On my barn we have a covered porch that gets used quite a bit. To expand that area for storage and grilling we decided to build a paver patio. To do so we started by digging out the soil about 8 inches below grade. We then compacted 1-2 inches of clear 3/4 inch gravel base to fill any low spots. After covering that with commercial landscape fabric, we compacted another 2-3 inches of that same 3/4" clear gavel for drainage. After getting that leveled and pitched correctly we laid some 3/4 inch steel pipes for guides and added 1 inch of 3/8 inch clear chip stone and screed it even with the pipes. With a good base in place the pavers got installed and edged with paver edging. Finally poly sand was used to fill the joints and lock all the pavers in place. We also added a small privacy fence to hide an AC unit.

For those of us who don't have a father-in-law with a bobcat, this is completely unrealistic for the average homeowner. This is why most of end up hiring somebody to do the job.
@stevemulcahy5014
@stevemulcahy5014 5 месяцев назад
@@ncfriend5233 It just depends on how long you and your family want it looking like a building site. All a bobcat does is makes the digging part take a couple of hours with minimal effort rather than a day or two with loads of physical effort. If you want it done in a couple of days, then hiring a contractor to do it is the way.

How are you handling the steep incline leading into the patio? I’m sure it brings mulch, mud & water on the patio. I thought maybe a little knee wall then flatten out the slope with a flower bed. But not bad turn out real nice

Question: So why does everyone skip putting a gap between the pavers and place them tight? I've done brick pavers and we left 1/4" filled (filled with sand) to allow for expansion. Thanks!

Question please, sometimes after filling with sand joints and compacting, some paver edges pop out and not flat anymore. Know why that happens? Excellent work by the way!
@cathiwim
@cathiwim Месяц назад
Improper compacting(ya missed a spot) when compacting. Its easy to do.also frost heave. You have to know how deep to dig out, based on your frost line in your part of the country. Ours is 8 inches.

i’ve seen that concrete edge restraints are recommended when not using sand screeding. what made you stay with the traditional edge restraint?
@RFing22
@RFing22 3 месяца назад
Was just gonna comment this. This edging is not supposed to be used with this type of base. Everything I’ve seen says it has to be concrete

Lowe's, Menards, or Home Depot usually have some equipment/heavy equipment you can rent and have dropped off for daily/weekly rates! That's what I plan to do for mine :) Make sure you have 811 come out and mark gas and water lines before you dig.

was a great video, until I saw you put the weed barrier under the mulch. you will regret that in a couple of years when the mulch breaks down and you have a layer of compost on top of the weed barrier....which is a GREAT seed bed for weeds. Weed barrier works great under rocks to keep them from getting buried in the ground below, but not recommended under mulch.
