We are onto the pergola and privacy screen on this epic backyard transformation! We've got a modern style wood pergola going on top of the deck here, which will be also attached the house via a ledger board on the pergola. We are adding some custom privacy screens to the deck and patio area as well!

Looks fantastic, really good job. But a question if I may, How did you weather seal the roof of the pergola to the siding?

thanks a lot! so we just flash the top of the ledger with z flashing like we would with a deck ledger, then we install the siding and butt the polycarbonate panels up to the siding. It sits against it nice and tight and if any water happens to get behind that it will hit the flashing and go in front of the ledger board

How do you attach the base (the 4x4's) of the privacy screen to the pavers? Trying to do a privacy screen on a lanai that has pavers (on concrete footer) and stucco walls and ceiling.

in our area it is pretty much always required but depending where you live and how it is built you may not

Usually under 200 SQ feet and free standing (not attached to the house) doesn't require a permit.

Interesting idea with the ledger board, how does that affect the flashing. I'd like to see how you button up the ledgers to the house. Seems like this would definitely direct water against the home wrap. I didnt care for the paver pattern where the 2 tiles mixed, but it grew on me and looks really nice in the end. I really like the diamond shape one. Waiting for the day you wrap the columns in miters. Great job!

I probably didnt explain that really well...there is no notch on the top of the ledger board, only the sides and bottom. Top of the ledger gets flashed just like the deck ledger but the siding tucks underneath and on the sides to eliminate the need for some of the J channel. Wayyyyy too many miters to ever try that probably lol, but who knows!

I find that electrical a bit questionable, also the use of wood on the fire pit, but overall everything looks good. I would have used outdoor wiring on that stuff and probably used some metal flashing on the inner border of the firepit just so it doesnt set the sides on fire if it gets that hot.

are you staining wet PT ? your work looks really nice overall just alittle interested in the decking you use. i've been using Azek only for the last 10yr i've worked with various brands however

on this project we were using a product called duracolor from prowood that is color treated from the plant. We wanted it a little darker so we applied a coat of stain. We do stain wet PT all the time though with water based stains and have had really good results

most of the ones we used here are in the amazon store, we also used a few deckorators lights. If the amazon lights go bad I just replace them, but they have been super reliable for the last few years

Ant really screwed up the math. 10 screws per hanger, 14 hangers per ledger, and another beam is 280 not 240. Sean stop distracting that guy with the camera, he can't do math on the fly! Where can I find a chart on what size 2x materials to use on a span between posts of a free standing pergola? Does your pergola slope away from the house for drainage and how does the water run off the pergola roof panels? A gutter?
