There is nothing wrong with the block that was used. It was not installed correctly. Period. Some of the reasons you gave for it failing are pure BS. Water filling up the cavity and freezing? Are you serious? Any "pinned" wall that is installed in this manner is going to fail as well. Been installing walls and planters made out of this type of block for 15 years.

I see your point but there were several failures here that lead to this collapse. Most importantly, non-existant drainage material, poor compaction. Gravity should keep these blocks in place if the soil behind was stable. stone walls without back lips stand for hundreds of years through freeze/thaw cycles if correct compaction and drainage are present.
@chrisryan3770
@chrisryan3770 8 лет назад
Here in the UK retaining walls would be mortared with drain pipes through the bottom blocks at intervals to drain water. The old way of doing it was called Dry Stone Dyking where each stone is picked to interlock with each other. Some dry Stone walls have survived for hundreds even thousands of years.

Hollow blocks are lighter, that is the only problem, they don't trap water. Nothing wrong with the lip system. The truth is, the right wall uses friction to keep the blocks from moving, not the lip and not the pins. Talk to an engineer if you don't think so
@jamesjenkins9968
@jamesjenkins9968 8 лет назад
You are exactly right the pins and lip is for alignment and some strength. hollow block are good for filling with 57 or 67 stone and that will lock them together.
@Dirtmonkey
@Dirtmonkey 8 лет назад
These are hollow with a solid top. Not possible to core fill this style block.
@maxdecphoenix
@maxdecphoenix 7 лет назад
take a pan with enough water to cover the bottom entirely, invert a glass jar and place it on the tray. Put it in the freezer. Come back the next morning to an exploded jar. Water WILL infiltrate under the blocks, it will be trapped there, and, if it freezes it will likely crack the block.
@nicknoland9704
@nicknoland9704 6 лет назад
The blocks are lighter, that's the only problem! HAHAHA... My word lol... The install failed. Improper base, no drainage aggregate, etc... Maybe not the best design but the block are fine, water is not an issue, bad install. Period
@markwilson9329
@markwilson9329 6 лет назад
Wow. No understanding of simple physics. There is no way these blocks can hold water. A properly installed retaining wall will work as designed. We have installed more than 30 walls with this style wall. When installed correctly these walls will last forever. Base. Aggregate. Drain. Very simple.

There's nothing wrong with the blocks that were used per se. The problem is they are not intended for a wall of that height. Misapplication of the product does not mean the product is bad. Those blocks are meant for a wall no greater than 2 feet high. I have a hard time believing that wall was built by a contractor. It looks like a DIY job to me.
@Dirtmonkey
@Dirtmonkey 8 лет назад
+Jay Slabotsky I have no clue who built it. Fact is I have built walls over 20 feet tall with that block. It cane done with engineering etc. I prefer solid pinned blocks any day personally.

This guy is a show off. No need for mechanical connection. The issue is not the lip nor the hollow space, it's impoper installation.
@itsmorowind
@itsmorowind 8 лет назад
Honestly there is nothing wrong with that style of block. Improper installation is the problem here. 1.The base blocks weren't set properly. Who knows if they even put any base rock under that wall. I don't even think they used a level.. 2. There is no drainage system in place behind the wall. No drain rock? No proper grading behind the wall to divert the water? 3. No geogrid system in place? Honestly, this looks like a homeowner, built wall. In my opinion, the style of block has nothing to do with the failure of this wall.

Great video! I would love to see one where you explain water movement with drainage aggregate. I don't completely understand it myself. In my mind, i see the water soaking down through the aggregate, to the base, but where does it go after that? Does it just sit there until it soaks into the soil under the whatever was used as a base (sand, class 5, etc.)? If it just sits there, won't it freeze in winter? I see large walls around here, both with and without drain pipes coming out of them. Help?

That wall failed due to several installation rules not being utilized! No drainage being the most prominent! It doesn't appear to have had a proper base either, Notice how the water drainage was left to all head towards the wall. It probably should have had some Geotextile grid also! That wall is a great example of a poor installation nothing more and I would be embarrassed to use it as an example to downgrade a competitors product. I could build a wall out of that pin system block and we have used pin systems and I could build it to fail also! Were not koolaid drinkers!

The wall didn't "fail" it simply got pushed over. Had nothing to do with the blocks themselves. Your wall with "pins" will also get pushed over. Any straight vertical wall will. It needs support horizontally into the retained area so that the weight of the backfill helps to keep the wall from being pushed over.
@itspossible3390
@itspossible3390 6 лет назад
It's more like water got behind the wall and froze, then slowly tipped it over with each freeze.... so you don't let the soil get right up on it, you need a gravel layer.

Stanley, I have a contractor offering to build me a solid wall using Rip Rock (Class One) and mortar with 6” to 8” of 3/4” stone on the backside of the wall for drainage, and of course drainage pipe at the base and every 10’ on the front side of the wall. What do you think about this solid wall option vs the segmental block option in a lot of your videos? I ask because none on the contractors in my area are offering the “pinned” block option (only the lip), so it is solid wall vs lip blocks (correct drainage on each though). Would appreciate your advise.

@FirstLast-ej1my
@FirstLast-ej1my 8 лет назад
So a professional is someone who has perfect grammar and/or spelling? I don't understand the logic there. The Egyptian masons were great builders but most of them undereducated but yet in my opinion deserve the title of professional that surpasses today's engineering in masonry.
@nancyrountree6556
@nancyrountree6556 8 лет назад
+First Last.....I never refuted the builders quality... However, they often refer on how to maintain a image of professionalism. I'm simply indicating for them to present such an image, they may wish to correct their spelling. As a consumer, I am reluctant to hire people that cannot be bothered to create a professional image with accurate spelling. Unlike Egyptian masons, we do have a plethora of spelling assistance, i.e. predictive text, spell-check and etc. Therefore, there is no excuse for shoddy grammar which can be construed as ignorance or laziness. Not an image I believe this company is looking for. Perhaps you believe that everyone on the internet is trolling. Not so, some of us just believe that the information being disseminated should be accurate.

The comments below should 'cement' what you were explaining. It all boils down to drainage and the movement of water over the retaining wall. Yes, most contractors used the cheapest stone. I would prefer a dry wall, Pennsylvania blue stone starting with a marble base in my wildest fantasy but alas I am stuck replacing 5 retaining walls on my property. So cheap is the way to go. I have one wall that will need an engineering team brought in as it is between 12-14' height and right beside the house. The wall is now bulging out at the middle. I see where the prior owner of the house put in drainage pipe all over but the piping has now drifted to 45 degree angles toward the house. Yes, the things nightmares are made out of. Waiting for a sink hole collapse and pray every night it will wait until spring.

I just had one of these walls fail. And the blocks weren't hollow. It has more to do with your other points. The contractor didn't put enough crushed stone behind the wall, built it past the 3' mark specified by the manufacturer, and didn't install geo-grid/geo-textile, compacting with a plate compactor in lifts. The failure was at the bottom of a slope where the runoff from the home's roof ran down that slope's base and built hydrostatic pressure. It's been tilting over time from freeze-thaw cycle as well. Absolute nightmare as the wall failed onto a sidewalk and street. Under pressure with the town to fix ASAP and money is not there.

What do you think about the wet dirt behind the wall freezing and pushing. Then thawing settling net Year repeat push a little bit every year.

Had they used adhesive and drainage, that wall would have been perfectly fine. Your system does NOT make this lip system better. Like everything else, installation technique is key.

i have built many stone walls from heavy cut stone,usually sandstone foundations salvaged from old barns and houses.no matter the type of block used i see where this wall needed 57 limestone compacted and at least 6 inches thick and twice as wide at the bottom stone(a stone footer) i also lean my walls back a bit toward the backfill side of course.install pvc perforated pipe behind the wall with holes down to drain the water out.backfill with granular fill and cap off with top soil or even a layer of clay then topsoil.use a geotextile to keep the gran.fill from leaking through the wall.best luck to all

There are thousands of retaining walls in Japan and they are some time straght up ascending or sloped with lots of morter around the bricks. I don't recall gravely bases but drainage was always apparent.

you want to separate from others? follow code...in many states you can't even build a retainer more than 3' in height without a civil engineers site inspection and approval plus site recommendations!
@Dirtmonkey

+Bellis Lawn & Gardens Thats a good point but also a sad reflection of the state some contractors work under. Following code should just be status quo-but a job like this one shows that it isn't.

Brick wall on a concrete foundation is the only way to go these modern walls all move in time the lines never stay straight, cheap and nasty.

75+mph wind pushing against my vinyl fence that literally against the back of these blocks that’s filled with concrete inside. Rain, snow, skid steer trekking close on the higher grade side of these blocks and my blocks haven’t moved. I must be doing something wrong. Also, your suckers aren’t leveled.
@marcmercado2085

Concrete inside the fence post so it’s got something heavier pushing against it than just a hollow post.

Wow, hollow blocks whats next ones made out of Styrofoam. Those blocks might be "ok" on a really short retaining wall like 3/4 courses with glue. Those bocks are more for decoration than an engineered landscaping solution they are for garden beds not a real retaining wall that's my opinion on them. Reality is though is your spending a bunch of money buy good quality materials.
@Dirtmonkey

+DarkRaptor99 You actually described those blocks well. I don't use them for anything unless specifically requested.
@jamesjenkins9968
@jamesjenkins9968 8 лет назад
Yall are way wrong no engineer is going with a solid block. They want hollow and it be filled with 57 or 67 stone for drainage and strength. The walls yall are describing are free standing. The pin system and lip system are for mostly alignment and some strength.

It's all about the execution - smaller blocks can be man-handled so anyone can stack them up. You want to make sure you vet your installer and get someone qualified. Thing with the PMB (large, wet cast blocks) is you have to have some serious equipment to install those...which filters out a lot of the hacks. Don't get me wrong, I've seen some bad PMB installs too...to the point where the installer should be prosecuted for what he did to 3 people in the same development. When in doubt, ask your supplier for referrals - they're not going to recommend someone who stains their reputation.

Will homeowners insurance pay for the wall?

A bit of weight from someone Ride-on against that wall added to the problem. I got pulled up by a client for using the ride-on right to the edge of their narrow sandstone retaining wall. I politely said if it's was done properly it shouldn't be a problem, but I shall use the mower in that section in future.
@Dirtmonkey
@Dirtmonkey 9 лет назад
+Trooperandcooper Ale For the record no equipment is supposed to be driven within three feet from the back of a retaining wall per geotechnical specs. I once had a fence company drive a skid steer about a foot behind one of our walls and blow it out.
@trooperandcooperale3057
@trooperandcooperale3057 9 лет назад
omg I shall change my ways indeed. I do not need the cost of a wall blowout. Wall blowout means Wallet blowout. My ride-on is under 400 kilos = 880 pounds. Is that enough weight to cause an issue?, cause they have to hold back water? But it wont kill me to mow a boarder.

I like to use drain tile on a wall of larger size. I think I read all the comments, one thing I didn't see anyone mention. I see tire tracks from a lawn mower in the area behind the wall. Driving a 500-800# machine behind it regularly won't help it last either.

Well I am an engineer also..Civil BTW. All the points he raised are valid for the layman. But I gather you graduated from an American University..it's a pity. The number of structural failures in the U.S.A. is ludicrous. Gives you some idea at what level of "education" your universities teach. Anyway, before you criticize, could you please let me know precisely what "misinformation" you are referring to? I would be more than happy to review your findings/comments and provide the proper technical feedback. Regards

Nice tutorial, clear and to the point. One thing you might want to fix may seem nit-picky, but I think it may have a negative impact, right when you don't want it to. At 7:02 your onscreen captioning reads; Compliment your competition! and, It makes you look proffesional! ...Even typing that here in comments is getting red-underlined by auto-spellchecker. I freakin' know you're a professional - but you gotta spell that word right. If you freeze the frame at 7:02, it's actually kinda funny. Cheers.
