the author does like to from scratch, shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. ru-vid.comUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ as another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us dont have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we wont be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.

Yes, I bought Simple Finish and have made many test pieces on different wood. I’d like your opinion on woods that the finish does not work as well, and also those it does. Lovely work. Great aesthetic and not overly complex for the amateur. You said your jointer is 8" and not enough to handle the wide boards for the top. So, here's my question: after the panel glue up, how did you handle flattening the top? Router sled? Hand plane? Surfaced with the X-Carve? Thanx!
@shaunb66
@shaunb66 4 года назад
Thanks! If you are careful with board orientation, there really isn't much flattening needed for a panel of that size. Especially once it is attached to the base. This one came out pretty dang flat.

What do you think about using this style of base for a round table? May it be unstable? If I go for 1,2m in diameter and the top of the base around 1m That would be typically 800mm in the bottom? Sounds to narrow in the bottom for me. What do you think?

@woodysranch2690

I would have thought mounting the bottom stretcher slightly above the floor level (1/2 inch or so) would not affect strength, but allow for the table to be moved without the chance of dragging debris across a hardwood floor with resulting scratches. Perhaps even a gentle curve as you have used with good effect in other parts of this project.
@lowercase01
@lowercase01 4 года назад
Also avoid the issue of those gaps between base and floor (knowing no floor is ever completely flat).
@jeremyspecce
@jeremyspecce 3 года назад
Brett Jonathan I think that’s an even MORE important point. You’d hate to have a high spot in the floor make one of the ends float.
@coreystephenson1610
@coreystephenson1610 2 года назад
If the table was on a hardwood floor, one woild assume there would some type of pad/s under the legs which would prevent scratches in it's own right and would also lift the table slightly to prevent the issues mentioned below.

@woodysranch2690 4 года назад
Also you dont mention it, but with a solid wood table top, it will expand and contract in width, how will this work with the threaded inserts you used which seem to not use a racetrack movement mounting hole? Or perhaps you only mount the top to the center stretcher in which case there will be no expansion movement but there is the chance the top may warp since it is not supported outwards from the center?
@shaunb66
@shaunb66 4 года назад
The holes in the base are drilled oversize and placed out near the legs and down the center stretcher. The bolts and washers allow the table top to expand and contract.
