Great shelter. So many people are doing shelters where you have to be a damn carpenter. This looks like a shelter you can put together over a couple of days that would keep you alive in some serious weather. Well done.

I enjoyed watching this, whilst sitting in my nice warm house! However, I've made umpteen shelters outdoors and it's enjoyable to watch how other folk make theirs: this is a good wee shelter, and it could be a real life saver if you, or some hiker, hunter or whatever finds themselves badly in need of shelter. As It is much more easy to criticise than it is to create, I say this with good intent and in the knowledge that you only had a limited time, but you could improve it by using the thawed out earh from your fire pit, mixed with some water, to put a film of mud on your branches , which would lessen the chance of setting your shelter alight, improve insulation, and also, if no plastic sheet, help stop melted snow dripping in.( It's a lotta work, though! ) an excellent little clip, thanks.

Thanks for the video. Tiny correction at 6:43... cold does not radiate up. What happens is the permafrost sinks heat radiating from your (35 degrees Celsius) warmer body. Heat always transfers from warmer to colder objects.

That is a nice looking shelter and you must have spent about a week building it. I would like to build one that size on our property here in Arkansas, but it would be tough for one person to do.
@coloradomountainmansurviva5484
This actually only took 2 days. 2 full days using a chainsaw but still just 2 days. Resources were very close by. Probably spent 1 more day improving upon it. If I only had use of a handsaw it probably would have taken 4-5 days.

you should've made one side longer and taller then the other thus over lapping ..this would cut down on the rain snow from falling thru
@coloradomountainmansurviva5484
randy ames the rebuild of it is done in the way you are talking about. That video will be posted soon. This is just showing you an alternative way you can do it.

Good job. I do have a question. How do you keep snow, and rain from falling in through the top since it is open for smoke ventilation? I love the design , my motto, keep it simple.
@MrJoeyBoombotz
@MrJoeyBoombotz 7 лет назад
Cross beams should be behind the tree so the 'lean' to 'leans'into the trunk of the tree, especially since the weight of snow could collapse it.
@coloradomountainmansurviva5484
MrJoeyBoombotz they were behind the trunk of the tree if I'm understanding you correctly. The weight of the ribs pushed the crossbars into the tree. With more than a foot of snow on it, I stood on the top and it did not budge. The shelter lasted nearly 8 months before I took it down and moved it. It was plenty sturdy.
@MrJoeyBoombotz
@MrJoeyBoombotz 7 лет назад
The top cross beam was in front of tree. All the crossbeams should be oriented to lean into the tree. Nice video, btw. A dakota style fir pit with a sepaate air feed would do a LOT to reduce smoke inside the structure as well when the ground thaws. 3 or 4 1inch "smoke holes' around the inside top of the pit would give a secondary air feed to burn even more smoke for a hotter, slower burning fire.
@coloradomountainmansurviva5484
MrJoeyBoombotz there are 2 top crossbeams. 1 on each side of the tree. More or less 2 separate lean-tos.
@coloradomountainmansurviva5484
MrJoeyBoombotz I will put a Dakota fire pit on the new rebuild. Thanks for the input.

Hey there, that was a helpful video. I'm currently building my very first long term shelter and it always looks much easier in videos than it actually is! Just subbed :) How long did it take you to build, start to finish?
@thesurvivaluniversity
@thesurvivaluniversity 6 лет назад
Yes, the videos make things look way easier. I think this shelter took me about 16 hours to build on my own. The snow slowed me down a lot.
@ThePeepingEgg
@ThePeepingEgg 6 лет назад
Thank you for your reply - 16 hours is still pretty good in my opinion. I'm finding that the snow is definitely making things much more difficult but it's still a great learning experience. One thing I do appreciate in the winter is the lack of hornets, fireants and other bugs & critters that normally make things more difficult lol I managed to get a good portion of it done but the temps dropped to -20 windchill and -2 average temperature, so I chose to chicken out lol Cheers :)
@coloradomountainmansurviva5484
nothing wrong with "chickening out" Pride and ego are what normally get people hurt. It takes a wise person to know when to turn back so that they can live to attempt something another day. I am glad that you are attempting this though! Nothing beats hands on experience.
@ThePeepingEgg
@ThePeepingEgg 6 лет назад
I really appreciate the feedback on the "chickening out". I agree that it's better to turn back and simply go back another day. And you are absolutely right..nothing beats hands on experience! Watching something vs. actually doing it are 2 very different things. It's quite a work out, too! 😅😅

Long term shelter until the trees grow and tear it apart.
@Sailor376also
@Sailor376also 7 лет назад
I apologize. I too have often done silva management, selecting the one or two,, of three trees that might be too close. Slip the less good trees out of a stand to allow sunlight and resources to the one best. And yes,, in recently burned over areas,,, you may well have a too thick stand 10 or 20 years after the fire. Mea Culpa.

wouldn't the cold frozen ground make the hot rocks cool off almost instantly?
@thesurvivaluniversity
@thesurvivaluniversity 7 лет назад
It wouldn't do it instantly but yes you certainly would lose some heat to the ground but continued use of hot rocks and a sustained fire in your shelter for a time would thaw and dry out the ground. If you did not intend to stay in a shelter for long enough to do that, I would place the hot rocks on a pile of sticks to form a somewhat insulated barrier to the cold ground.

Great vid :-) what kind of tools did you take with you?
@thesurvivaluniversity
@thesurvivaluniversity 7 лет назад
A chainsaw ;) Had to get this built in a hurry for a class but I could do this with what I typically carry in my survival kit, which is a Silky handsaw, my knives and a hatchet. I could do it without any tools but it would take substantially longer.

@coloradomountainmansurviva5484
PIETHENINJA I run classes just outside of Cripple Creek. That's west of Colorado Springs if you are unfamiliar with the area. I'm maybe 1.5 hour drive from you?
@Sailor376also
@Sailor376also 7 лет назад
You can also use the generator running in the back ground to heat the shelter. I apologize,, a bit catty of me,,, but the shear number of small straight trees you cut,,, 100,, 200,,? . It bothers me.
@coloradomountainmansurviva5484
Sailor376also we have over 1000 acres. There's a huge amount of small trees densely packed together. Did you hear about Waldo Canyon Fire or Black Forest Fire in Colorado? Over 1000 homes burned because they didn't do any fire mitigation. Have you been to the western slope of Colorado? Millions of acres of beetle kill trees because there is no responsible forest management going on. I'm making my little section of the world healthier and safer. If a fire rolls through, my forest has a better chance of being saved.
