TRAILER TONGUE & FENDER REPLACEMENT (Using Original Parts)

A customer brought by a trailer that needed a tongue repair. It’s an old trailer and some of the parts were still good and usable, but the thin metal on the tongue started to show wear and tear from years of hauling things. So we replaced some of the thin metal, reused the usable parts, and replaced the fenders with new ones. Standard little repair that I thought provided a few handy tips along the way. Hope you catch something new or if not just enjoy the watch. Have a good one!

Great videos! I’ve been welding and doing fab work for almost 30 years. I’ve never had any official welding education but was taught by experienced welders and fabricators on the jobs coming up. I wouldn’t change a thing. Hands on experience is the best way for some. Keep the great videos coming man! You’re helping so many people trying to learn!

Hey “A” man, I’ve done that job too, almost the exact same way. I also wanted to give an update on the first gates I hung (ever) , and the jacks that you have, I made my own. They worked perfectly. The guy that was helping me thought it was the greatest thing to use. Thank you for such a great, simple concept to make these jobs so much easier. By the way, the owner loved them. Hood down lights on.

This is my suggestion and why. In any mitre join of tubing of the same size, you should always halve the angle. Otherwise you will have a gaping hole to fill in the piece that has the most acute angle. For example, with a cut of 45 degrees, the face of the material will be 41% longer than the cross section of the material. From an engineering perspective, the weld under the frame should be made to maintain the strength of the joint. A small, say 1/4" hole at each end of the tubing will suffice for any drainage without weakening the frame. I have enjoyed many of your videos and have learned some welding tricks from you. Keep up the good work.

having seen video's of vehicles with tube frames rusting out, i would put a spray tube in the length of the tubing to rinse out and drain away any salt residue with a simple hose hookup maybe twice a year or weekly in the "salt" zones.

Mark center of the trailer frame left to right. Clamp a piece of sq. tube or rec. tube center on your mark and have it long enough to go past the coupler. Make sure its square with the frame of the trailer and 90 degrees with the axle. Then you can " square " the two sides of the tongue off that tube.

Enjoy all your welding videos. I’ve welded a couple trailers for myself, friends and family and learned to add diagonal bracing between the tongue and headboard/rail. While I know not to overload a trailer based on its axle/spring rating, it’s inevitable a friend/family will borrow the trailer, “accidentally” overload it and hit a dip in the road and bend the tongue.

@@arosswelding Definitely understand the time component, but I do wonder if the parts side is a supply chain related issue or a regional thing. The Curt 25217 Bulldog-style couplers usually run around $60-$70 from Amazon, while the one that came off appears to be a standard generic a-frame coupler ($25-$35). Amazing how thing fluctuate over the course of a few months and a few hundred miles.

Where I live any repairs to a trailer used in commerce may only duplicate the original strength of the factory parts. No "reinforcing" of the original parts may be done. We used to get customers with 2500 pound trailers and had been carrying 4000 pounds --or more at times--and could not understand why the tongue was bent, axles bent, blown tires and worse. They wanted us to reinforce the tongue or build a stronger one so they could "haul more". An oft heard expression was ---"it'll hold it"--meaning if it would physically fit on the trailer--it should hold it!! Folks thought nothing of putting 30,000 pounds on a 12k trailer then bringing it in with bent springs, brakes worn out after only 500 miles and more. Some of the things we saw were actually scary!!

I built my landscaping trailer with 3x2 0.120 wall and it's held up being overloaded a few times... 0.188 wall 3x2 is plenty strong. 4x2 0.120 would be a step up and probably the best would be 14g 4x2. It's light and it has just a little more strength than 3x2 0.120 wall. But 3x2 0.188 wall is still stronger.

2nd Comment If it were I, I would have considered leaving the existing A- frame portion of the hitch (which appears to be in excellent condition) and come along the outside with my new metal tubing acting as a "doubler" and extending the additional 2 feet using a new tongue plate (they're cheap). Think of the time spent doing it this way -- way less, I'd think.
