How to build a sulky for any walk-behind mower

In this video I explain how I built my sulky for around $50 and how to do so on your own.
If you are planning on building one of these yourself, there are a few things I would strongly recommend you include in your design. I would definitely include the front lip that goes over your toes as this protects your feet at all times and also allows you to pull the sulky up with your feet if there is an obstacle in the way. As I said in the video, I think its also important to design the sulky so that it can rotate all the way around, making it easy to back up the mower and stow the sulky up and out of the way of the controls.
I have been using this sulky for almost 2 seasons now and it has held up great!
Please feel free to ask any questions in the comment section down below as I would be more than happy to answer them!

Fantastic!! I just bought one of these 48 inch Ransome Bobcat mowers and I am restoring it over the winter. I am also building a sulky. The prices on these things are through the roof.

My mower is like 25 + years old. they last a long time, well worth the investment!

Thanks. I just picked up a Gravely Pro 50 walk behind for $450 and almost threw up at the cost to buy a sulky

Sulkys are ridiculous!! I listed my Bobcat for $200 because I have so many projects that I was not able to get to it over the winter. I replaced the blown Kawasaki 14.5hp engine and replaced it with a rebuilt Briggs 14.5hp engine. The original motor was pull start and the walk behind had no lights. I made sure that the briggs has an electric start as well as a stator plate. I may have to replace the drive pulleys on the wheels because they are rusted away. I read that Devcon plastic steel works well for pulleys. Also I a, going to mount led lights in the front and one in the back for night mowing and safety . I see other Ransome 48's going for $1200 or $1800. What do you think I should ask? thanks

Unless I can find one used I'm gonna build it. Just got a John Deere 7g18 48 belt drive walk behind for a trade on an old rotten camper with potential. It was that or he had an older scag 52 hydro drive with 12hp Kawasaki. Apparently hydro is preferred from what I read. The john Deere was newer and looked a little better shape. Think I made the right choice prob until I use a hydro drive for first time. Oh well I'll just be using for our property and maybe some side jobs.

You could but swivel wheels may get expensive for it though

So, do you find you mow faster when you are the sulkie? short of fatigue any time savings?
@everythingmechanical4638

Definitely! Especially if you are mowing all day, it really saves your legs and energy

How fast can you mow? I'm walking in 4th gear. Can you get into 5th?
@everythingmechanical4638
@everythingmechanical4638 Год назад
@@ryanmichalak4596 I’m assuming yours has a peerless transmission, my bobcat has a cvt style speed control so not as fast but yes can mow full speed with it. I would mow with scags and exmarks that had a peerless and a sulky and you could mow in 5th if you wanted. The only thing is it can be a little too fast for mowing at times and the sulky can get a little wobbly

@Everything Mechanical good to know! I'm gonna try to build one and see how it goes!
