Just dropping you a note to say thanks for all your videos, easily some of the best on the Internet, informative, useful and entertaining. I knocked up a garden bbq with a load of old bricks and am delighted with the result thanks to your advice. Nice one Rodian.
I have never laid a brick in my life but i am now hooked on your vids and chomping at the bit to build a brick barbeque. you make it sound so easy (which i'm sure it's not) but you have a great way of explaining and demonstrating your skill. keep up the good work - it is very much appreciated. sorry if i missed this in your vid but how many bricks are needed for this project please? many thanks again.
Lockdown decided to build a bbq had the bricks, nearly finished, pity this video wasn't here last week, but your other videos helped alot man, keep up the good work!!
Nice job, I remember building my mums only 30 year ago, I used paving slabs for the side work surface, trouble was my late father bought the wrong sand, it was not sharp sand and it was my first attempt at brick laying, so I didn't know about rubbing the joints afterwards, it did last for over 10 years thought. Lol.
That's just awesome mate. When I finish my outbuilding and land scaping I may copy this ( but double grill , so you get more food on) as I'm pretty sure I will have bricks left over. Really nice job mate thanks 👍 You have to do a pizza oven now to complete the outdoor cooking set would love to see that!!!! Excellent craftsmanship sir 10/10 💪👍👍
@@RodianBuilds I was also taught head joints then bed joints, but a union man said he does bed jnts, head jnts and then bed jnts again, broom it off. Stops the tags he says. I have a Gothic Arch build along with a Twisted Pier. I'll post a couple pics to your Insta-gram when finished. Cheers!
Yet again good vid. Not sure if you mention if theres a particular kind of cement, such as fire proof cement or just everyday cement. Also, how much sand and cement did you need? Example What kind of sand (grit, soft, builders if different to grit lol), and how many bags of what kg bags of cement? Thanks. You have inspired me to do so much during the lock down. Especially now sand and cement are now being delivered.. Love your vids... Brilliant. Adie, Doncaster, UK (DIY'er)
An irish guy walks into the builders yard and asks for several thousand bricks to make a bbq , merchant says why so many , irish guy says my flat is on the 5th floor . Heard that as a kid ,ill shut the door behind me : )
Thanks for the master classes - great tips and easy to follow. I bought some cheap bricks with bore holes to build my bbq. I was wondering if there is a 'best' way to finish the top so that the holes are hidden? Never laid bricks before but felt inspired to have a go.
Hi Rodian. Hope everything's going great for you . Great videos lad keep them up. I'm learning tons. I want to build an outdoor kitchen but I don't know how large to make the concrete base I'm thinking you lay all the bricks out the way you want to design the outdoor kitchen then pull them up and that's pretty much the rectangle that you want to the concrete base. Dig Down Stones frame steel rebar
For the method of supporting the tray, could you measure and cut the bricks to avoid the overlap? Would this affect the bricks ability to support the weight?
How many bricks are needed to build this thing? I’m putting slabs down in my garden next week and I’m defo building this puppy on the slabs after they’re done!
Top and fun tip... I built the classic C shaped bbq.. for the grill I got a local engineering company to cut me some 5mm steel plate to fit and used some old road pins welded into a really sturdy and robust griddle to fit. I also drilled holes through 4 levels of mortar from side to side so I could adjust the griddle height from the plate and used 2 more road pins to support the griddle.. works a treat...
Apologies if this has been asked before, are you please able to give a rough estimate/ guide to what materials we will need as well and links where we can get them from if necessary. I have over 100 odd bricks from digging up a path in my garden and seems a shame to waste them but not sure they are full size like this so I may have to do a bit more research into how I can make them work (que watch all your videos). Do I need to prepare on a concrete base or could I build directly onto my existing patio (assuming it is level?) Thanks in advance if you are able to get back to me.
Me personally I always joint the perps first, as when doing the beds after it cleans off the perp edges, but that's just me, really enjoyed this video and will be building this, great job bricky
@@RodianBuilds I do see where you are coming from, I'm only a level 3 bricklayer at the moment and have been taught by few different people, everyone does it differently which i find to be a good thing, ofcourse some methods are easier than others but, aslong it comes out looking the same, then happy days, I do enjoy your videos, very well made and easy to follow, keep up the amazing work and dedication to industry, I personally love bricklaying, and it's clear you do aswell, your wife will make a fine bricklayer, keep up the hard work mate, stay safe.
Awesome video! I absolutely loved it! Question, how would you go around if you want to bake pizza’s here? Is there a special stone grill plate needed, or how do you do that? Greetings from Holland 🇳🇱🥰👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hi Mate, dumb question but where can i find or buy reclaimed bricks? They give off a cool weathered look!.. and instead of buying a bbq kit i was thinking of using a paving slab to sit the coals on. Do you think this would do the job or a bad idea? Thanks!
Could I use 5mm steel to lay tray on and griddle, same method just thicker plates. Those ties look like wouldn't last 2 minutes with the weight? Many thanks.
Quite a lot of people have asked the same but I don't think you have answered... I'm new to bricklaying but preparing to build a bbq (want it ready for my birthday in a month time, I should manage it!)... question is, how much mortar is needed? I guess I would need to mix it once for the whole project as I don't want to stop halfway to mix more? .. I will use the mix by hand on a piece of ply method. Will a bag of cement be enough? Too much? I'm thinking on a 1:5 ratio that would mean 5 bags of sand, and it feels like an awful lot of muck to me but maybe not... what do I know?! I've ordered the plasticiser, but will need to order the sand and cement, so if you could answer I would be VERY grateful. Thank you very much for your videos, watched & learned loads, (and your wedding in NY! Congratulations!)
Thanks but that wasn’t my question... the question was what is the total amount that will be needed for the whole bbq, would 3 bags of sand and one of cement be needed? Or 1.5 sand and half of cement? In the event, I just bodged it and put the bbq together without mortar, and used it several times last summer, with no problem at all!
@@jamietalbot7254 haha not you're name but that is a good name.i meant you're comment where it says joint perps before bed ? Know nothing about brick laying and I am wanting to learn a little
Hi i just wonderd, this sounds daft but what is the dimensions of this bbq. As i am going to build one but i dont want to cemement it straight to my porceline tiles so i was going to place a nice couple slabs down and build onto that. But wonderd what dimensions are so i know what slabs i am going for
Tyler .A Mate, I just finished making the brick bbq for the first time ever.. I used 4 sands to 1 cement (4 bags were just enough) my build was bigger than the bbq in this video too
Hi, To keep to your foundations, how wide is your grill bbq tray, the one on amazon looks quite wide and I'm keen to keep to your foundation of bricks. Cheers
Mate another quality build, has given me a thought 🧐 but have a question for you and as I’m not a bricky but would love to learn, I want to build a oblong fire pit into my raised decking do I use blocks for below deck height then at deck level use my bricks and also should I double skin it giving the pit a cavity to hopefully allow heat out and stop the bricks cracking or would it be fine ? Thanks in advance mate 👍🏼👍🏼
I would use blocks below the decking and do a cavity like you say. Make sure you use a strong mix and allow it to fully dry before lighting your first fire
Hello from Germany, do you ever heard about Cross Bond ? I think the Half Bond is nothing special and dosn't look good. But i saw some really cool thinks on your Channel. Greetings from Reich😆
Is this just the thing to do while we waiting for the whole World to either get well or die? Well... I might as well record my build as well. Nice vid.
What about cutting the bricks for the shelves so they dont stick out I think it would look good anyway maybe cut side in toward shelf good video thanks
Using the brick ties as holders for the grill tray and cooking level, will they not corrode and rust over the years and then snap off. ??? I'd of thought that the other way of using the bricks across would be more long lasting.
Absolutely brilliant but I have to ask one question Wouldn’t you have had it done quicker by hiring 10 polish guys for a day ? Ok sure it wouldn’t have looked as good and may be a bit unstable and the garden would be full of beer cans but you would have given joy to 10 people by giving them work. Maybe next time you can consider it
I've had a LOT of people ask me for a pizza oven. I cant source the fire bricks ar the moment due to lockdown but will once it's been lifted and build a pizza oven for sure 🤙🏼🧱
@@RodianBuilds Not sure you're still monitoring comments Rodian, but I'm looking to put a slab and a cast dome pizza oven on a structure like you've done for this BBQ. Now I'm only wondering if a stretcher bond wall can take the weight (I'm guessing 600 lbs)? I know you probably don't want to give advice that specific but is there some sort of table I can reference?
Joeybuilder0114 after I watched this yesterday I thought I can do that easy but then my neighbours had a party and got very loud and annoying so when they all passed out I popped into his garden and laid a few bricks of my own if you know what I mean I had a big shit on his brand new decking is what I mean that’ll teach em to not invite me I mean be too noisy oh yeah I need to mention I had explosive diarrhoea Hope this helps your query
Opportunity missed there. The chair should been Hollied. I know you are young but look at the old game shows and you will soon see the visual appeal for the viewer, not sure it was a dude in a cap and a brick in his hand.😜
