Follow along from conception to completion - including some revisions along the way - as we prepare for our Vermont Castings Defiant wood stove. We used granite countertop scraps, salvaged lumber, and creative noncombustible spacers to comply with the specifications for our stove while operating in a budget and getting a high-end looking product in the end. Who says DIY, and budget building means making sacrifices? #homestead #woodstove #vermontcastings #vermontcastingsdefiant #granite #countertopscraps #diyhearth #norcaloffgrid #cabinbuild

looks great! Is there a particular type of mortar that you need with a hearth? I am in the process of making a hearth for camp and was wondering if I could use the ready mix motor or do I have to get some special kind?
@offgridrising
@offgridrising 4 месяца назад
I agonized over this question! Just regular mortar is fine, as long as your stove has adequate heat shields. If you’re in doubt about that, you might want to go with a high heat mortar.

I agree. Wise move to re-enforce the base... always trust your instincts. Personally The base seems to be a little busy. It would have looked better all dark. All in all, good job.
@offgridrising
@offgridrising Год назад
Thanks! The reason for the color choices was that I had a limited quantity of both. I used every last dark stone that I had.

@@offgridrising I agree with you. Use what you have... and I think - thanks to your talent - it looks great!!. I'd love to do the same when my new Blaze King arrives in 4-5 months but it looks to be a lot of work.

Great job all around ! You mentioned that you are doing this legal, did they allow 1 sheet of 1/2 inch dura rock and your rocks ? A sincere question.

Thanks! I went by the clearance requirements in the owner’s manual for the stove, which broadly describes “non combustible” materials. I interpret that to be cement board + stones.

What did you do to reinforce the floor system under all of this? Double the joists?
@offgridrising
@offgridrising 8 месяцев назад
Happily it runs directly over a girder so it was pretty simple to support by adding a pier right under the middle.

@offgridrising

Thank you! Just regular thin set. Then I topped it off with grout.

The spacers that you mentioned, they go behind the cement board correct???
@offgridrising
@offgridrising Год назад
Yes, between the cement board and the Sheetrock. Make sure you place them over studs!

Nice work. If i may ask what are thoughts on your wood stove particularly the griddle?
@offgridrising
@offgridrising 2 года назад
I like the look of it! We haven’t used it yet because of course the weather warmed as soon as it showed up!
@offgridrising
@offgridrising 9 месяцев назад
Update: The griddle works fine as long as the fire is basically coals. Invest in or rig up a splatter guard so you don’t have to repaint the bottom section of stove pipe. Don’t ask how I know hahaha. Generally we don’t cook directly on the griddle, but we put a cast iron pan on top of it.
