Hi, today we're going to be talking about how to build a tie wardrobe.
I'm Leah from Rampley and Co, and today I'm joined by fashion consultant Chris Modoo. Hiya. Hi Chris. So Chris where do you start?
Good question, I mean we're talking earlier about how many ties do you have. I've got a collection, I've been the menswear trade quite a long time, I've probably got around a hundred, and then where would you start, if you had to start again or someone's looking to start their collection? But I think in the modern world you could probably survive and get a good and cover most eventualities with probably five or six well-chosen good quality ties. And what do you think about the tie here today?
This would be often my first one if the first time you need to wear a quality ties perhaps to a wedding, and this is a great option, woven silk combination of a silver and midnight blue, looks great with a white shirt and a navy suit, ideal for job interviews, presentations, weddings other formal occasions, so I always I'd always suggest this is a really strong starting point.
Another really useful tie to have particularly if you need to wear them in a business smart environment, would be a printed suit with a discreet pattern. This type of tie looks great with white shirts, blue shirts, navy, charcoal, good conservative business dress. And would you ever go for a bold colour to start with? You could, but to start off with I think this sort of slightly muted dark red is good, same for sort of darker blues, darker oranges, sometimes can work but while you're wearing, while you've only got a few ties you want to be less memorable, if you've got a really bright time you wear it say twice a week people remember it, so while you're building your wardrobe stick to darker colors more muted shades.
A knitted tie, is a great tie to have in your collection it goes with so many different outfits um you can wear for business dress, you can wear it formally, you can wear it less formally, you can wear it with a sports jacket, you can wear a blazer, they go with a multitude of textures and colours, so I'd always recommend while starting out your tie wardrobe to include a solid knitted tie. Is navy the only colour you'd go for in a knitted tie? No, other colours are also good, I personally love navy because it goes with charcoal, you can wear with other blues, you can wear it with Tweeds, but other colours to consider are black. Black can be quite a statement, quite a fashion look and also some you can also get in this material some really lovely graphitey greys, which go really well with blues and greens. Plus this material doesn't crease. And it doesn't crease, and you were saying that earlier, the great thing when I travel I always take this time with me because you can roll it, and it just it always comes at the other end really fresh and it doesn't take up much packing space, so it's a good tie if you need to travel all the time.
Chris would you say that it's a good idea to have a striped tie in your collection. Definitely I love strip ties maybe introduce a little bit of colour and a different pattern. What I love about this one, although it's very conservative colours it's navy and cream, because it's got this beautiful Shantung texture, even when it's warm with a navy jacket it lifts itself up and gives a bit of contrast. Do the stripes always go in the same direction? No, British ties, regimental, schools, generally start as they are here, with higher left then going down, whereas American style ties were deliberately made in the opposite direction starting high on the right and then going down to the left.
This is a classic plain tie, always useful to have plain ties in your wardrobe, they can be combined with other patterns, they can be combined with other textures, this is a beautiful example of a plain tie, it's actually a wool worsted, so it's got a slightly different texture to silk ties, great for less formal things, so maybe more people with a tweed jacket maybe a blazer but doesn't mean it can't be worn with a with a plain business suit. I think once you've got this plain tie, you've got your foundation collection of ties, you can then build it in whichever way you feel suits your personality, you might decide that you love the wool ties, you wear a lot of Tweed, so you can expand those colours, or you might prefer something more dressy look of the wovens, but once you have this this good basic collection you can grow it as you enjoy it.
