@@TMPK Couple Questions for you. When you are putting the 1x6 up against the ceiling, if the ceiling isn't true wont your coffered end up wavy ? Also if you aren't putting blocks onto your 8 x 16s how do you get your reveal to be the same all the way around. Thanks.
@TMPK
@TMPK 2 года назад
@@tsmith1729 yes, it can end up wavy. But this is new construction and it’s pretty flat up there. You can drop it down a half inch and level the whole thing if you want. You could block it, but after 15 + years, just eyeballing the reveal is good enough at 12 ft up in the air. I like to think I have laser eyes at this point 🤩

Great video! I'm a 71-year old grandma and a friend who's in her 40s is going to help me with all of my crown moulding and trim in my home. I've always wanted a coffered ceiling and the way you did it looks doable. So that's now on my To Do List as well! Thanks so much. -- Only thing I did so I could watch the video all the way through was to mute the music - and I'd turn it back on when I saw you were saying something. Ha.

Margaret D haha thanks! Yeah the music isn’t for everyone, but I have music editing background so a lot of my video edits are based around the audio. I’m not sure if I can do it another way lol good luck with your coffer!
@toobad9946
@toobad9946 4 года назад
Margaret, I certainly appreciate your spirit and initiative but please consider renting portable scaffolding for your project. It's a lot harder (but not impossible) to fall off of scaffolding than a ladder. Also, the size of the molding configuration must be adjusted based upon ceiling height. If you only have 8' ceilings your moldings should be about 1/2 as big as he installed. Scale is important when selecting moldings. Good luck and be safe!

After watching you install your "ledger" board, I now see the genius of FINISH CARPENTRY TV hanging this board with toggle bolts. It makes it easier and you're able to fine tune position before driving in all the framing nails. I like your lighter weight framing though. FC TV's framing was too much 2x material IMO. Your framing makes wiring runs too.
@totallynottrademarked5279
@totallynottrademarked5279 4 года назад
If you are not using MDF FCTVs method is much better at stopping movement in the trim boards. I would never trust nails on anything that is attached to the ceiling. I've seen too many things fall from the nail getting pushed out as the building takes on humidity over the years to ever trust a nail to win vs gravity.

I'm loving the content man! I'm planning on tackling my first coffered ceiling. But I have a question, how do you determine the right depth or thickness. Is it according to ceiling height or is there a standard measurement to these coffered ceilings? Thanks
@TMPK
@TMPK 3 года назад
Thanks! There’s no right or wrong. If it’s 8 foot I’d do a flat coffered or 1x4 drop, with whatever width you want. 9ft 1x6 drop, 10 ft and up, 1x6 or 1x8 🤷‍♂️ just think about what the crown’s drop you choose also.

Awesome editing, and great info! Just a tip, if you can drive it in the house (and the budget permits), an electric scissor lift would've made it easier than using a ladder AND safer too. Skyjack SJ16 is about 31" wide and gives 16 feet of lift, fits in most doorways, rent it for the day and charge the customer. I guess it might not be worth it for a one day job though.

tedpeek76 yeah I used to use a 100 inch stick then I realized with a pretty good tape, you can stretch out and dent the Sheetrock (behind where the crown will be) at 100 with your thumb nail then reach the other way for a total haha. If it’s not sheetrock, sometimes I hold the pencil and the tape in the same hand and mark 100 that way lol

You are very talented. I wish you could do my family room like that. Just drop the gimicks, you don't need them.

Awesome video man I'm a finsh carpenter too and aways looking for new ways to do stuff. Work smarter not harder like the idea of using 2x8s to hold up your first 2 long 2x8s when your by yourself.
