Thanks for all the explicit instruction. I'm at the stage of having all the Kerdi-board installed and the majority of screw/washers waterproofed with 2-in-1. About to thinset (Kerabond T) the Kerdi band on the seams. (BTW I asked you to clarify a remark you made in a response to Josh .... like 9 months ago, but I saw it just now and elaborated my confusion about Kerdi-band overlapping bottom of Kerdi-board and the flange it abuts... if you would be so kind, after you set me straight on this current question, that I'm about to get to) Anyway, I will have my 12-inch-by-24-inch porcelain tiles overlapping the bottom of the Kerdi board and hiding the tub/shower-pan flange by about an inch. So, should I shove some 2-in-1 into the bottom of the gap where the tiles will almost touch the tub/shower pan deck? AND, if I do that, should I leave some weeping hole gaps in the bead of 2-in-1? This was advised by another DIY video guy (ahem! coff-coff-floor elf coff-coff... not mentioning any names). He sez the Kerdi or other waterproofing behind the tiles is definitely water-proof, but the tile layer (notably grout) won't be totally waterproof, so any moisture that gets through and is trapped back there has an opportunity to exit via the weep holes. Sounds fishy when you have all that thinset in there, but I thought I'd ask. Thanks for your excellent teaching videos. Contractors everywhere are going to lose a lot of business correcting home-owner mistakes that might not happen, now. :-)

I like your product substitution mentality. Was just contemplating the seemingly overpriced $30 Kerdi trowel and $30 Kerdi Fix. Lowes tile guy said he has to fight to keep kerdi board available and they will not let him stock Kerdi Fix for some reason. I've had to cobble my kerdi shower system together from various suppliers and online as neither HD or Lowes carry everything needed. Why sell the freaking boards and fabric but not the All Set, trowel and kerdi fix? Good video.

I love this system! Think I can do this with only a plumber, even as a single gal. I know this is an old video, but I want to ask: my walls seem to have no sign of mold at all. Even the old pink insulation I removed looks almost pristine. There's just a bit of mildew behind the tar paper and I wonder what to replace the tar paper with, especially on the two exterior walls (brick on frame construction).

I have read several articles in forums online that state that having a vapor barrier behind this waterproof system as it can create a "moisture sandwich" and is not recommended, if possible could you please advise me of the pros or cons to having the vapor barrier as I was unable to find the answer on the companies website. @Kizz, just to clarify your concerns, correct me if I'm wrong here, but in order for Kerdi Board to turn a "small fire into a life taking inferno', wouldn't the whole bathroom have to be on fire and either the tiles which are impervious to flame have fallen off to allow access to the Kerdi, or the walls have burned down from the other rooms to reach the Kerdi? In either scenario, I don't see how a 'small fire' is going to even reach the Kerdi product. Help me to understand your thinking on this.

Schluter products might be a tad pricey, but done right; they are made to last & rather spend little extra at beginning, then having to repair or redo the shower in next 5-7 yrs! Really like the Kerdi products & the ease of use(once ya know what doin'), just wish was easier to buy the schluter no sag easy bond cement & "caulking" at the local box stores. One would think, they sell the other products, so why not that stuff.....?? Love these vids, just wish longer & more😉 Cheers, A Not sure if have done, but think seeing a vid on repair & fixing(regrouting) a shower etc...would be pretty interesting. Just to see your take(tips & tricks); cuz always love learning new ways etc...😊

Love your channel! Wondering what you do around the lip of the tub where the kerdi sits. I have my board installed but get differing opinion on how to proceed from here. One channel recommended using unmodified cement and kerdi band to create an overlap across the base of the kerdi board and the lip of the tub. Any thoughts on this?

Hey Jeff, is there anything special you have to do at the outside border where the Kerdi board meets the drywall of the bathroom wall? Great video thanks a lot.
@thomasnorthcastle4130
@thomasnorthcastle4130 4 года назад
I always run my Kerdi flush with my drywall. I make my Kerdi short at least by 2”. I tape the joint with Kerdi Band from the ceiling down to the floor. The reason I do this is so that the tile actually starts on the Kerdi banded drywall and bridges onto the Kerdi Board. I also use Schluter profile strips on the edge of the tile.

Your videos have been a world of help to me. On Kerdi-Board, Schluter only refers to the outer orange membranes as "fleece webbing for effective anchoring in thin-set mortar." I'm not sure the orange material here is the same as the waterproof Kerdi membrane. TBD, but the waterproofing component may only be the polystyrene foam. I'm not sure the cut in half trick for small vehicle transport mentioned at 4:15 will maintain waterproofing.
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 5 лет назад
Hi John, the fleece is also made from plastic and is waterproof, for added protection you could use the kerdi fix in the fold before straightening oit the board.

great video but there is no way I would just caulk that joint from tub to the board when i have the opportunity to lap it nicely with the membrane-this is the place to over engineer. I agree on the screw holes, which is what the USG system does, but the tub surround is almost ALWAYS the spot that fails on a tub and caulking, I don't care how magical it is will eventually dry out and fail. Cement and that membrane will not.

My only question is obviously the Kerdi board is thicker than the mounting flange for the tub so where the bottom of the Kerdi board meets the flange and you sealed it wouldn't the Kerdi board stick out a good bit and make that seam an issue? Either that or I assume you have a shim of some kind behind the screws for the tub mount? Couldn't you also run the Kerdi board all the way to the floor before installing the tub and then seal that seam? Thanks

I'm renovating all three baths in my house this Spring (one bath and two showers). I'm definitely going to go with this system for all three/ It sounds like I will need corner membranes and bedpans for the showers though - I'm a little worried about cost... You had some nice price estimates in this video on the wall boards and 4" membranes - in your experience, are the corner membranes and bedpans overpriced, or are there creative alternatives? Much thanks for this video from your friendly neighbors to the south!

@kennyackerman5528
@kennyackerman5528 4 года назад
Schluter makes curbs for bonding to their pans and you use kerdi band to bond it
@rbljackson
@rbljackson 4 года назад
are you saying that I could use that lepage seal and bond for the seams in addition to sealing and filling the screw holes? If yes....does that mean I wouldn't need to put the tape in the saeams? I didn't quite follow if that seal and bond would just be for the screws, or the seams and screws. This method of using kerdi board looks MUCH easier to do than using the cement board. Easier cutting, grid lines, lighter than cement board, and no need to use that roll on sealer. IM guessing the downside is the additional cost.

Hi Samir, I use kerdi pre sloped shower pans that already have the membrane on them. all I do is use the kerdi band to seal the floor to the wall. and done. Cheers!

That Lepage 2 in 1 I find is junk, it cannot handle water and it stays soft and putty, used around tube and applied a surround strip over it. There was a tiny hole in the stripe and it peeled off on the edge, when I removed it to put a new strip around it, the caulking was soggy. 100% silicone is the way to go. I then read the label it it states that it not to be used where it can get constant wetting.... why then even say for bath and sink?. Was doing shower pan same time this happen, luckily things happened this way, so I hurried to check under pan liner that was curing for a week..... guess what? Soft like putty , used fingers to “rub it off” luckily I had not cast the cement over pan liner.

Thanks for the video! What about the joint between the kerdi board and Sheetrock? What is recommended? Schluter thinset or regular plaster? The joint is around 8 inches from the shower. Thx

You do know if this leaks thie repair and or replacement is on you. Reason being you didn’t use schluter all set and Kerdi fix. That is the only way to have a warranty. You spent all that money on the board and membrane and you get no warranty. Seems to be a waste of money and time. The all set is more expensive but you are not paying for it you add the cost into your bid,if people ask why so high you need to explain the warranty proocess (I spelled wrong I no ). What’s an extra $20 or $30 ?

Thanks for the video. Would it be acceptable to run a strip around the whole tub flange instead of caulking it?

Great informative video. We are renovating our ensuite. and installing a shower. I really like the Schluter system but they don't supply a 60" x 36" base. Im tossed what we are going to do for a shower base. What do you recommend doing?

How did you make up the corner at the Kerdi board and the sheetrock on the ceiling?

From tests I have seen, Allset thinset does not waterproof and fails many tests, you have to use Ardex 8+9 or something to waterproof. Have you considered that to be an issue?

If you had to choose. Would you use this or that cement board?
