I watched your video, went and bought a cattle panel, posts and post pusher. Husband came home, put it up and we love it. Just need to put up more. We decided to make extra gardens by the street this year and offer free tomatoes and maybe cucumbers. We'll have our own in the back gardens. I had an herb/flower/vegetable/floral design business for 20 years and closed it some years back. Now in old age, we are 71 and 80 (still healthy and vigorous) we have decided to start growing again and also sharing with passersby. I think kind gestures are a way of connecting and giving back after what our world has been through this winter/spring. Happy growing everyone. Thank you Roots and Refuge for the great videos. Write that book! Update 3/7/22. I lost my prince last August at 82. He is sorely missed but would want me to keep doing everything we loved together. I'm now 73, getting ready to garden in the spring, painting and writing and learning to produce videos!

Me too. Years ago, I had 3 panels, laid 2 beside each other, zip tied the center and made a long teepee. Then the other one I thought would be cool as an arch. I tied one end to a fence, tied rope on the other end and pulled it over till a nice arch. I tied the bottoms together (but about 4' apart) so I could move it anywhere. This was before it was such a big deal!

Lol! What class of zip Ties?! Look for the ones that are UV-resistant, IF you want them to last more than a couple to few years in weather....especially if exposed to sun. They get brittle. The UV-resistant zip ties are harder to find in the numerous zip tie displays at big box hardware stores, and those do last several years more when exposed to weather. Love the cattle panel arches!

Great video. But I use a long auger bit on my drill to drill the holes into the ground for the t posts. A 12 inch hole for the T post takes about 20 minutes including scooping up the loosened soil. I'm a 67 year old woman with back problems so a heavy T Post driver is out of the question. Letting the drill do all the work saves my back, neck and shoulders.
@RootsandRefugeFarm
@RootsandRefugeFarm 6 лет назад
The t-post driver is really hard for me, especially in the raised beds. I don't have the strength to bring it down hard enough when its up above my shoulders like that. Thats a great tip about the drill. I'll keep that in mind if ever I don't have a helping hand around!

@jjames9341 6 лет назад
Glad to help. I have dry, hard dirt so I had to wet the soil first to make it much easier. I had to wet the ground and let it soak in, drill, remove excess dirt, wet again and repeat until you have a 12 inch hole, which is the recommended depth for a 6 ft t post.

Wonderful 🌻 I could see putting a panel at the back of a couple panels and adding a bench or chairs to make a great rest spot all covered with various scented vines.

I use cattle panels for so many different projects around the farm. I sometimes call them handy panels they are solid and inexpensive. Your garden is beautiful thank you for sharing!

We love cattle panels! Actually, make good use of discarded metal fence wire, too.... have scrounged old wire fencing for many projects over the years. One place we lived and kept ducks, had a 4’ chain link fence around 1/3 acre. Good start, but needed more to contain poultry. We used recycled 4’ wide wire fence, bent it into an arch lengthwise, then overlaid that with smaller mesh chicken wire. Zip tied the mesh tunnel to the chain link fence for support, and staked and zip tied the tunnel to the stakes along the edge facing the yard, to prevent predators lifting it. The tunnel must be tall enough for the poultry to fully stand, and wide enough for them to expand their wings. The chicken wire must be small enough to prevent chicks or ducklings escaping. Our ducks loved running the circumference of the yard..far more room than many so-called “free range” places give. They ate bugs, plants,. We’d let them out into the yard to go after bugs and slugs in spring as bugs and slugs started proliferating. Then herd them back into their tunnel and nest box shed safety. Did same in fall after seasonal plants were done. In the 10 years keeping them, that was the best and safest containment we did for poultry, which required least effort, least maintenance. Happy ducks!

Hey Jess, thank you for sharing. As soon as we have our little piece of land, I will definitely use trellises and arches to do some vertical gardening. We were thinking stuff through about how to build, and we can use your tips and tricks for sure. I found t-posts and cattle panels in some store close to us, so that is covered. Thank you, I bless you. Love from The Netherlands, Diana

Thanks for the great idea I got the Trellis built out following your suggestions and it came out very well. I used a 15' Uhaul truck to carry the cattle panels and T-posts from Tractor Supply Co. I used just the regular hammer to push in the T-posts. And it was very easy to install the trellis arches then. Once set up it looks amazing and encouraging to make the best use of the Trellis. Zip Ties I bought from the electrical section of Home Depot were breaking in pieces. If any one has better suggestion, i would further strengthen them.

Thank you so much for saying how you transported those panels. I was wondering just how to do that. This was my first year growing long tomato vines and they were spilling over the tops of stakes and cages to snake along the ground! These trellises will be perfect!
