Shelter is one of your top priorities in a survival situation or even just when you are headed out in the back country and are ready to stop for the night and make camp. When it is cold outside, the Super Shelter is one of your best options. In this video I show you what materials you need to make a Super Shelter variant and how to build it.
The original Super Shelter was originally developed by wilderness survival instructor Mors Kochanski in the 1970's, and it is still the best improvised shelter for cold weather. Mors passed

Great video! Thank you for mentioning the estimated setup time, other videos failed to mention that. Winter camping in a super shelter in a few days.

Love it. Lightweight and longer-termish shelter.I had been thinking on something like this. Sticking the emergency blanket on the black plastic was great thinking. A couple of internal ribs would keep the inside in place. Will keep watching to see how this holds up over time. Thanks from Australia
@coloradomountainmansurviva5484
this really is a great shelter. Some ribs inside would certainly help. I like to keep a bit of an air barrier between the two layers for some extra insulation. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching

This is a nice modification of the original Mors design for places that lack sufficient flexible materials to build the frame. Do you find that moisture accumulation is an issue? The original design used parachute nylon for the bulk of the covering, with plastic reserved for only the side facing the fire. This uncoated nylon allowed moisture to escape from the shelter.

Thanks Stanley. This is shelter created by Mors is one of my favorite and most effective for cold, wet situations. I have slept in this modification in both the Ozarks during heavy rains and the Rocky Mountains during snow and have not found that moisture was an issue. Maybe I was just lucky but I do tend to leave a small opening at one end of the plastic to let fresh air in and allow moisture escape.

Living in cold lots of snow Canada with -40*c I have used this style but much more insulated and the dome style Hands down dome is the way to go and can be made no problem with out flexible materials This style is not that efficient at all in cold wet weather in comparison

I was just w ondering if you were camping somewhere where it was super cold 20 30 below zero in the night do you think you could bring hot rocks into the shelter to help heat it because I know they get really hot and they stay hot for a while
@coloradomountainmansurviva5484
Yes! Absolutely put hot rocks in your shelter if it is super cold outside. Obviously be careful not to burn yourself but a big hot rock down by your feet and one or two up by your body core will help keep you warm for yours. We also recommend boiling water in a non-insulated metal canteen, seal it tightly, put a sock over it and stuff it in your sleeping bag.

nice.seems though with the leaves on it the black bags aren't necessary,? unless its just to hold the mylar
@coloradomountainmansurviva5484
the leaves arent completely necessary for this shelter. Its a good camouflage and does add extra insulation if its really cold. Leaves arent always easy to come by though, depending on your forest type, so you can certainly go without them on this shelter.

Good video guys. Question, Instead of using clear plastic for your front, could you substitute black plastic? Would the effects be the same? Thanks
@thesurvivaluniversity
@thesurvivaluniversity 4 года назад
It would be similar but dont think it would be the same. The clear plastic lets the son through which will warm the inside fast. I honestly havent tried it so not sure but the science behind it leads me to believe that the clear is better. I will try it one of these days.
