How To Build a Rat Breeding Rack

A step by step of how I built my rat breeding rack, for feeding my ball pythons. Relatively cheap, and easy to build. 6ft tall, with 6 cement tubs. Price breakdown near the end of the video. Shout out to 46and2Reptiles, for his great RU-vid videos, that got me into building this rack, and breeding my own feeders.

Rack dimensions:
Frames - 29.5" x 21.25"-as built in video. I recommend building them smaller.
Recommended Frame Size - 27.5" x 21"-I recommend building this size, which is a little smaller than what I built in this video
Runners tubs slide on - Using recommended 27.5" x 21" frames, the runners would be 23.5".
Rack height - 70" - This depends on the distance between the frames, how many frames, and how close you want the bottom frame to the ground. I used 6 frames, with 10" between frames, and the bottom frame is 11" from the ground. Distance between frames is personal preference. I used 10" to allow the tubs to slide out, without hitting the water bottles I was using at the time. Now that I'm using an gravity fed water system, 10" is overkill, but I'm still happy with it.

Thanks for the video! I went and built one based on 2 pictures I found on google & my rack came out super ugly and wobbly mainly because I didn’t use a drill bit to pre drill holes & I didn’t use a corner clamp either. Now I know!

I just built this after watching this video (by the way I subscribe to you) I followed the other video as well that you made. Both videos was very informational on how to build it. I have it 70in tall with 7 tubs for my rat breeding. Thank you for showing us how's it's built. If anyone want pictures of my rat rack I can send pictures through email. I built it just like this video but somethings a lil different and a lil better for me. Again thank you for having this detail rat rack on RU-vid 🤑🤑

Hey, I love the video and greatly appreciate your attention to detail, so thank you. I was able to find the exact tubs at Lowe’s and was going to attempt this build, but first I wanted to check in with you and see how well the rack has been preforming over the past year and a half. Also, if you wouldn’t mind shooting me your “preferred” dimensions and any helpful tips you might have if you did this all over again. Thank you again for your time and help.

You can always make an auto water system with a bucket and tubing using the gravity method. Just a 5 Gal bucket, tubing, and they sell the nozzles for feeder mice/rats anyways for like $2 each.

Love the clean look. Have you had any problems with the rats/mice chewing the plastic, wood or wire? If so have they ever gotten out? Also, how long would one of these racks last considering its unfinished wood.

+jonathan kidd Had 1 rat chew at the cross piece of the frame, but she's gone now. Other than that, no chewing or damage to anything. If I caught a rat chewing, I would cull it. The rack is indoors, and doesn't get wet. I would imagine it would last a LONG time, possibly forever...

The Royal Ball Shack is there a particular reason that the runners that the tubs slide on is shorter than the frame? I am also interested in the gravity fed waterer and was wondering if this is why you chose to shorten them.

XxPowerSurgeXx Yep. That's the exact reason. I say it somewhere in the video. With the frames sticking out 4" past the runners, you can easily remove and replace the tubs, without removing the water nipples.

Charity Mullins The leg length on this specific rack is 70". To shorten the rack, you could put the frames closer together, and/or have the bottom tub closer to the ground.

How many tubs do you suggest if i'm feeding under 10 bp's?

+Eivy Cain Depends on the line of rats, and if you feed f/t or live. I have 7 BPs, a good line of rats, and feed f/t. With 2 male rats, and 8 females, I produce plenty for 7 BPs. If you feed live, you'll need more females, so you always have the sizes you need. I also switched to using maternity tubs for the rats. I'll do an update video soon.

I'm a full time Stationary Engineer. I make enough money for my wife to be a stay at home, and my family to have an awesome life. Before you write comments that make you sound uneducated, maybe you should do a little research. These are big tubs. Most feeder breeders keep a lot more than 4 rats in these tubs. Thanks for your comment.
