I remember watching this when I was a kid in 2011 and being completely enthralled by the idea of creating one of these. I looked for months for an iron can but unfortunately never found one. Not that I had the tools or knowledge back then to make one anyway. Stumbling onto this video again literally a decade later at least made me smile, remembering a time when stuff like this was all that occupied my mind instead of tuition or finals. Though I’m a little late to this party, thank you for making this video.

Most cans were made out of 10 back in the 5060s and seventies it wasn't till the eighties and nineties when they switch to aluminum and if you're acting like this is new you are stupid and attached to your phone way too much

I never indicated that aluminum cans were a new thing. Not really sure what you hoped to accomplish with this comment but I hope you work through whatever it is you’re going through.

Steel cans Spray paint cans, hair spray cans, WD-40 Cans, brake fluid cans, they all have the dome that you need for boiler chamber, lots of steel cans around user your imagination. A mini butane torch with soldering flux or acid core solder will be enough heat to sweat the seams. Acid core solder is for plumbing, rosin core is for electrical soldering. You want acid core for this project. This is great project for an adult, as long as you have a 12 year old supervising 🤪 Good luck!
@redoverdrivetheunstoppable4637
i think it's the so called 50\50 solder (or 40\60 is better but not the opposite 60\40), there's more lead than the electronic one and it's more robust, but actually if you clean very well the areas you need to solder, scraping em with a sharp cutter to take away the zinc etc, i think is the best solution rather than sanding or filing and you don't need necessarily an aggressive flux.... and you still need a thin iron sheet, i didnt know they make iron soda cans etc, i thought they were all aluminium
@JustMusicAndStuff

im no expert but id be keen to make one with aluminium cans, high temp silicone instead of solder & copper pipes for easy cold bending rather than brass.. given that its a pretty soft burn it should be fine & rather than fabricating a burner, why not just use the shell from a tealight candle? if by some chance the aluminium boiler melts, just make one from tougher metal, youve already saved many hours of work ;) & if high temp silicone is not to your liking why not use exhaust putty, also known as liquid steel =)
@JustMusicAndStuff

@@redoverdrivetheunstoppable4637 i think only America, Russia & Korea still use ferrous metals in some drinking cans.. the rest of the world realised decades ago that the zinc or galvanising is very toxic but as always it come down to cost & profit vs consumer ignorance

MrPatnico And with aluminum cans? Could weld aluminum? I say this because in my country abound aluminum cans
@MrPatnico
@MrPatnico 9 лет назад
Neto Lope · The boiler is the only one problem because it should be resistant at more than 120 °C. Iron is easy to sold with plumbing solder. This soldering is heat resistant but not works with aluminium. Of course, boiler should be perfectly sealed. If you find only aluminium can, you can use epoxy glue with metal powder included. This glue is more heating resistant than others For the rest of the boat, aluminium is well.

Thank you for your instruction how to build a pop pop boat. It's great and reminded me when I was 10 years old.My friend had a similar boat like your and we took in the lake. We didn't know the boiler must fill with water first:) so the solder joint melted and the pipes collapsed when it was heated with a piece of candle.We didn't have solder gun to repair and that boat never run.Today I make a boiler and a burner, I test the boiler with blowing air in the pipe and the top is pop pop.Thanks.

Bonne construction. :o)

Thanks for this video, I want to try to make one of these myself and give it to my girlfriends nephews. They are of the "Ipad-kids-generation" and have alot of toys of poor quality. Thank you for your comment. Sometimes I also use a translator. I also like the done at home. Your Stirling engine is great! You are very smart and full of skills. There is no valve in an engine POPOP. This works because the water is expelled back and then sucked partly on the sides. So there is a slight resultant forward. On video, with each pulse, we see the boat back a bit before moving forward. The yield is much lower than that of a Stirling engine. Regards. Patrick.
