Just finished my gate and it’s lovely, thanks for your information and video

I built the same type of gate, about the same length. Not as pretty, I used scrap round tube. I'm not really a fan of the tabs welded to the angle track, you're going to have exposed anchors that somebody has to drive over.Better way to do that is to lay 2" x 1/8" flatbar on the concrete and bolt it down from the center. Then stitch weld the track angle over top of the anchors. My track's been in place for 10 years no problems, and if I ever had to remove it it's easy to cut stitch welds. No sense in trying to powdercoat the track pretty, some cold galvanizing spray holds up surprisingly well. Mine uses the same type of wheels and rollers but I built a remote opener that uses roller chain.

The box is very easy to disassemble, I weld it in without the hardware and paint it like that. Also you weld it upside down. The J hook is supposed to come up so they can’t lift it out of the lock. 👍

Very well done. I made my self one but its only 10 feet long and it has 2 track wheels on the back like chain link gates do. I made the frame out of 2x4s and attached a metal post on the side for the track wheels. On the bottoms it has a V groove track and wheel. It’s holding very well after 2 years and slides very easy.

Great video thanks for making this! I've found that for those outer corners off the table, the fireball weld squares help keep everything square and on the same plane.

I like your idea of attaching the unit to the gate itself instead of installing it at 90° I will be using this type of design when I make mine. Cheers!

Love your videos jumbo.. I’ve been building gates for many years . Like watching others build to pick up on what others do. When I use this lock box deals I take them apart super easy take off all paint and weld them up same way you did and sent it over to power coat. Never had a problem. Usually don’t like to weld after coating Just a tip. Hope it helps..

I love your welding videos and you do great work. Just a thought, I would have disassembled the lock and welded the box in before powdercoating. The new owner will probably want it rekeyed anyway, since the manufacturer say "Keyed the same". I just found out Kwikset makes a version of this lock without the the outside box. It appears to have a U bracket going over the gate to hold it in place with rollers on either sides, however it is blocked by the tree. Great video

I was trying to figure out the same thing, how does the gate stay in place while rolling? @Jimbo, could you let us know?
@TyFreeborn
@TyFreeborn 3 месяца назад
@@smokeythebirdbrain The last 3 or 4 seconds of the video show the roller near the top of one side of the gate in action. He mentioned he'd built and pre-installed that upside down U-bracket that holds both vertical rollers -- one on each side.

good job . When you welded the housing for the lock and the handle, you could move them away or take them off, because it partially burned... but, ok, a small thing. Mostly good work. Greetings from Slovenia

Question... With that type of lock, what keeps someone from lifting the end of the gate up to clear the hook of the lock from the post it is latched too and opening the gate? Would it have been better to install the lock box on the stationary post ? That way the gate can't be lifted to unlatch it from the lock. Jim as always love the videos and the builds. Great work as usual Jimbo! I was also wondering how inside rollers were affixed to stop gate from falling in?
@DrKniz
@DrKniz 2 года назад
Excellent point. A flat piece of metal could be welded onto the post protruding a couple inches above the top of the gate. So when the gate is closed it would prevent it from being lifted as you indicated.
@danielavalos2005

The hook lock should have been installed with the hook going up to avoid the gate being picked up....also you can take the internals out of the hook lock to weld the box before the powder coating...

This is very impressive work. One piece of advice I have is to ensure that your threading tool is 60 degrees and perpendicular to the work. You can get a fish tail gauge for this. That way your threads wont be biased to one side. Well done!

I reviewed your video because when I got a fabricator to make a gate for a 27 ft. rolling gate he said he needed shop drawings. As a trained draftsman I said, no problem. Easy. Until it wasn't. 🤔Your well produced video answers many of my questions and does, in fact, clarify many design detail considerations I had. That said, noting that the arch includes the two rollers plus clearance for the gate, other than stating that it was previously set in concrete, you didn't indicate the dimensions of the arch. You also didn't indicate any details for the lock end post. Just a 2 in X 2 in post set in concrete? As a result of that approach I noticed that arch wasn't powdered. In my case I plan on having the arch surface mounted on existing concrete and having both it and the end part powdered along with the gate. Also regarding the lock box, why didn't you just remove the lock assembly then weld the box in and let it get powdered before reinstalling the lock? Those things come out and reinstall quite easily If you have the key, a small flat tip screw driver (tweeker) and access to the jam face.

Yes it is possible with pulse effect, but since jimbo only had one lockbox to weld, the time to get hes perfect pulse setting would of been longer than to just stitch weld that one.
