Thank you for the kind words! It's so damn cool to see our tools out in the wild like this... I'm digging the combination of power tools and hand work you do to make your process repeatable... I'm also digging that fret caddie! I need to pick one up for the fretwork I've got coming up.

I've been using a couple of toothpicks as index pins when gluing on the fretboard. I drill the holes in the fret slots after clamping it place with no glue making sure it is perfectly aligned. Just slot the toothpick after the glue dries and the fret easily covers the top of the toothpick. I've never had one shift when gluing.

Saw these bits on Amazon last year. Passed because when you go to cut the second half, the bearing is not referencing on a flat surface, so it won't give the same cut as the first pass. Tried to pause the video to see if your results were perfectly symmetrical, but you didn't dwell on it long enough. Not to mention the potential for tearout.

Thanks guys. I tried a 12" version of the radius bit and got some tear out. I did it before cutting the sides and didn't attach it to a large block though. Maybe, I'll try that next time.

I don’t believe there is the indexing issue that a couple of posters have suggested. The fretboard starts flat. The bearing is about ¼” wide. The router bit cutting blade stops short of the bearing. As long as the bearing is pretty close to centered, it will still be riding on the uncut fretboard surface when the piece is flipped over. You will end up with a slight “hump” along the fretboard centerline. Still a lot less sanding and an accurate starting point for the sanding process. I tried to make a drawing below: Fretboard ________________________________________________________________________________________ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - Bearing rides in center with cut portions above and below the dashed lines __________________________________________________________________________ Hope this makes sense?

Awesome video, as always. Quick question: Is there a reason you don't use indexing pins to lock down the fretboard in place? I know that's a popular method of doing it. I've also heard that sawdust can work just as well as salt, and it might look better if any got the the edge.

If you were doing a mother of Peral inlay, do you do the inlay after the radius or do you use a sanding beam? Where did you get your rachet clamps ?

Love the videos! I’ve learned a lot. I have a question. I’ve worked on guitars (pots, pickup swaps,etc…), built some necks, and done some refrets. An online person stated that I’m not a luthier. My question, when can you actually call yourself a luthier? Thank gents!

where did you get the alluminum samding radius piece you used as caul to clamp with
@johngriswold2213
@johngriswold2213 Год назад
I tend to clamp the fingerboard dry, exactly in the right place, and then drill a 1/16" hole through the first fret slot on one side of the carbon rod reinforcement and around the 12th fret slot on the other side. I then cut the heads off two 1/16" brads and tap them lightly into the predrilled holes. These make removable, foolproof (me) index pins to keep the fretboard from sliding around on glueup. I do have to drill complementary holes in my clamping cauls. The pins pull out easy after unclamping, you could always rub wax on them if you are nervous. On a mean girl note, has building this guitar turned your hair gray? ;)

When you sand the radius then it seems that the fret slot becomes more shallow at the edges. Is this a problem?
@larrycoon3794

Chris, do you see value in the systems that use index pins for positioning the fretboard for gluing, like the one from Elevate? Would an amateur like me benefit?
@CastlebayNet_Music
@CastlebayNet_Music Год назад
I always use indexing pins. I take wire brads and drive them into the neck, leaving them a bit proud. Cutting them off with a pair of diagonal cutters will leave a sharp point a couple of mm above the surface of the neck. Position the fretboard where you want it and give it a tap over the pins with a soft mallet. Double-check to make sure the pins put the fingerboard where you want it. If things moved when you swatted the fingerboard you can pull out the offending brad and redo in a new location. Apply glue and then slide the fingerboard around until it drops over your pins. Clamp up and you're done.

Really curious how you get that router bit to cut the same heights on both passes - seems like the bearing would be referencing an already cut surface when you do the second side…

I use 1/16” drill bits as locating pins at the 1st and 12th frets. Nothing moves.

Hi Chris…… a technical question? There’s a really high end traditional classical builder, I believe, in Michigan. No truss rod used but bolt on neck really surprised me. He puts a slight concave on the bottom side, (glue side), of his fretboards. He stresses the detail as being of critical importance. Have you heard of that ever? What is accomplished from doing so? Thanks
@gbish6906
@gbish6906 Год назад
That is to set a bit of relief in the neck, since there is no truss rod to help with that, in that case. While the strings themselves will typically induce some relief, nylon strings on a classical have much less string tension than steel strings.

GUYS! I enjoy your videos, I've been subbed for years; but please stop milking this guitar build, enough is enough. This guitar build series has been go on for over 2 years, and it's getting to the stage where it's not fun to watch any more. I know you guys are probably busy building guitars; but waiting a month to see 25mins of actual work on this guitar just isn't fun. Sorry for being negative; but I wanted to give you some honest feedback from a long time viewer, supporter and sub of your channel.

Yo - lemme axe you sumpmm. I'm considering a Guild D-55 (sitka with rosewood). Sweetwater offers choices in finished guitars by 'weight'. If one is 3- 4 ounces heavier than another, is that indicative of the sound quality?
