How to Build a PC - Show Notes!
In this video, we put together a very fast, Virtual Reality-Ready gaming PC from a mixture of new parts and some freebies I had sitting around. This will be used for video production, games,music production and running an Oculus Rift virtual reality headseat - all of which take a lot of processing power. But of course, we wanted to do it on the lowest possible budget.
First of all, here are the components we used:
Motherboard: amzn.to/2LJW4AZ
CPU: amzn.to/2GZ4TZ8
Memory:amzn.to/2Sz1e5q
SSD: amzn.to/2C4HM9R or regular drive: amzn.to/2AqPGtT
Video Card: www.ebay.com/b/Graphics-Video...
Then, I already had the following items in stock, but here are some recommendations based on today’s research:
Case: amzn.to/2Vlpwl7
Power Supply:amzn.to/2BYR8Ue
Keyboard+Mouse: amzn.to/2BS1Wn5
Fan: amzn.to/2RqjQaj

Just ordered the parts list and looking forward to building this with my kids as a fun summer project. Thanks MMM!

It's so cool to watch you building a PC. I've first read your blog 2 and a half years ago and it totally changed my life. My current savings rate is 60% and I only wish I had read it sooner! Anyway yeah I love computer hardware so it's awesome to see you doing something else I care about!

Nice! Glad to see you are reviving this channel! Thanks so much for doing this, learned a ton from your blog. Sold my car a year ago and never looked back. Riding my bike everywhere - a money-printing fountain of youth indeed! To the video: yeah, so glad that crypto miners are no longer inflating graphics card's prices. Good build for not a lot of money!

I love your blog. Do you still have an outdoor gym? Would like to see a video of that, maybe even a typical workout. I am wondering how you protect it from corrosion. Greetings from Germany.
@MrMoneyMustacheChannel
@MrMoneyMustacheChannel 5 лет назад
Thanks Tom. Yes, the outdoor gym is now greatly expanded and located in the back courtyard of my "MMM HQ" co-working space in downtown Longmont. Rust is not really a problem because the plates come with black paint and the bar is chrome plated. Hardly any rust after 10+ years outdoors, and you can always repaint them too, with exterior grade spray paint.

Nice idea! My son wants to do this, so I'll show him the video. Too bad he doesn't have any tech-savvy people IRL to help with this project, but this is the next best thing. Thanks a lot MMM!

Sweet! I'm sure there are a few fans out there that remember soldering motherboards together, back when computers were in kit form. Recently rediscovered the fun of setting up a PC from components - a gaming PC too (I gather more influence from the 13-yr old?) and can recommend to others Jeff Attwood's (of StackOverflow fame) 'Building a PC' series on YT. One very cool thing is the fact that you are using much better quality components than if you bought an off-the-shelve system, for close to the same price or a little more if you are getting a high-end graphics card, etc. This is also illustrated by the cases - the cases are very nice to work with - (like a Mercedes 300D) designed to be fixed by the homeowner. One other recommendation: a local shop can be really helpful, say a Micro Center, since they might have classes, and the sales folks are usually pretty knowledgeable and can save you a bit of time.

Since you're branching out, could you do a vid on how you used the Hardie cement boards on your studio etc with the gaps in between without letting rain in behind and also what type of paint you used on them? 🙏I'm sure LMM could help with the camera work and music!

A high-end graphics card is a big investment whether you buy used or new. So I would consider buying a new (but older-generation & discounted) card that comes with a warranty, usually 3 years. A new card also has a longer life expectancy than a used card, unless the used card is barely used. My last few high-end cards lasted 5-6 years at most. If you buy a used card that has been used for N years, that is how much lifespan you lose. If a used card is 6 years old, you should get it for free!

hey MMM, I've watched your video Interview with Gavin and it inspired me to start a youtube channel too. I'm wondering what kind of equipment do you need to start filming videos without turning people away because of bad audio/video quality? Do you use lighting too? Any other uselful tips or tools you think ok? Thanks a lot!

MMM AND GAMING PCs YASSSSSSSSSSS

Having just built a great Gaming PC for myslef (and as a mustachian) i recommend investing in a 50$ case. It will improve airflow and overall performance drastically.
@yb9426
@yb9426 5 лет назад
I recommend also investing 30 $ in a CPU cooler, in the same spirit..
@PCGamingGoodies
@PCGamingGoodies 5 лет назад
@@yb9426 Graphics cards are pretty cool these days, mostly due to better power efficiency (thus, less heat). But you still need to have some ways to monitor GPU temp and CPU temp, of course.
@yb9426
@yb9426 5 лет назад
PCGamingGoodies Thank you for the reply. His Motherboard is capable of monitoring all the temps i believe. The ryzen and the 1070 will perform better under stress if cooled properly.

For those not tech-savvy enough but still want to go a similar route, you can a buy a "bare-bone" PC offered by some PC sellers, such as Avadirect. They assemble the case, main board, power supply for you and even do some testing on it. Then you buy and assemble your own hard drive, memory, and graphics card, which can be done by less savvy users.

It used to be harder - these days if it is the wrong port/bus, it won't fit. On the old days, plug the power cable one pin off and you can fry the expensive motherboard :)

Building PC's is a hobby of mine, though perhaps not terribly useful now that I've made the one PC I need. :) I recommend the RU-vid channel run by Oafah as a sort of Mr Money Mustache of PC building. He punches the PC building community in the face frequently and encourages people to shop smart. One example is his series where he creates a "shitbox" that can play games for a cost of

The only thing missing in the video is choice of monitor. For high-end use such as gaming, design, video editing, etc., that is not to be decided lightly. Monitor qualities range widely. Some are not cheap either. Name brands like Samsung could have duds too. You have to read reviews and choose one that makes sense for you.

Good question! In this case it was pre-pasted nicely onto the heatsink+fan assembly that came with the CPU. Very convenient to have all these things come together, plus the fan is nearly silent.

The cryptocurrency price "crash" you reference @3:00 has recovered - and then some. The folks bailing out of their mining rig operations and selling their high-end graphics cards on eBay probably weren't HODL'ers (Bitcoin-speak for long-term holders). Still, their loss is your gain; good way to capitalize.

Good video, but I have some problems with the "big picture". Video games? Yes, I get that you have a 13 y/o son, but you smartly endorse NO tv, but are video games any better? I think not. How many acts of violence does a developing brain need to see? My only video game is chess online, with people around the world. How do you rationalize video games as a Mustachian? I built my first computer with a donated 486 mother board, just after Pentiums came out. After successful proof of concept, I built up a Pentium model from computer swap meet new parts for cheap. Now a days I tear them apart and sell the parts on ebay or recycle for gold, copper, Aluminum, SS, brass, etc.

Some of the best video games I've enjoyed seeing him play (and sometimes joining myself) include Kerbal Space Program, Space Engine, Cities Skylines, Roblox, and on the VR side we both love Beat Saber. But the computer works hardest when it's editing video (Adobe Premier Elements, and although computationally less intensive, the coolest thing a computer can do is create music (Ableton Live).

Karl you are misguided. Computers and video games are wonderful and enriching to any young mans life. Karl, you disgust me.
