It's a long one! Just another coffered ceiling day to eat away whatever keeps the disk in my spine from touching each other. :/

I have searched all over St. Louis and all I can find is 2 square edges and 2 eased over edges per board at Home Depot and at Menards. I am looking for MDF like you have- 4 square edges. Your videos are great. What do you recommend to use to make the joints look seamless and smooth as if there’s no connection?
@TMPK
@TMPK 8 месяцев назад
Thanks! I normally bevel my flat joints at about 2° with the longer side being the face of what’s visible. Glue and sand. Then they’re pretty seamless. But there’s always that stubborn joint that seems like it’s just never gonna be right… for that I use regular 2-part car bondo. You have to work fast cause it dries fast but after it does it sands down as smooth as glass. And paints well. For a stained joint, well I would just keep trying till it’s perfect. There’s nothing that hides actual wood grain cracks good enough for my eye. That’s the main reason stain-grade projects cost much more.

Great video. You must have spent days on those nail impact cuts. I landed my first coffer ceiling. Any advice on price. Materials are at 600 but have no idea where to start labor. Don't want to take advantage of the client or myself. Thank you for your time and efforts.
@TMPK
@TMPK 7 месяцев назад
I can do them pretty quickly now so that kind of factors into my pricing. I would say labor only, and no painting, on the one in this video would be around $800-$1000. Depending on ceiling height. The higher the more expensive.

So I am new to your channel and I have a legitimate question, I am not trying to troll you but as a construction builder myself, The company I own does not do the elaborate finish carpentry, such as coffered ceilings. I on the other hand in my own house and properties I own go all out. The only thing I am missing left to do at my current house is the coffered ceilings. I waited because of the price. Seeing I am in a 400k house the price on materials as you know can be crazy high, will all the crown molding and wood alone, I was pricing out between 1k to 2k a room just in materials. I didn't want to spend 20k on coffered ceilings for a 400k house. Then I stumbled upon your channel and saw you were using MDF board, and I said well that changes the price big time, redoing the numbers with what you are using and it is doable. My question to you is, if you are are doing high end homes how are they okay with the MDF? I mean it has a usual self life of ten years or less. I would be pissed if I spent high dollars and then my ceilings were falling down in ten years or less. Have you had any problems with the MDF? I do not mind spending more on real wood as it is my house, but I do not think it will add much value to my house as I am maxed out in value in my neighborhood as I have a lot of extras already so I would be doing it just to please my eyes. As you are putting real wood as the main stabilizers and the MDF as the decorative cap and painting it, is it safe to assume that the MDF Coffered ceilings will last 20 years plus? I watched a few of your videos and some of them like this one is simple and more cost effective so I am thinking about pulling the trigger as it is winter and time to do some me projects that are fun lol. Let me know your thoughts and great channel!

@TMPK
@TMPK 8 месяцев назад
Thanks, I don’t know for a sun room? Maybe glass? lol I know that’s probably not what you meant 🤣 I love tongue and groove V-groove on ceilings, and I love when they’re painted white. I’ve seen some stained, but the white or white washed looks so much better to me. Also on a sunroom, you might even paint the ceiling a sky blue color like people do their porches. I’ve always thought that looked pretty cool, gives me a good southern feeling, like a Charleston water front mansion or something.

@tlanc1283 9 месяцев назад
Would love to learn how you measured out the grid to center the boards. ;) Amazing work!
@TMPK
@TMPK 9 месяцев назад
Okay. This is going to sound more complicated than it is because I’m not good at explaining things lol Let’s say the room is 150 inches wide. And I know the beams before crown mould are 8.75 inches wide. That’s a 2x8 at 7.25 and 2 1x6s at .75 each so 8.75 total. And there’s 2 beams so a total of 17.5 inches of beams. I then subtract 17.5 from our room total “150” to get 132.5. Now that 132.5 is the 3 spaces in between the beams so I divide it by 3, getting 44.1666667 Now from the edge of the room I’ll measure over 44.1666667 or like 44 3/16 will be close enough, then make a mark, from that mark measure over 8.75 (the first beam) and make another mark. Then 44 3/16 again, then 8.75 again, then the remaining space should be 44 3/16. Or very close to it. Then measure from the beam mark into the beam .75 to allow for the 1x6 and make a mark for where the 2x8 goes. Then repeat on the opposite side of the room and pop chalk lines. It’s a lot easier than it sounds, just practice on the garage floor or something lol

Yeah the video turned out good but I don't think I'm going with the coffered ceilings. Too me it looks like way too much trim doing it's best to look like it's functional ceiling beams. Think I'm going to just plain drywall the ceiling, or put those running boards up and use some kind of tile.

The one in his video is a 12ft x13 ft and 9 ft tall. I used 2x8’s for the framing, 1x6 for the sides and 1x8s for the bottoms. You can shrink it down for lower ceilings or check out my “how to flat coffered ceiling” video, that’s what I’d recommend for an 8 ft ceiling. Kind of like wainscoting on the ceiling.
