I felt like I had a good understanding of building a deck but I found this series while looking for tips since its been a couple decades since my last deck build. Ive got to say this series about deck building is the most informative and detailed video series out there for building a deck start to finish. All the small tips and things to consider along the build really helped my project. Even though I think I know how to build a deck, I feel like I learned a lot and want to say thank you for such a great job in this series.

This is honestly the best and most straight forward video on making stair stringers I've ever seen. Building my own steps always scared me on projects and I usually just bought the pre-cut ones from the box stores when available, but recently had a project that required taller steps and different sized than the pre-made ones. I literally just drew up and cut my first 6 stringers in probably 1 hr or less, saved a ton of money on doing it myself (precuts are insanely expensive..) and was so easy I would never think of doing it another way again. You've literally taught me a lifelong skill in less than a hour, and I thank you a million times over for sharing your knowledge with all of us.

What I like about your videos is the fact you show how you work around issues that come up. I know that every project has some snafus, but you are the only one who shows what can go wrong and how your work around them. That’s as valuable for me as the video itself. It keeps me thinking not only about the next step but also some of the pitfalls. Thanks for “Keeping It Real”

If I were you' when I put that cleet a crossed the back of the upper stringers to where you cut the middle stringer an inch & a half shorter than the two ends so to accommodate the cleat thickness is 1'st I would have instead notched them for the cleat to fit under the bottom of all the stringers on the wall & would have first fastened them with a screw to the cleat. Likewise I'd of placed a bottom cleat the same sort of way only notched under the front foot of it's risers of them at the ground level & with concrete nails or wood which ever it requires to hold it in tact so to avoid it collapsing say if so maybe your moving heavy equipment such be a refrigerator or something else very heavy. In any case' I would not trust just those little screws, but if so the cleat is wedged tight under the notched toes of the stringers it won't be able to push out & or slip down as the cleat is secured on the wall w/either lag screws or concrete anchors so be it better safe than sorry! Also if it be on dirt, you can drill holes through the cleat & hammer steaks or rebar through them as once you cover the bottom step w/a board over the rebar, your hazard of tripping over it will be gone. I am a good man to have on hand, Dave the handyman!

loved this series!! Any recommendations for a deck contractor in Philadelphia area? I have a large deck that has been up for 20 years. Pressure treated wood that my husband stains every 2-3 years. I noticed on of the bolts slightly pulling from the home. Since it has been 20 year, should we tear it down and rebuild? My deck is on the second floor off my living area. it is 15x16.

Since the stairs are open, I think it would be a good idea to cut the centre stringer back slightly, (perhaps 1.5 inches) so that people won't stub their toes while climbing. Giving a little room for big-footed guys to place their feet without bumping the centre stringer will make climbing more comfortable, as well as safer. And I don't think the structure will be weakened much by doing the cutback. I have done that to two open stairs, and I feel much safer while climbing with my size 12 shoes! Any thoughts on that?
@mrshoeguy2477
@mrshoeguy2477 6 лет назад
I think the solution is to cut 1" off the back end of the tops of the stringers so the treads would remain where they are but the stringers could be pushed back 1" which would create a nosing on all of the steps.

Can you tell me what I am missing? Decking boards are 51/2 inches and two of them is 11 inches plus a gap of a about an eighth inch but the run on your stringers is 10 inches . that gives at least an inch plus of overhang , which would be pretty much a trip hazard. but it doesn’t look that way in the video , The overhang looks more like a half an inch. So there’s something I’m not understanding.

I'm the guy that gets fired for being a perfectionist, but I'm the banker and the boss of my own job, so I drove to 2 different Lowes and 1 Home Depot to get away from knots in my treads. Like this guy said, "some are worse than others" , and I wanted knots less than an inch or so. Stringers like his wouldn't get built due to those Diagonal Knots in the crotch of the run and rise area. Subtracting the knot his stringers were about an inch thick, right at the crotch, along their length. FIRE ME..., I'm a perfectionist ! I did a repair under our house in Nashville where a Knot was all the way through, midway, along the keel beam. The doors and floor were out of level due to shit wood being used at the worst place. My stringers are 8 feet long....

Here in Australia treated (CCA) timber is not recommended for handrails because of the toxic nature of the chemicals used - copper, chrome and arsenic. In reality most people use it for handrails. I guess the fear is there is a possibility of poisoning if you don't wash your hands correctly and handle food after touching it, though you'd probably have to ingest a lot of CCA past on from skin contact to do that.

@ - you attached a structural component (stairs) to a non-structural component (skirting). In your skirting video you didn't mention any consideration for stair support and the bottom skirt rail didn't appear to be fastened to the concrete. Did you do anything to support the skirting so it won't move with stair use? I suspect the stairs at least could move with use as well as the possibility of a skirting wall failure under live load.

When setting brackets into concrete like that, i usually drill one hole first and set the first anchor. Then drill out the remaining holes with through the bracket holes. The bracket will help keep your bit from drifting. Then pound the anchors in with the bracket sitting in place.

31:30 Just a math question here: If you butted (2) 2x6's on each step, they should effectively yield 11" of tread depth. And you cut the runs to 10" if I recall from earlier in the video. So that leaves at least 1 inch of nosing, right? But I saw no nosing on the (presumably finished) steps shown in the intro. Magic!

All in all, job well done!! My only criticism is you didn’t orient the treads "bark side up", i.e., the growth rings crowned up. This will prevent the treads from cupping from exposure the moisture and sun. As it weathers and dries out, the materials will crown up providing drainage and deterioration from pooling water, thus extending its life.. Should also follow this tip for the decking, cap rails , and handrails.
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 2 года назад
Actually I follow the Bark side down rule when using wet PT lumber. Kilned dried lumber seems to like Bark side up but that is not used much on decks anymore. There are many articles going back and forth either way but bark down this is what I find has worked out best for wet PT lumber . Sometimes I break that rule depending on the boards surface conditions as well, ....so really do what you like I guess? LOL! Thanks for the comment though.

@Liam1H
@Liam1H 2 года назад
Good solid information presented quickly and clearly. The only thing I'd highly recommend if you are going to be trying for code approval, is you really need to address the requirements for openings like the ones formed between the risers. In our area, that space can not be big enough to put a 4" sphere through it. Apparently, the four inch sphere is a stand in for a young child's head. Another way to deal with that space problem is to figure in a kick plate for every riser to block it off.
@HouseImprovements

True enough , around here they dont pay much attention to that on short stairs.

Hey Shannon. Couple of things. First, what kind of saw blade did you use? Just a rough cut blade? Second, we are moving to a new house and I need to change out the deck stairs because they're too step, and I need to make a wider tread. I am assuming the math is still the same? Just bought some merchandise from your website!

You should have joined the bottoms of the risers with a 2x4 on the bottom. I always tape the bottoms of the boards. PT material a concrete don't mix well. I would have put 4 risers, not 3. Over time as the boards dry out they will start getting saggy. You should tape the tops of the stringers since that is a place where water can sit. Remember that is an open and unsealed cut. Anything that makes the life of the deck extend is good. I use Zip Tape since it is some of the best out there.

Great video..., but...I would put some metal braces under , where stringer go against concrete, at the bottom, so they don't stay wet all the time, and rotten sooner. That way stringers stay off the concrete a bit, don't you agree??? youtheman =)

Steps in a house or especially using Pressure Treated, should always be 2x12 when cutting out stringers. 2x10 does not pass minimum code and even if it did, you should always be striving to go above code. Step rise should never pass 7-1/4", 7-1/2 at most

so, why not pull the tread back off at the bottom to get better access to the post base? did I miss something?

Stairs would be much stronger if you router the sides of the stringer and slot the treads into the stringer, glue them in and screw through the back of the stringer into the end of the tread. Very strong and will last a lifetime. Sadly your stairs will be lucky to get 5 years before they break. Your turning a 2x10 into a 2x4 with that massive cut. Tut tut tut smh

If you have at least 3-1/2" left of the stringers that is uncut you are fine.

Great work 👍. I’m building a deck with 14 ft joists. Am I okay to use 2x8s?

In most places Max span for 2x8s that are 16" apart is 12' and max cantilever for them is 16" so the answer would be no. I would either go to 2x10s or use the 2x8s 12" apart instead

Great series on, "How to build a deck". I built my whole deck watching your videos.They were all easy enough to follow and understand. my deck was 20ft along back of house and 15 ft out. 8 ft stepped in at 10 ft. First time building anything like this ,so your videos helped me build a beautiful deck, thank you.
