An in-depth guide on how to make a formicarium (ant farm). In this third episode of the series, we show you how to design an “all in one” using AAC (Autoclaved Aerated Concrete). The end designs offer the ants both a nesting medium, and an outworld (foraging area), the essential components in which an ant colony will need to thrive! Live Australian ant colonies are then introduced to these formicaria. Including...Funnel Ants (Aphaenogaster longiceps), Rainbow Ants (Iridomyrmex sp.) and Toothless Bull Ants (Myrmecia piliventris). Only the simplest of tools and materials are required to follow along. So, we sure hope you do!

The most disturbing thing I learned about ants. Was actually how here, in my country, some caterpillars feed on ant larvae, without being stopped by the ants themselves. The caterpillars secrete a sort of honeydew (I don't know the exact name) to please the ants outside of their nest. The ants walk all over the caterpillar, leaving their scent on it. Afterwards, masked in ant scent, it simply walks into the nest, unharmed by unsuspecting ants, and starts feeding on their larvae.

The most disturbing things ants do I find is that honey pot ants (Myrmecocystus sp) raid enemy nests and rip the heads off other repletes and drink from it as a keg, sometimes they even drag the repletes to their nests and slowly chew through the ants head. Definitly the most disturbing thing ants do in my opinion

You made some beautiful ant worlds. I don’t keep ants myself but I nevertheless find them extremely interesting creatures. By browsing the internet and watching videos on RU-vid I’ve learned a lot of things about them that are quite remarkable. I always wondered how the first generation was fed seen the queen doesn’t leave the nest to forage. I found out that when the queen has her first larvae she feeds them with her into trophic eggs converted wing muscles. Well, that is an amazing thing to do.

Awesome designs! The most disturbing thing i found out was the behavior of species formica sanguinea in relation to the Lomechusa(beetle). These ants(apparently) are so addicted to Lomechusas secretions that they tolerate them eating their brood. In case of alarm, they even tend to bring the Lomechusas brood into safety before their own(#addictants?). It feels like I will always find out something new that fascinates me about ants!

Velppp I read you have Messor ants: I caught my very first queen a month ago, and she is a Messor capitatus. She has some larvae and eggs now. Do you think they are good for beginners like me?
@Velppp
@Velppp 6 лет назад
Yes they are very simple to keep. I have one colony of Polygynous Messor barbarus, one of capitatus and few more barbarus queens... So, they stress very easily when there is a vibration. It's their only downside for me. Otherwise they just need seeds, some proteins and a place between 22 and 28 °C. The egg become an ant in 30-60 days. This depends of the size of the new ant, and the heating temperature. You are not force to water the nest. If you provide them a source of water they will live perfectly with it. Personally I water the nest only when there is few ants drinking in the reservoir of water. ie each 2 - 4 days. Those ants are convenient when you want to go in vacation. They can live few weeks without any care if they have enough water and food =). Voilà, ask me if you want to know something else =) ps: I advise you to keep them in an non-acrylic setup. Because this material provide very well vibrations... And that's not very good for them... For Messors I prefer Ytong for it's ability to scatter vibrations.
@lasigna0212
@lasigna0212 6 лет назад
Velppp Thanks! I made a cork nest for them, but I think I'll make one out of AAC and put in the Messor and I'll keep the cirk nest for a Crematogaster queen.

I've got two things that i was very disturbed about when I found out about it: 1. That some Ant species can have slaves (e.g. Polyergus lucidus). And one of the main goals of such colonies is to find other colonies and enslave their workers and steal their brood. But I think its cool and interesting too! 2. That Carpenter Ants can destroy houses and cause a lot of damage. Many people See those Ants as pests but i think their pretty beautiful and in want to Catch a Carpenter Queen at the next nuptial flight and raise a small colony (any Name suggestions?) But that does not keep me from Loving Ants and it reminds me of the giant impact and the importance Ants have for our Environment!

Aka Ventus No mate, insects are placed within the kingdom animalia, which means they are animals. Insects are arthropods, which means if insects are not aninals, then arthropods like crabs and lobsters are not animals.

Most disturbing thing I find about ants is how they act like robots that are driven for protecting and sustaining their nest at all costs, even if it means their death they'll happily throw their life away to protect the nest
