loving this style of build video, no nonsense, just telling you the main things that you need to know and no voiceover for every freaking step you do (not that I have anything wrong with people that do that style, but it can be annoying at times). Anyway keep up what you're doing, love your style and your work :)

You could do those bars with rivets, just heat the ends up and flatten the tips.

try using a bigger dish, the metal will move a lot quicker. ive made a apocalyptic mask myself.
@ironcladindustries
@ironcladindustries 8 лет назад
i was considering that, bigger dish with the same radius? or deeper also?
@capatinswifty
@capatinswifty 8 лет назад
+Ironclad Industries i would go wider and maybe a little deeper. i think my one is about an inch in the center.but making it deeper will probably mean more planishing work
@ironcladindustries
@ironcladindustries 8 лет назад
+callum russell okay thanks, i actually dont planish at all, it makes armor look too medieval so i try to keep it as rough as possible
@capatinswifty
@capatinswifty 8 лет назад
I planish lightly a bit because I use the ball pein end of the hammer
@ironcladindustries
@ironcladindustries 8 лет назад
+callum russell oh yeah you would have to then, after using that ball peen in the video i move to a 3 lb sledge and i rounded one side to fit the radius of the dish, that worked really great, and was surprisingly smooth
@TheJamie1103
@TheJamie1103 8 лет назад
why not make a mold for your head pour some metal into it and use that for dishing/planing and make a second one thats the width of your head and you clamp the sheet onto it and hammer it around the cylinder so itll fit on your head

sand bags work great for dishing steel
@cheyennew811
@cheyennew811 8 лет назад
+Terry Leigh How heavy do the sandbags need to be and how dense?
@tleg6969
@tleg6969 8 лет назад
+cheyennew811 weight isn't really a factor, size is. You use them under the steel like he's doing with the stump.
@tleg6969
@tleg6969 8 лет назад
+cheyennew811 not so dense that they won't give, but not so shallow that you pound all the sand out of the way

The dishing wouldn't be half as bad if you mounted the wood piece in an ergonomical height, instead of dishing on your knees or on top of a much too high table.

@ironcladindustries
@ironcladindustries 8 лет назад
its not too bad to get tools for, cheap tin snips can be less than $20 and can cut up to 16 gauge usually, and steel you can salvage if you know where to look

@gateway8833

I'm really new to the channel but if you can get a section of tree trunk or a few 4x4's on end, just need as many as it takes to make a hollow the size you need it. You can use a grinder or a chainsaw (use the tip, it's really dangerous) and grind out a dish. If you don't have thoes you can use charcoal and a claw hammer. If you have a Blacksmith around sometimes they use them and they may help you for some coin, or beer or some help around the shop. let me know if you need more direction.

Why does everyone seem to think post apocalyptic means it has to look hastily and haphazardly made?
@ironcladindustries
@ironcladindustries 7 лет назад
I don't think that, I just prefer that look, it does make sense though, you use what you can find, making things without necessarily all the tools or supplied you would need to make it nice, I actually do have a line of armor that's nice and well made, it's for the military of my post apoc world, and it's very uniform and nice, this helmet was for a rough scrapper costume
@GreatSmithanon
@GreatSmithanon 7 лет назад
I've always just found the scrap metal thing odd. It doesn't take much skill or expertise to do basic blacksmithing. It takes more specialized equipment to weld than it does to smith, and files are almost always going to be readily available even in a post-apocalyptic world.
@ironcladindustries
@ironcladindustries 7 лет назад
But that takes much more time, and this isn't just "a post apocalypse world" this is my post apocalypse world, that I'm writing a book and making a webseries on, there would be industrial tools and methods available, there would be fresh new sheets of metal available from foundries, but an outlaw gang isn't going to have access to them, they could have the tools because they aren't all that rare, but the material supply would be
@ironcladindustries
@ironcladindustries 7 лет назад
And if your trying to make a helmet in a few hours your not going to want to blacksmith it if you can just weld it, or sit and file and polish it up when you can leave it rough and it's just as functional as a polished nice helmet

We're do you get your metal for these projects? What gauge? Loved the video pls make some cool maybe spiked pauldrons
@ironcladindustries
@ironcladindustries 8 лет назад
usually i scavenge it from shop projects, that way its already beat up and rusty, and i like about 16 or 18 ga for costume projects 14 or 12 ga for functional armor

+Ironclad Industries Where to salvage steel from for projects like this? And what tools do you recommend buying first?
@ironcladindustries
@ironcladindustries 8 лет назад
scrap bins at welding shops usually will sell their scraps cheap or just give them away, welding shops in agricultural areas specifically, or a junkyard, old oil drums or burn barrels are great, and a throatless shear, roper whitney junior punch, angle grinder, rivet gun, and a small welder, welder is about $500 for a small one, i recommend miller brand, and everything else is under $100 each
@nightmarius

@Dummythiccdakota
@Dummythiccdakota 8 лет назад
+Drut agem you could cut the hard hole with that plasma easily, and probably weld a nice piece of tool steel to the top of it as well. The only equipment I have a a 30 dollar angle grinder and some old files for shaping the horn, and mine turned out not too shabby.
@ironcladindustries
@ironcladindustries 8 лет назад
+Drut agem nice, I bet I could make one, ive just been using a bug chunk of round bar I welded to my table to do any hot hammering on
