We are finally starting to work in the vineyard and the first thing we need to do is build up a trellis to grow our grapes on. #muscadine #grapes

I left this same comment on one of your other videos (that video was two years ago so I am recommenting here) Love your videos. My suggestion: making sure it is in line, put the post that is in the middle of the line first, that will greatly reduce the amount of bow in the string caused by wind. If the wind still bows the string too much, go to the quarter and three quarter points. And if it still bows too much, why in the world are you trying to set posts during a tornado. We are Omi's BlackBerry Farm in Paige, Texas and we are fixin to plant 16 muscadines, 8 varieties, 2 of each. They will arrive in mid January from Ison's Nursery. We got our recommendations from Greg Ison himself and we can only say the nicest things about him. Greg also has a slew of instructional videos that are worth watching if you are just getting started with muscadines. If you are ever in central Texas, stop in for a visit. We may not always have berries (and soon grapes and figs) but we always have time to visit.

I'm building a musadine trellis in my backyard, and I'm following your instructions. So far, so good. 😊 I have dug the holes, and tomorrow, I will be setting the posts in cement. I forgot I needed a long drill bit, so I will run to Lowe's tomorrow to pick one up. I have my 9 guage wire and wire vices. I waited too late to order the Supreme and Isons muscadines that I really wanted, so I will have to wait until the next season to order them. In the meantime, I have triumph and cowart. I can't wait to see them start growing. Thank you for the tutorial.

Great work, Shane! My kin have been raising hybridized muscadines (mostly Ison's varieties) since around 1960. I've got a smaller vineyard here in Western NC -- around 400' of double tiered vines. Varieties include Carlos, Nesbitt, Black Beauty, Hunt, Summit & Tara. The Carlos (bronze) variety is the most frequently grown in the state of North Carolina. Making vino for the first time this year; appreciate your tips, buddy!

Bro, I learned everything I needed to know about building my trellises from this very video! You're awesome!!! I'm following the Ison's advice on fertilizing, so hopefully my single runners will all reach the top wire this year! The wire vises are an ingenious design and it was actually kinda fun installing them. 9 gauge wire is perfect, as you stated. Thank you, kind Sir.

Awesome good luck this year. Remember weed control. With heavy fertilizer comes heavy weeds which takes water and nutrients from the plants
@PureBlood42
@PureBlood42 2 года назад
@@KinfolkFarmofGeorgia - That's a good point. I have a lot of weeds and wild grasses along my short backyard single run of only 8 plants. Because of limited space in the city, each plant in the line is going to actually be trained to alternate from top wire to middle wire, if that makes sense. Otherwise, the vines would just become a tangled mess if they overlapped on the top wire. I know that's not preferable using any of the middle wire when it's harvest time, but hopefully not a backbreaker since it'll only be four plants on the middle wire!

@@KinfolkFarmofGeorgia Gotcha. I used the old-fashioned post-hole digger. You can't go 3' deep with that, due to the handles on the PHD not being able to grab the dirt. By the way, I saw another channel where a guy used a fence stretcher to pull the wire. Anyway, loved the video and appreciate it.

Make em wide you can go 3 ft. It's what I did. I used post hole digger to

When putting in your end post you said you used 80# of concrete. Did you have to widen your 2 foot deep hole bigger than the post hole digger width to allow the whole 80# bag of concrete to fill it up?
@KinfolkFarmofGeorgia

Yes and some times it's not a full 80# don't over think it. Just want it solid

when laying out you vinyard always (if space is available) run your post north and south for best sun on vines ------face sunrise early am extent your arms left hand will be pointing north right hand south the reason behind this is so sun is on all plants at the same time if you run east and west the sun will be only on the east end till it rises west end dont get sun for a while this is for ideal conditions per people that make a living selling muscadines also consider water for irrigation best to install pipe be fore vines start i found post set 24 ft apart wiyh 1 vine at the mid point takes about 3 yrs for 2 wire vines i put mine at top of post and other 4ft so i dont have to bend over you will need male and female talk to nurserys about this polination

Thanks for the info! I'm over in southern central NC and I'm waiting for delivery if some grape vines this spring. I'm trying to figure out how I want to build the trellis, and this one looks great! Do you happen to have any tips on soil ammendments (if any are even needed) for a soil thats higher percentage of clay?
@KinfolkFarmofGeorgia
@KinfolkFarmofGeorgia 2 года назад
No need. We deal with Georgia red clay and they do great. Get your fertilizer ready. 10 10 10 and calcium Nitrate

Great video, what types of Muscadine are you planting? Are you mulching the rows or cutting the grass?
@KinfolkFarmofGeorgia
@KinfolkFarmofGeorgia 3 года назад
Ison, Supreme, Black Beauty, lol just about all the variety that isons sell. We don't mulch around muscadines. Their roots can run shallow and the roots could run up into the mulch and if you have a hard freeze it could kill your plants. I spray for weed control.

@@KinfolkFarmofGeorgia Thanks, I'm in N.Florida about to put some in. I was planning on using silt fence but I will look into spraying. Do you know how the Seedless Fry produces from Ison's? I heard it might have low yields, their out for spring but maybe I can get one 2022.

Hey Shane the vineyard is looking really good, how long does a plant last? I know you said the fruit is best after 3 yrs. But how many years on average do they last? Mia is so cute barking at the pigs teeheehee, she a good puppy she stays pretty close to you and minds when you call her. I have one I have to say is either very dumb dog or a very smart dog. 8 yrs old and as much as she loves me she still won't mind! Won't come when I call her, I wasted a ton of money on obedience training that hasn't worked. When I call her she stands there and decides if "she" wants to listen or not then she either comes or takes off the other way! Glad my property's fenced or I'm sure I'd lose her to the wilds lol. Silly mutt! She's my baby so I I'll love her no matter if she minds or not. Lol. Much love from So.Cal.💟

@@KinfolkFarmofGeorgia my husband planted the first Isons vines in 2003. The trunks are 4-5 inch diameter. They still produce well(pruned yearly) but my inspiration is deceased by 4 years and I’m just not too sure how deeply to prune. I’ve been researching for older vine treatment.
