In this video, Neiman & I broke out some shovels and made a fire pit area in our yard! During phase one of our build, we dug up the area, enclosed the area with cedar planks, built the fire pit with bricks and mulched the surrounding area. This was a 3-day weekend DIY project. We have some more plans to finish up our fire pit area so be sure to get subscribed to see the final result!
Total material investment for PHASE ONE: $350
Materials Used:
Black Mulch: bit.ly/3oqs9Dc
Landscape Fabric: low.es/3D238T2
Yard Staples: low.es/3iloV0a
Cedar Planks: thd.co/2WqGowc
Bricks: low.es/3mckGFc

I would put pea gravel around your fire pit then use the mulch for the sitting area. That mulch is a fire hazard.
@FurnitureFlippingTeacher
@FurnitureFlippingTeacher 3 года назад
We will definitely be looking into this. When we initially discussed with people from Lowe’s they mentioned there shouldn’t be much worry. Thanks for advising!

Exactly what I was thinking. I did this same firepit area, almost exactly, and that mulch will start smolder and catching fire out of nowhere. As much as i tried to mitigate it, the little invisible embers would find their way in, and boom you have 2 fires. I switched to gray pea gravel the next year. No problems since. Best of luck guys!

My husband and I did many projects ourselves too. On our first house, there was a huge increase in interest rates. Over 12-15% so people ended up walking away from their homes because they couldn’t afford to convert from construction loan to mortgage. (It was in the 80’s and an awful time.) The house we bought was left for several years and alder trees had tried to take over the font and back yards!! We pulled all of them, rented a rototiller that was almost as tall as me (I couldn’t turn corners, I could only pivot 😜🤪😳). Then, we laid topsoil, peat and other soil amendments (we got truckloads, not delivered) and finally, we laid the grass seed. Every day I went over it pulling the bits of thistles that were trying to sprout. Hard work. I had sweat dripping in my eyes and down my nose! 😂 Very satisfying once complete! Love love love the drone!

You guys did a great job and this was an interesting break from furniture! My only concern for you is that the inevitable fire embers that pop out of your firepit don't set your mulch on fire.
@vzeimen

I'd be concerned about that as well. That mulch dries out really quickly, especially in that Nebraska wind! It will be so fun to have hot chocolate and roast marshmallows on a chilly night though

You guys did an awesome job!!! Can’t wait to see more. I usually buy my mulch by the yard for $30. They usually dump a scoop and a half into the pickup and off we go. Some garden centers charge more so shop around. Luckily, mine is a supply place a few miles down the street. I got my soil for raised beds this year too. Very economical.

@FurnitureFlippingTeacher
@FurnitureFlippingTeacher 3 года назад
You sure can ask! This project specifically we wanted as we like to spend time outside so this would immediately serve us and really help make this place home. Most of the project we can break down and take with us when the time comes for us to relocate. It definitely may seem like a funny thing to do to put money into something that will eventually be gone but hey we are living for today and will enjoy it until the time comes 😁

I hope your black mulch does not bleed color. I have bought red mulch in the past (for flower beds) that bleed terribly when water was applied. Staining hands & clothing. The bleeding resulted in a great amount of fading. Thus, causing replacement sooner than I desired. I can't remember which variety of mulch I purchased. My choice is cedar mulch. Cedar smells good, holds its color, & the durability is great. Living in South Carolina this seems to be a better choice for me. Everything looks wonderful. Can't wait to see your finished area!

I love your fire pit area, nice work. Have some Q's tho. What is in your mulch you put around the pit? Mulch is usually flameable and not recommended. Also, did you leave a little air space between the bricks, esp the bottom row? It helps the fire burn in our experience. Love your show and both of you working together!!

Weed barrier will prevent weeds from rooting deeper than the barrier, but weeds will root in the mulch/stones. My suggestion is to use a product called PREEN every spring before weeds start to germinate. You might have to sprinkle this a few times during the summer, but it’s worth it. Weeding (I know this from experience) is backbreaking work. The weed barrier will make weeds pull up easier, but it’s still weeding. Beautiful job!
