The full 1 hour and 10 minute version of how to build a utility trailer. The free set of plans for this trailer is on my website. redwingsteelworks.com
These type of guys are priceless. No amount of money could beat the quality of building it yourself. Well done. Great build. Trailer will outlive the truck most likely lol
There are very few people that would take the time to put out a video that shows so much detail. Thank you. You said it wasn't Hollywood quality. Well, it didn't have to be. You did any awesome job. Aces!
Hell of a tutorial my friend! Thank you for taking the time to show every step! Looks great! I am going to try and tackle my first trailer build and also my first welding challenge! I really appreciate your teaching
Very nice! I've been wanting to build a trailer, and now I know basically what's involved. When I get ready to start building, I'll probably need to come back a couple of times to get more details. Your trailer is every bit as good as one of those Lowe's trailers, and THEN some. In fact, your trailer is worth much more than a comparable "Corner Store" trailer. Thanks for the video.
thank you so very much for this video Matt. i am having a trailer built. and with your video i will be able to have an intelligent conversation with my builder. using all the correct names of parts. and construction.
great job you made it so easy that people who have never built something like this feel they can do it and the best part you dont have that tv show tude just a real down to earth guy thanks from wayne and nadine at the rat cave in jack fla.
great job... I'm building one for the same thing... the threaded rod for the hinge is actually better for some light duty applications... it allows lube to stay longer because of the ridges rather than a smooth surface that will allow it to just run off.... thanks for the video!!!
Thanks for taking the time to put out such a fantastic video. Very well filmed and explained. Also, thanks for the free plans. What a generous way of paying it forward!
I've fixed dozens of trailers that were bought from HOME DEPOT or LOWE'S. They're mass produced. I've been welding and fabricating for over 37 years and I'll have to say you broke everything down and explained it in lamens terms that anymore will understand. Great job on the build. Great video 👍👍. Anyone who wants to know why welders charge so much to build something or repair something, now know why the price might be higher than YOU thought, I'd refer them to this video.
At some point in time hopefully, I will be able to start buildin one of these myself, but have to contend with space constraints( translated means I don't have a garage or workshop), but at the same time, will have an abundant amount of ventilation(fresh air)
Seriously? Who would thumbs down this video? Two thumbs up man! You're awesome. Thank you so much. I need a firewood hauler and don't have money to spend on an expensive trailer. I now have a nice project very soon.
Great job. I built a 5x8 using 2x3 tube 40 years ago. After a few years I cut the front off and added 2’. Still using it today and do not want to sell it. Build something good and it lasts for years. Heck I am 75 years old now and I built it 50 years ago not 40.
I'm gon na be building a trailer exactly like this, I want to let you know, I really appreciate you taking the time to make this video. precise clear detailed instructions, a ten out of ten in my book.
Thanks alot for your video , I was able to build this in 2 days , just waiting to get it vin inspected ! I have a Lincoln 180 MiG, I had to rotate the trailer to flat position welding multiple times but other then welding in flat position it was smooth , I did have to preheat the 3" channel with a blowtorch to get it melt effectively !
I've watched your video before and I'm wanting to build a car trailer but I need a small utility trailer and yours is the size I want it's a great help.
Awesome trailer. Much better than anything you can buy in any of the big box stores and probably for about the same cost or even less. Thanks for the free plans too! I'm gonna build your 6x10 trailer. I have a beat up 4x8 that I bought at Harbor Freight that I have to remove the stake sides on it to get a full sheet of drywall or plywood on it and the load limit on it is pretty low too. This trailer will fit my needs perfectly. Probably build 2 of them to fit different functions. Also gonna see how I can make one into an end dump.
Great job my friend. This is what I do for a living. And the one thing I would consider doing if using gussets on your trailer tongue to the frame this will really add a lot of strength. But overall you killed it man good job
By gussets, do you mean angle iron running perpendicular to the A-frame tongue? Or do you mean run some solid flat iron to fill in the angled corners where the tongue meets the trailer frame?
Good job! I agree with the way you showed the process and agree with everything you said. Ive built a couple over the years and Im thinking i]of just a small one. I always over build and things get heavy. Im going to try and go light but strong so I was looking at a bunch of vedios to het some idea’s. Was going to go with square tubing but I might use ange cas=use its strong and light/
Good job on build. I was going to build a trailer for myself but after pricing all the parts needed and price for supplies like welding wire & welding gas and maybe a few claps, I found it’s a lot cheaper to buy a new trailer that’s all ready built. But you can save even more money by buying a good used one. Or getting a trailer that may need a little tlc.
Fabulous series! It's. been 35 years since I stick welded a utility trailer, and I had forgotten much of the detail work that I had worked through, but your very detailed series brought it all back. My last trailer was made with tubular steel, which was very rigid and steel was cheap then. It made for natural routing for wires. Has steel gotten prohibitively expensive since then? I'll be building a 14 footer for a BX Kubota tractor with a front end loader and possible 3pt accessories this time, and using MIG. Your angle steel looked rigid enough, but I will have to research load tables to see what I need. Any suggestions?
Just a suggestion- I use conduit for all my wiring and line clamps. You this will all but eliminate shorts in the lights, And should you get one, it's easier to rewire.
I mount the fenders about an inch back from centre - because as the springs flatten with load the axle moves to the rear - just looks better and eliminates the possibility of the tyre rubbing on a tight fitting fender
Thank you. So very much for your informative video a person like you makes it very possible for people like us to do things we wouldn't normally do. Without this kind of information. Great Work
thinking about building a trailer ,decided to look for a trailer Video ,and glad I did ,love the way you explain thing's ,and make it look so easy ,great Job thanks
really enjoyed your in depth video, you explained it in simple enough terms for anyone to understand. I used to build trailers, I was the dove man, really enjoyed it. considering building a small trailer, and this one would be ideal for my needs. oh, you could have solved your fender issue by just cutting a notch in the inner fender wall and lifting the fender up how ever far you needed... just an idea. thanks again....
Never mind Hollywood you still deserve an Oscar. One point about bearing seals. If you are not using a press to install seals smear grease inside where the garter spring is located, using a hammer can often jolt the spring off the seal and you may not be aware that it happened. Excellent and professionally explained.
Very descriptive video and I appreciate the effort. One thing I'd change is run the hitch bars back to the axle. Depending on weight, you've only got 16" of solid rigidity. The rest of the strength depends on the siderails. It changes center of mass and could fold where the rails stop.
On a flat bed you would be correct, but with a upper rail providing the extra strength/rigidity it is not an issue. I would guess that is why he took the time to explain and show how the upper rail strengthens the trailer as a whole.
This is an awesome video. I do have a question - have you ever thought about putting an acetal/derlin bushing between the hinges to reduce wear? I am not certain if it is needed, but I do know it will save wear and tear.
Trailer looks nice, I have a tip I use when I wire a trailer. I always use stainless steel bolts to connect the ground wire, up front and at each light. I mig weld the bolt head to the trailer that way you will never loose a ground connection, which from what I have experienced is the main cause for trailer lights wiring problems.
imystery man the other lighting problem with trailers is when the cable at the front gets damaged from being out in the weather for a few years. Last time I rewired my little trailer, I put a socket on the inside of the draw bar the same as the one on the back of the car, and put a plug on each end of a piece of cable so I have a removable cable connecting trailer to car. Works a treat!
Ive worked in Collision Shops all my life as Bodyman / Painter. Rust is my enemy. I noticed you have a lot of bare metal under pieces you can’t treat. I think I may use an Etch Primer or Direct To Metal Sealer on all my pieces then grind were I need to weld. Its a paint to have to stop and grind each weld area, but I think it will be worth the effort. I did something like this a while back and after i treated the metal I only used a cheap grinding wheel on my drill to clean the metal enough to weld. Prior to paint I also seal joints and all welded areas rot prevent water from resting in those areas. I know its overkill, but as the say9ing goes-……..f its worth doing, its worth doing right.
Good video! Using plastic exam gloves is a good way to avoid getting grease all over while packing bearings. Then, when it’s packed, pull one off, hold the hub with the clean hand, and set it on the race and then pull the other off. Two gloves per bearing is a small price to pay
Very detailed video buddy!! Sorry about the first comment I made earlier but it definitely made me made when I couldn’t hear the details on some important things i was needing to no!! Anyways the video was a very detailed and very informative to everyone!! If someone couldn’t figure out how to build there trailer after watching your video they definitely should not be even trying to build one anyways!!! Awesome
