How to Build a YT Jeffsy Base (2020 model)

Join me as I build my first (and, spoiler alert, second) YT Jeffsy Base 29 bikes (2020 model). I have zero experience doing this, so what follows is very similar to what you might experience if you, like me, are a mountain biking newbie doing this for the first time.
As mentioned in the video, here's a Rockshox site for setting up the suspension: trailhead.rockshox.com/en/
You plug in your serial number and weight and it'll give you the correct PSI and recoil settings.

Just built mine and rode it for the first time last weekend - great bike. my first new bike in about 12 years. The bike is very stable and fun to ride. I'm 6'6" and got the XXL - it's the first bike that's fit me properly. Weighed in at 35.5 lbs though which is a bit heavier than I thought it would be but it's a big bike and aluminum frame. I love this bike - works as advertised for sure.

A really useful video. I’m looking at ordering the Izzo and one of the things that has always concerned me is the (albeit very limited) requirement to add the derailleur, but this take the worry away and I’ll be sure to have your vid handy when the day arrives! Cheers.
@CharlieWentOutside
@CharlieWentOutside 4 года назад
Glad it was helpful! Yeah, the derailleur was the most confusing bit, but once you get it figured out it's actually quite straightforward on the Jeffsy, and I would assume the Izzo is very similar if not identical. Have fun with it, it looks super cool! I definitely would have considered that, but they didn't release it until after I was up and running on the Jeffsy. (No regrets, I love the Jeffsy...but the Izzo looks really cool too, I hope to try one someday).

Hey Charlie, The Jeffsy looks like a great bike. I live in New Hampshire saw that you were from Maine. You look like a tall guy what size did you get? Were you able to demo a bike before you bought it From YT. I am 6 foot tall and was thinking on getting a xlarge.Heard they run small.
@CharlieWentOutside

I'm 6' and I ended up getting a large. I think an XL would have worked, but I messaged YT on Facebook and asked which they'd recommend for a beginner, and they said large. So far, no regrets about it (but I'm new to MTB so I may not have a great feel for what's the right fit. Feels good to me, tho)

I just put mine together, but I’m not sure if I used the torque wrench correctly. So, I just set the the needle to a specific rating, and then tighten until it’s in place? Or is it supposed to click ?
@CharlieWentOutside
@CharlieWentOutside 3 года назад
A "real" torque wrench would click. The ones that come with the Jeffsy don't click though, they just kinda stop being easy to turn when they've hit the set torque. If you've set it to the correct torque, tightened, and it feels like it's tight and pushing more isn't really doing anything, you've probably got it right. (That said, in the long-run you may want to pick up a proper torque wrench that clicks if you're going to be working on your bike yourself. Amazon sells one by "Pro Bike Tool" that I've been happy with. But you don't need this for assembly, especially if you've got the Base (non-carbon) model like I do.

Hey Charlie, its me again. I was going back through some old videos and stumbled across this one again because I too was interested in the Jeffsy at the time. On a totally unrelated note, what kind of stand are you using in this video? Is it the one I think it is from Amazon? I just wanted to get your opinion on how its held up with a 29er and general use so that I do not go out and pay double for something that says "Park Tool." Thanks again.
@CharlieWentOutside
@CharlieWentOutside 3 года назад
It is indeed from Amazon, and it has held up just fine. I think they've jacked up the price since I bought it, but it should still be much cheaper than Park Tool's. (I've seen park tool's in a shop and to be fair it is super nice. Looks totally bombproof. But my cheap Amazon one holds my 35+lb bike just fine)

They were these: smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MRS3G7O/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1 "Currently unavailable" but I think Rockbros makes a bunch that are basically the same thing. They're not amazing, and I'll probably upgrade them at some point, but I figured it didn't make sense to buy nice pedals before I'm actually decent at biking, since I'll just be smashing them on rocks. @arviddistner3017

nice, but do NOT tight the handlebars like that! there's a high risk of destroying the bars and the clamp, instead, tighten them in a "X" pattern, this will make sure it's tightened in a balanced fashion
@CharlieWentOutside
@CharlieWentOutside 4 года назад
I'm not sure I understand what you mean by an X pattern? The setup manual from YT does specifically say to do it this way though (tighten the top first until there's no gap, then tighten the bottom).
@arviddistner3017
@arviddistner3017 4 года назад
@@CharlieWentOutside ok, maybe it's specific for this stem, but as a general rule, to not tighten one side more, tight a little bit on the top right, bottom left, top left, bottom right, and continue like that, like I said, if it says so in the manual, that's probably correct, but if so, specific for that stem, so don't use that method for every stem, sorry🤗
@CharlieWentOutside
@CharlieWentOutside 4 года назад
@@arviddistner3017 Yeah fair enough! I actually thought it was kind of odd too. I haven't built bikes before, but tightening one screw completely before touching others is pretty uncommon in my experience assembling other stuff. However, that's what the manual said to do, so I went with it. The two screws(top and bottom) also had different torque specs, so it probably is something specific to the stem.

Someone told me to buy YT Jeffsy Base instead of Vitus Mythique VRX. What are your thoughts?
@CharlieWentOutside
@CharlieWentOutside 3 года назад
I haven't ridden the Vitus. On paper they look pretty similar. Vitus has a little less travel, but it also has a threaded BB, which is kinda nice if you're going to be working on it at home (the Jeffsy is press-fit, which is kind of annoying). Same drivetrain, same geometry (more or less). Two big differences are the brakes and the fork/shock, but I haven't ridden the parts on that Vitus so I can't say if they're better or worse. If you have a chance, obviously I'd say ride both and see how they feel. Honestly, I'm guessing you'd be happy with and get lots of fun out of either bike, but without having tried the Vitus myself it's hard to know how it might feel different from the Jeffsy.
@neilfpv
@neilfpv 3 года назад
@@CharlieWentOutside I'm very new to mtb. I got lost when you said " but it also has a threaded BB, which is kinda nice if you're going to be working on it at home". I'm not sure what BB is. I really appreciate you explaining it! There are vloggers who does not respond or will write a short phrase. You went extra mile in responding and I really thank you so much for that! 😊
@CharlieWentOutside
@CharlieWentOutside 3 года назад
@@neilfpv My pleasure! Yeah, BB is bottom bracket - it's not really a big deal either way, and if you plan to have a shop work on your bike you can pretty much just ignore it. If you DO plan to do a lot of repairs at home, a threaded bottom bracket is just nicer because it's easier to fit in securely - it's just like screwing in a screw, whereas with a pressfit bottom bracket putting one in is a bit more complicated. I'm hoping to make some videos explaining some of these "bike basics" over the winter season this year. A lot of this kind of technical stuff, bike geometry details, etc. can be really confusing to figure out at first.
