Brought to you by a Journeyman Carpenter, I pack this video full of all the info and math you need to build a set of deck stairs OR a simple set of interior house stairs. I teach you all the elements to be aware of when adding different tread material and riser material so you are prepared for any situation. I throw some tricks on how to deal with uneven ground. Or at least check out the best and simplest jig to use on a 24" square, it has saved me countless hours.

Just stumbled back upon this video… I’ve been in business for four years now, but back then, THIS was the video that taught me stair math and how to cut stringers. I referred to it a couple times while doing my first set of stairs, and been off to the races ever since. Good stuff dawg, thanks!

Great video! I did my steps the same way, I didn't want to just toe on the stringers, so i inserted a ledger in between the two outside stringers, and it was self explanatory to trim the center stringer the thickness of the ledger and nail into place. i never knew it was called a ledger, I just wanted a board there so I had something I could screw and lag securely to the face of my deck landing off of my garage.Thanks!!

Thanks for the help. Put a new shed is a while ago but needs stairs. Did you put the timber straight on the ground/with insulating material? My stairs lead down to a sloping lawn - so I figure I need to put posts in for them. Plus it gets really humid here in NZ - so direct on ground=rotting out(even H4) in 4-5 years.

Enjoyed the informative video. I'm in the process of building new stairs from my lawn to my covered terrace. In your installation, did you just rest the risers on the ground or did you have some kind of base to rest/secure the risers on? It looks like the risers are just resting on the ground. I'm trying to figure out how to do this in my case. The stairs that were initially installed 14 years ago were just installed on the ground and they're now completely rotted. Appreciate your input. TEX.
@uptokode
@uptokode 3 года назад
This set was placed on the ground. On big stairs (wide and tall) I would consider a 2 concrete pilings for it to sit on. Maybe a strip footing across the piles but you need a void form under the slab to stop frost from smashing it apart.

I don’t have any footage I can throw up quickly for you. That base holder is just a 2x4 notched into the very bottom of the stairs to hold them straight and true. If landing on a patio or something solid you could do without it but I think it’s still good practice.

@vitodifonte8761
@vitodifonte8761 5 лет назад
Hey kode....at approx. 4.30 of the video, you mention you typically use a 10" run. I've been contracting for 20yrs, and although this is generally true, I like to use a simple trick that an old carpenter once gave me. In order to have a comfortable incline in your staircase, use this formula: twice the rise + once the run, = between 24 and 26. So...let's say you use a 7.5" rise.... well 2x that (15) + 10= 25.... you have a comfortable incline. This comes especially handy when you're building elongated steps or an extra long span with short rises. Let me know what you think!
@joekind1
@joekind1 4 года назад
You are correct, last year I tried to explain that formula to a professional contractor who has many RU-vid videos. He thinks it's 2 times the tread, plus the rise equals 27.
@nicolewebb558
@nicolewebb558 2 года назад
Can you explain thst in detail cause I'm building steps for my deck
@vitodifonte8761
@vitodifonte8761 2 года назад
@@nicolewebb558 hey Nicole... once you've determined your total height of your staircase (from the ground, to the deck floor) , you need to figure out how many steps you will need to climb. So, let's say your total height is 60". At a comfortable 7.5" rise, you'll have 8 rises and then get to your deck landing. So, twice the rise (of 7.5") is 15, your step can be either 9,10 or 11" for it to be a comfortable climb (to total between 24 and 26"). If you wish to a longer staircase, with more steps and shorter rises, you can use a 6" rise, with a 13" step for it to be comfortable. 6x2=12 + 13= 25. I hope this helped.... good luck
@nicolewebb558
@nicolewebb558 2 года назад
@@vitodifonte8761 the deck steps I see 5 so I was going to buy a pre cut one to 5 same as is but i don't think the rise on this one will match the one I buy cause the one I saw online it has a rise of 6 1/2
@vitodifonte8761
@vitodifonte8761 2 года назад
@@nicolewebb558 the precut stringers are practical, but will rarely fit perfectly to your deck. You'll often have the last step either to short or high compared to the rest...this leads to a high risk of tripping up the stairs. It's your call in the end.... but I would strongly suggest you give it a go at your own stringers

Check your local building codes before building a flight of stairs. The required dimensions vary depending on locality.

How do you work out how thick and how wide the material is to use for your stringer ?

I was wondering what product you put on the bare ground during your deck stair build?

This is exactly the video I needed for my project. The jig tip is super. At this point I have a question about the product you used under/at the front of the stringers. it appears to be secured with large spikes. Thanks in advance.

Search “rubber edging” Menards has best pricing, Lowes has it in stock often, Home Depot you can order it in packs of six. There are lots of offbrands that you can get cheaper online. They’re heavy so shipping may be a pain. I fell in love with these thinking they would be wonderful and bought a couple hundred dollars worth at Menards last year... Here’s what I learned: They do make wider versions and you can search them online (typically from China🙄) and that ‘would’ve’ been ideal... the ‘mow-over’ edge is TOO shallow and I can’t get close enough to it with the mower deck... to actually NOT have to edge/trim afterwards 😖 ...find these with a wider BOTTOM/GROUND contact side & your golden🙌🏼 After settling 1season, they sit so low in your grass & they loose effectiveness...In order to get them securely in the dirt they can’t be on ANYthing loose*BUY LONGER SPIKES* which means you have less height room for mulch😕 I’m trying gravel this year- but will be searching for a WIDER version; since the object was to eliminate weed eating/edging!

I recommend running block along the front and sides your stairs so that you don’t have to edge/mow up to it and potentially beat up you’re finished material. I was lucky enough to get my hands on a long piece of sandstone & sunk it in the ground in front of my bottom step- and it only sticks up a cpl inches where I can’t catch it with the mower deck👌🏼 Oh, and something cool abt the rubber edging- u ‘can’ saw it at any angle, it has SOME curve/bend ability, and u can drill a new hole to put a spike where needed...but don’t try to cut the rubber w/any power saw lol it’ll ruin ur blade & smell awful

Should you put a sealer coat on the wood before you put all the treads on?

Does the stringer just set on or in the dirt ? It looks like there is a footing of some sort.

What is the thickness of the riser boards and the width ? I don’t want to use the tread board that are 1’’ for the risers and 5.50 wide . Thanks
