This video shows the steps involved in making a smart mirror with a Raspberry Pi and Alexa voice assistant.
There are many steps, but it should be do-able by anyone with rough familiarity with raspberry pi or linux, and the carpentry skills to build a wooden frame.

Excellent build Ben! I will be doing the same this weekend but using a 50" monitor and a small windows client pc I have laying around, the reason for windows is because rainmeter is graphicly amazing vs anything else ive seen. the idea for using film is great! and Ive just ordered a 36x 24 foot roll now because of your vid! Is there anyway to run Alexa on windows???
@BenjaminEagan
@BenjaminEagan 7 лет назад
Thanks Donal! That will be an impressive build at 50". Send me a photo when you're done! And yes, Alexa can be setup on windows: github.com/alexa/alexa-avs-sample-app/wiki/Windows

Very nice work indeed you did there m8 .is it possible to make alexa play music from youtube or give voice control to lets say open browser and pick a song from youtube? otherwise that is the point of having voice or even alexa on a mirror that only shows weather and time and tells you some info?should it not make it more interactive ?or even more put touch screen so do it manually ?

Great video bro! One question I was thinking of doing the same thing and using a larger mirror with a small size monitor behind it so I don't have to use a lot of power running a large monitor. the question I have is, can you see the outline of the smaller monitor behind the large mirror?
@BenjaminEagan
@BenjaminEagan 7 лет назад
Hey, thanks Techy Techerson! The outline is only visible when the lights are off or very dim. This video shows a couple angles, and even the Pi desktop temporarily - should give a good idea of what it's like: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GJniRwFJFts.html

program it to respond to "Mirror mirror on the wall", instead of Alexa. Normal person: "Hey Siri, How much water should I drink every day?" Me (an intellectual): "Mirror mirror on the wall, how many micrograms of Dihydrogen monoxide should the average homosapian consume daily?"

First of all, thank you so much for your build guide! It's worked great so far!~ One problem I was running into was getting the USB Audio Adapter to work. Can you provide any tips/steps on getting the Plugable USB Audio Adapter to work on Raspberry Pi 3 with Raspbian Jessie? Whenever I try to enable the Alexa Wake Words, I get an error and know something's wrong with the audio setup.
@BenjaminEagan
@BenjaminEagan 7 лет назад
I would start by clicking the "raspberry" start menu -> preferences -> audio device settings. Do you see two options under sound card? Check the "USB Sound Card" levels here to confirm you're receiving mic input. This was all mine required, let me know what you see when doing this.

I'm sure you've been asked this before but I can't find it. I hate laying Vinyl and Film, what are you using in the bottle ? Dish soap and water or a purpose made solution ?
@BenjaminEagan
@BenjaminEagan 2 года назад
Just dish soap and water. I actually burned a whole role trying to get the technique right, but found in the end the best strategy was : 1. Clean surface with alcohol 2. Spray generously everywhere 3. Lay down the film and get it lined up 4. Pin one corner with your finger and thumb, and squeegee firmly so you only pass each area one 5. Wait a few hours before you decide if it's any good! Letting the film dry completely improved the quality a little. It's definitely a bit of an art though, so using some scrap pieces to practice is probably worth it.

Nice work but wt about the power consumption? the monitor and RPi gonna be on all the time right ?! may be go to sleep mode if there is no one in front of the mirror but how we gonna wake RPi again, well maybe we need a surveillance cam or motion sen. for the trigger.
@BenjaminEagan
@BenjaminEagan 7 лет назад
I have mine scheduled to turn off at midnight and on again at 6:30am. You could probably use IFTT to do some location triggering too that would run the shutdown or startup script. A motion sensor would be interesting too!

can you use this for a television and if so can it just be placed in front or does it need to go directly on to front of screen. made a cabinet and wanted mirror on the front but not directly on tv. do you think this will work? thanks
@BenjaminEagan
@BenjaminEagan 5 лет назад
There can be a bit of a gap, but it leads to slight ghosting of the text. I think this has to do with the thickness of your mirror pane as well (thinner is crisper). Personally I'd try to keep the distance under 0.5 cm.
@dman34
@dman34 6 лет назад
I have 4 identical 24 inch led monitors I'd like to try this with (because I couldn't bring my self to try this with a large, functional led television). Do you have any ideas about what the effects of having multiple monitors behind the mirror might be?
@JRich808
@JRich808 5 лет назад
only issue you would have is the raspberry pi really isnt powerfull enough graphically to run 4 montiors i would put in a low end gaming rig with a piexpress cable and mount a moderate quality video card in it .

Ben, great video I have a question about the microphone. What are your recommendations on a pi mic that works well with Alexia? Both distance wise and compatibility. I don't want to hide it behind the screen somewhere and use from 2-4 meters away.
@BenjaminEagan
@BenjaminEagan 7 лет назад
Anything with the 1/8" aux format not requiring power would be compatible and work well. I am just using the first one I saw on Amazon, but I there is probably some better mic using directional input or far field or something. From your username I suspect you might have a better idea of an ideal mic for picking voices in a room than I do! What would your ideal hardware be?

Hey Ben, I thought that if you're using the Amazon Echo service, you had to have a button as it's against the T&C's for voice activation.
@BenjaminEagan
@BenjaminEagan 7 лет назад
This is installed straight from Amazon, so I seriously doubt they're releasing a package that breaks their T&S. What you might be thinking of is replacing the wake word. This can be done, but using any wake word other than "Alexa" could be breaking the T&S.

@jackeyniraula

dang! so just rip the working monitor, slap it behind the mirror, connect it to internet-ready processor like Raspberry Pi, use some custom app, frame the borders with wooden block, this must be a real chore to carry it around or even to hang it and to lift that weight may be special mount is needed making it hugely inconvenient making it not so portable. Is there anything that the whole mirror is the display unit in itself and that tiny flat strips run from the corner like we have those in tiny LCDS we order from China?
@vladgorbunov8120
@vladgorbunov8120 7 лет назад
great project! how do you trigger alexa?
@vladgorbunov8120
@vladgorbunov8120 7 лет назад
in smart mirror pt2 video you trigger alexa in a normal way by saying alexa, i thought it was a feature that only Echo devices could legally use
@BenjaminEagan
@BenjaminEagan 7 лет назад
It is not restricted to Echo devices, I'm running the AVS example application for Raspberry Pi exactly as it is distributed by Amazon. They provide a snowboy and kitta_ai powered on device wakeword. I believe it breaks terms and services if you were to alter this, changing the wakeword to something other than "Alexa" in this case.

Doing this exact thing except not a mirror since I don't want to spend the money to make the mirror part. It's just a smart calendar. Check out DAKboard.com I am using them for my interface. It's closed source so font and colors aren't customizable (except font size) but every thing is white so it would be perfect for putting behind a mirror. I like that I can log into the interface from any computer to tweak things rather than having to mess with the code on the Pi.
@BenjaminEagan
@BenjaminEagan 7 лет назад
Cool, I've seen Dakboard suggest before on reddit. Seems like a decent alternative.
@Zach.Nelson
@Zach.Nelson 7 лет назад
I managed to get into kiosk mode and cram Alexa in there while somehow not learning the language. I wanted something more intuitive to customize since I wasn't a fan of the the "stock" magic mirror layouts. I have persistent calendars, weather, and time with a rotating note feed that can be texted to (thanks to ifttt and an rss feed). Have you noticed the wake work engines crashing or taking up excessive memory? I was playing with the voice wake but switched to the button to save memory. But even the push button runs the memory to 70%-80%

Not sure about language, but if Amazon Echo can do it, I expect this can too. Hello Ben, seems I'm running into an error with the personal assistant setup, when running the code in the 2ND terminal window when the web browser appears and takes you to your/mine Amazon developer page to sign in. once signed in, then I click "OK", instead of getting redirected to a new URL for generating the "token", I get a error message. I have gone threw and correct my account setup. still not working. also, step prior to this, I had to move the file to the desktop, because is save it to pi/home, and the code wasn't working for the port 3000 to open. Did it take some time for your developer account to become "active"? I'm thinking because I made changes, this may be my fault and have to wait.
@BenjaminEagan
@BenjaminEagan 7 лет назад
I'm not sure I totally follow, but if you're seeing the developer sign in page I think that's good. Basically after I click sign in, I just close the browser and click ok in the Skills app that launched the browser. Make sure not to click "ok" on that dialogue box until after you've signed in to the developer account. Let me know how that goes. Could you share the error message as well?

I'm considering building one of these. Out of all the smart mirror projects I've seen, yours is definitely the most thought out, and best one overall, so congrats. On your build guide you referred to a USB sound card for the microphone, and a usb speaker. Is it possible to use that same sound card for input and output simultaneously? (since it has both audio jacks). Im planning to hook this up to the room's sound system, so the 3.5mm connection would be very nice. Also, I really like the GUI of this build: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fkVBAcvbrjU.html Would it be possible to have this GUI and Alexa running at the same time? Thanks a lot Woodepic, I'd like to see your build - especially if you add OLED! I can't think of any reason that wouldn't work, but I didn't try it myself. If I take it off the wall any time soon I'll try it out and let you know.

Cool, I might try that then. I'm not sure if I'll go oled though. Unless I based it off of a tablet, there's no way I could get any decent sized oled for less than $1500. I might just stick to my $5 23" garage sale monitor haha

There's basically no coding involved! Just installing programs. You also only need an SD card image. I might make a generic one so people can have magic mirror straight out of the gate by copying to their SD card.
