That would be a cool concept if you made the two tanks with hardscapes that seem to flow from one tank into the next, but with fish that don't do well together so you can still have both.

Your video has been very helpful for me as I go in search of a stand for a 75 gallon tank I’m getting quite soon! I’d looked at countless store bought ready made stands and didn’t really like any of them, especially after reading reviews. So I went in search of a heavy wooden table! Found a couple but didn’t know if they would be exactly suitable but based on this video the one I liked best IS quite suitable! It’s built much like that last one you showed with no center piece, except this has 4x4s for the legs! Very stout!

Joey: "So to give you just a rough idea, a tank weighs about 10-12 pounds per gallon" The metric part of the world: "Or you know, 1 kilogram per 1 liter of water"
@UlasAktok
@UlasAktok 3 года назад
He is taking into account the weight of the glass or acryllic and the weight of the substrate and decor in that estimation though
@MassisPipes
@MassisPipes 3 года назад
@@UlasAktok I know, but those too are a LOT easier in metric to estimate. Rock is around 1600kg/m3 or for easier measuring: 1600kg per 1000L. If you can only fit 240L of water in your 300L aquarium, you know there's 60L or 96kg of rock/sand in there. Or glass weighs 15kg/m² for 6mm, so a 1x1x0.5m aquarium weighs 45kg. There's just a lot less guessing required in metric, because everything relates in easy ways :-) Still kudos to Joey for building all this, he does an amazing job and I love watching him :+)

Good video. Got a few good tips for my next build. Although, I much prefer the "guides" to be the full height, then they directly support from the tank to the floor, with no shear loads and no connections, especially if you put a piece of ply on top to help distribute the weight more evenly. Looking at the construction of available stands, I prefer the DIY stands not as much for the savings, but the commercially made ones are not build nearly as robustly. I think their safety factor is more like 1.1 than 4 times! I bought a used 120G with stand; looks very nice with pretty trim, but once I looked at the structure I was like never getting a commercial stand again!

Food for thought… A nail has much more shearing strength than a screw, while a screw has much more tensile strength than a nail. Always look at what direction force will be applied and choose the right fastener… and always use waterproof glue to back up any wood joints you assemble with a nail or screw, 99% of the time the wood will fail before the glue joint does.

Hey Joey, great video!! I'm a big fan. I'm going to build one just like this. Couple questions: - If the stand is not level: can I simply put some shims under it to adjust? - Could I add legs under this? If so, anything to watch out for? - If I wanted to make a walnut wood casing for it, should I simply attach it to the frame directly? (screws, dominoes, glue)

Thanks so much this helped with my overall design i was pretty close on my own but double checking i fixed my design. And can be on my way to building this. Instead of plywood im doing 2x8 top put them together then stain and poly it all . Then add the bottom shelf. 50 long , 20 wide and 30 tall . My tank is 21 inch high by said and done my height should be around 52ish depending how thick the 2x8s are i just dont recall till i get em. This helped immensely with my thought process to tackle this way better. Awesome video. I would of liked to see more close ups. Top view its nice to see how its all tied in together than just looking a few feet back. I paused it and was able to pick out the design. Thanks so much!
