Here we don’t insulate the floor at all! We insulate the skirting and leave vent ports! Our temps get down to -52 in the winters!

Excellent idea. I'm poised to build a cabin in Halliburton. Would it be possible to lay the rigid foam with the 3/4 ply and build the walls on top of the floor? Or do you have to build the walls first? Thanks

Is the R value of this type of floor significantly better than a putting the insulation between the floor joists? Great video - thanks for taking the time to put these together.

Hi Steve, I was curious if you screw down the panels?

Thanks for the great video Steve, you're a good teacher. I will be using this method for my cabin floor. I will be sure to visit your web site as well for any other tips I can use to build my cabin. I hope you have something on the best way to keep the pipes warm under the cabin. I'm thinking heat tape? Like under a mobile home... Anyway I'm a the information gathering stage. Thanks again. :)

Stryker 2 Hi Stryker! Thanks for your note. Good to hear from you. Where are you building? The floor insulation method I explain makes the floor a whole lot warmer than no insulation, but when it gets down below 0ºF, the floor still isn't really warm. If you're looking for the kind of thing a baby can happily crawl on during a blizzard, then you might consider some infloor heating. Either that or everyone just wears slippers. Bye for now, Steve

@@baileylineroad Thanks for this video! I am using this method in renovating an old hunting cabin I bought in Maine. To keep my waterline insulated I built a long insulated box that contains the pipes as they enter the house from below. The box is buried in the ground below the frost line, and opens up into the house so I can reach the water line in case I need to install or replace heat tape. One question- I'm researching the best type of underfloor insulation to complement the above-floor insulation you are showing us in this video. I am leaning towards filling the space between my floor joists with spray foam or foam board, OR installing an insulated 'cabin skirt' . I could also be convinced to do both. However, I'm concerned about trapping moisture between the two layers of foam above and below the floor. Any thoughts on this?

How do you attach the foam to the two layers of OSB?

Hi there! Would it be possible to do the same thing but with expanded polystyrene?
@lpswoodworking623

Steve, I don't have the space, but it would work with 1 inch foam board. Is this worth the effort? Don't think there's 3/4 inch foam...

Great video. Question though what about the weight of a standard refrigerator after time does it now or compress

why does the door have to be there before the insulation?

Yeah that's great where do you get this stuff? I'm building a cabin in Canada and can't find these panels.
@baileylineroad
@baileylineroad 9 лет назад
***** Hi There! I'm in Canada, too. Building supply outlets can get it, but you can do the same thing with some 2" extruded polystyrene foam and 1/2" plywood. Just put the foam down first, then the plywood. Drive screws through the plywood and foam and about 1 1/2" into the floor joists. Drop by for a visit sometime at my online destinations: stevemaxwell.ca and realrurallife.com. You’ll find lots of new videos, articles and product giveaways, plus a chance to see what we’re up to on our island homestead. Take care, and thanks for watching! Steve

hi steve, im confused. Isn't the OSB supposed to be the subfloor? Why its is different in your video?

Great Video !!! Where can you buy this Foam ? And what exactly is it called ? I went to Lowes and Nobody New what I was talking about !! Thanks ...

Short DawgHi Short Dawg, The foam insulation panels are made by a company called Ovrx. Or at least they were the last time I looked. Googling things online, I haven't been able to find this product specifically. I'll check with the manufacturer, but in the mean time you can achieve the same results using 2" extruded polystyrene foam with 7/16" OSB fastened on top with screws driven down through everything. I hope this helps. What sort of a project do you have in mind for yourself? If you like what you see here with my videos, please consider signing up for my newsletter at www.stevemaxwell.ca. There's lots more good stuff where this came from. Bye for now, Steve

@@baileylineroad Hi Steve. Love your website and your youtube channel! After watching your video, I did this on my cabin floor in western Maine, except I used polyiso foam (with the retardant vapor barrier) on the recommendation of my local building supply store. I covered that foam with advantech subflooring. I am now looking into installing a floor covering and am wondering if you think I should install a breathable flooring like wood- to prevent moisture getting trapped against the Advantech OSB? I realize you typically use a more breathable foam product, but have you ever had issues with moisture getting trapped against your subfloor? Thanks!

Nope....run all heating ducts under standard subfloor and water lines near the top of the joist spaces. Where ever there is a duct dropped under the joists it gets boxed into a chase keeping all ducting inside the conditioned space of the cabin or bonus room over a garage. Sheath and Sprayfoam the underside of the entire structure. If the underside needs to be nice (like a garage cieling). Add another false cieling and cover with your finish. Venting through this final layer will allow air movement below the insulation. This works any where in any climate...the only thing that changes is amount of foam.

Imperial is such an asinine measurement system. 2 7/16"?
@baileylineroad
@baileylineroad 8 лет назад
Hi Malumbrus! Yes, a lot of people feel that way. I'm comfortable building in either Metric or Imperial, but the building world in North America is still almost exclusively Imperial. Even where I live, in Canada (a supposedly metric country), 90%+ projects are specced and measured in inches and feet. It certainly takes more mental skill to work accurately in Imperial, but I rather like the history and character of inches, feet, sixteenths and fractions. I can use both, but my preference is Imperial. Take care and thanks for watching! Steve

***** I live in Canada too. I measured my bedrooms for baseboard cuts and I did it in cm. When I brought to to the guy at the hardware store for cuts, he was completely baffled.

Than you're probably a noob when it comes to building then. Because we all still use imperial. We never jumped on the band wagon in the '70's. Only architects and engineers (who never get their hands dirty did) aka not real men. 😉

What psi 2"foam was applied to the floor? Thanks

Hi There! I've always just used the ordinary extruded polystyrene foam sold in building supply yards. I believe that's 40 psi. Thanks for watching! Steve
