Water can leak at the transition piece going from the wall to the floor. It would be better to install the transition piece before the wall so it is overlapped from the top. Like doing shingles you want to do all u can to keep water on top. You would not install flashing on top of a shingle because it can leak even if sealant was applied. So why would you take the chance here. Have experienced leaks caused by doing this in this application already. On this video during water test that the thunder is already wicking the water. This is what causes water leaks later after tile install. Best solution I have found is to use a water proofing method over all joints prior to tile installation

why is the long corners schluter put on prior to the wall? Will not the water go behind the tile seeping behind the bottom corner put on last. I have done this several times with this system and I still always put down in this order. Floor, corners and then the walls so there is no "natural drainage" down behind something. Not to worry; drywall can be used because KERDI is a waterproofing membrane and will therefore not allow any water to penetrate and damage the drywall. We generally install drywall screws every 12" o.c., which is standard.
@AmosMosesJr
@AmosMosesJr 4 года назад
Schluter-Systems North America as a plumber things can and will go wrong. I've seen it. This is not a perfect world and I am not necessarily asserting that the Kerdi will fail. Other issues from behind the wall can cause water damage too. I am just saying it is an unwise practice if trying to save money. Plus depending on tile selection there will be a lot of weight hanging from those screws. Ordinary drywall screws are not known for their shear strength.

Weird that they have you doing the wall first! As someone who has done a lot of roofing and almost every other home exterior, and for the past 15 years flooring and showers exclusively, I have to say that I always work from bottom up when waterproofing, meaning that I do the pan waterproofing then put the wall waterproofing on top of that, an would advise everyone to do the same. Why use a butt-seam at 5:30 when you could just overlap the two full sheets of Kerdi-membrane like you did on the other wall? Are you just demonstrating the use of the band if for some reason it's impossible to just easily/simply overlap the full sheets upon one another and skip the whole need for the kerdi-band process?
@schlutersystems1
@schlutersystems1 3 года назад
Hi there, yes, we are just showing the two options in this video. Since the KERDI-BAND is thinner than KERDI, the butt-joint method might be preferred when installing smaller tiles, such as mosaics, because there will be a little less build-up. Hope that helps!

I saw in another KERDI video that he was screwing the KERDI board directly to the wall studs. This video shows covering wallboard with KIRDI membrane. What are the pros and cons to this? I would think if you are totally renovating a tub/or shower you would be down to the studs anyway.

Hi there! There are pros to each option; it is a personal choice. If you are directly on the studs, the KERDI-BOARD will save you a lot of time. @schlutersystems1
@schlutersystems1 2 года назад
Hi there! Close, but not quite. 🙂 We are saying that all waterproofing connections with KERDI, KERDI-BAND, KERECK corners, and/or valve seals need a 2" overlap, however, the corners are longer than 2", so the KERDI-BAND can be brought back a little in that area so the strips don't overlap each other. This will still allow for the required 2" overlap. Hope that clears it up!
@pcskier3611

Wouldn't it be better to install the floor pan first, and then the wall sheets with a 2" overlap on the floors, so any water getting behind tile would drain down and out over the overlap, rather than relying on the band joint? Or better yet, install the floor flush to the studs/bottom plate, then drywall, then Schluter wall sheets? Then do the corners, but none of the wall to floor banding? Would this be allowable if I choose to do it that way?
@schlutersystems1

Hi there, Either way is fine. It generally just depends on user preference. Some like to overlap the KERDI as the go, whereas others prefer to butt join the KERDI and then cover with the KERDI-BAND. One practical reason for using the KERDI-BAND in some instances is when a small mosaic is being installed over the seam. Since the KERDI-BAND is thinner than KERDI, the build-up at the seam would be slightly less. Hope this helps!

So, is it fair to say that installing the bottom corner strip onto the wall and tray, and then flash over the strip with the wall membrane a "belt and suspenders" method? Why not make it the standard installation sequence? Or just extend the wall membrane minimum 2" (6" for belt/suspenders) onto the tray...?

Hi Steven, the flange outlet is connected to the drain pipe with either PVC or ABS glue, depending on which pipe material and corresponding drain you are using. The reason we don't show that in this video is because there is access below to connect the drain later. Can I ask why you would use corner and seems on the outside and not the inside?
@schlutersystems1
@schlutersystems1 Год назад
Hi there. Since KERDI membrane is installed over the solid backing down to the subfloor and the provided shower tray is waterproof, the seams of the outside perimeter and corner seams of the shower tray must be sealed to create a fully waterproof and vapor tight enclosure. By installing the KERDI-BAND and KERDI-KERECK inside corners over the pre-sloped shower tray, these components prevent moisture disseminating below the top of the tray; therefore, installing the KERDI-BAND and KERDI-KERECK corners underneath the tray is not necessary as moisture will not travel to the substrate. Hope that helps!

Can I install without pan and use the wall membrane instead for the bottom of the shower and then use grout to slope to the drain?
@schlutersystems1
@schlutersystems1 4 года назад
Hi there! Apologies for the delay... The options for sloping a tiled shower floor to the drain are a KERDI-SHOWER-TRAY or a Portland cement mortar bed. The sloped mortar bed would need to be installed prior to the KERDI membrane so it wall be waterproofed on top and the water would slope to the drain and not saturate the mortar bed. The KERDI on top of the mortar bed would also continue up the walls in accordance with our Shower Systems Installation Handbook to create a completely waterproofed and properly sloped installation from the shower head to the drain. Neither grout or thin-set would be appropriate materials for creating a slope for the shower floor. Why not overlap and join the seams together with kerdi band in a process that water never runs directly into a seam? For example..first membrane the shower pan. Then apply kerdi band and corners to the pan and wall board. Then membrane the wall over the kerdi band so the seams are never in direct contact with the direction of water flow. The schluter method is putting too much faith in the technology of how the kerdi band adheres to the membrane through the thinset during the curing process. This process could result in failure given the fact that thinset isnt waterproof and its possible theres not a 100% connection of the overlapping membranes. Installing it in the overlap method I stated in beginning of this post takes out any possibility of water flowing directly into any seam.

so your saying do the shower pan first, connecting all the corners and membranes to the board then do the walls over that so the wall membrane is the “front” piece of membrane showing and not the corners? sorry just having trouble envisioning it. the way you stated makes more sense, no seam contact with water. just wanna clarify.
@amattson6578
@amattson6578 9 месяцев назад
@@nickroussain317 yes no direct seam contact. I call it the shingle method. Shingles overlap so water sheds over the shingles. Same principle here. Obviously the technology guarantees full waterproof either way but for me as the installer I like having extra piece of mind knowing that any water moving towards the drain will not run directly into a seam but rather flow over the seams since they overlap from the top down like shingles. Its still the same technology so the manufacturer should still warranty the product as long as youre still using the mortar they recommend and doing the manufacter recommended overlap which is usually like 2"

You'll need an outside corner and some KERDI-BAND to waterproof that area. This video explains how to waterproof the whole 90 degree corner of the curb, inside and out, in detail: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IbPEFlN94nU.html

I have access to drain, in fact it sits above my subfloor and Kerdi shower pan. Do I cut that drainpipe two inches below the bottom or two inches below the top of the subfloor? Does the Kerdi PVC drain assembly then get glued to my drain pipe or does it just fit into place? Thanks.
