles. any sources.for these items? thanks

shonuffisthemaster, the thread is Tiger thread from Abbey England. The needles are American Straight needles, #5 from Konomos Distributing in Kansas City, MO. Hope that helps.

These are built using the cowboy boot welt method, which basically means the welt runs back just behind the ball and into the shank area, which is then traditionally pegged or nailed.

So, is using a jerk needle and a lock stitch as good as or better than a traditional two needle saddle stitch? Do you see many of your boots back with broken stitches from the wear of the stitches cutting each other? It certainly looks easier than fighting with curved needles.

Roger, all I can speak from is my experience. Last year we likely we welted at least 100 pair and I repair shop, as well as the 40 or so pairs we built and welter. That's not to mention the thousands of pairs in the past years, all of which we have never seen or had welt stitches blowout or wear through. Based on our system and the science that we can come up with, the lockstitch is not only equivalent, but with the welt cord that we use, we feel it to be superior. It is also much faster to tear down when repairing. It is absolutely way faster then dealing with the two needle running stitch system of yesteryear. Hope this helps you…

It helps a lot. I'm not a professional boot maker, but am an amateur one, I guess. I've made shoes, but am embarking on my first pair of boots. I bought a jerk needle and am going to try this out on the new boots. Thanks for your response and your great videos.

Uncle Bob we use tiger thread from abbey thread company in England. It is braided polyester and heavily waxed...perfect for inseaming!

I have been looking into getting into the boot and shoe repair business I have found a gentleman that is willing to sell me a sticher line machine 2 nailers and all the hand tools and plenty of soles heels and supplies i would need to get started for $10,000 i was hoping if you thought that was a good price for the equipment and if the industry had a future as far as the repair part of the business goes. I would appreciate any advice you could offer your videos have been very helpful thank you
