I built the chest and lid for my daughter. Made it out of MDF. She did the upholstery and did a great job. Just need to add the hinges and lid support. HomeDepot wants 48 for a single lid support. Buying 2 of them from Amazon for 29. Love the build. I think she'll be asking for more of your builds in the future.
I can't believe that out of more than 21K views only 130 comments were left! You made that whole process look so easy. I've not tried my hand at upholstery but watching you gives me confidence. Thank you.
I really appreciate that! RU-vid is an odd platform. I'm constantly confused (both for the good and bad haha) on the video performance. But either way, I love hearing that you found this helpful! Upholstery is one of my favorite "hobbies" as I don't do it a lot but I really enjoy messing around with it. You can get way more complicated and advanced with it, but much of it, I've found, is easier than you'd expect!
Just finished making this and it turned out amazing. I am not a pro this is only my second wood working project but this was so simple. Just stick to the instructions and you will be done in no time. Thank you so much for sharing this!!
Always amazed. You're build style seems so simple and easy to replicate and the outcome always looks high end beautiful. I must be a snob or really over thinking everything I do. Thanks for showing us how to keep it simple without sacrificing quality. 👍
I truly do appreciate this comment. My top priority and main goal in what I do is to show people you don’t have to make things complicated to get a nice end result. There are a lot of woodworkers who demand advanced techniques and perfection...and I think I that discourages many from trying. I like to be the opposite side of the spectrum. Hopefully I can encourage people to give it a shot and learn as you go. 😄
Excellent. You’re very good. You make it look simple yet well made. I want to make this exact bench in grey to replace a smaller one in our bathroom. Thanks for sharing.
Good morning Shara, that's a very cool project. Mixing it up with a little upholstery. That came out awsome.(like a pro).thanks for sharing 😄🤩.have a wonderful day
@@WoodshopDiaries if you ever want to try some newer wood or at least wood that I've never heard of until recently, you should check out the Roasted Walnut or Roasted Red Oak that Woodworkers source sells. I'm doing a review of it on my other channel. It finishes black and smells a little like a campfire when you cut and sand it. Beautiful way to add accent pieces without using stains.
Great build and video. Just a tip if you did not know. I usually cut foam like that with an electric carving knife. It is really easy and gives a very neat edge.
My husband and I just stumbled on your work and we are loving your DIY projects! You have great taste. Great eye for furniture! I'm enjoying reading about your journey on Woodshop Diaries. We are definitely planning on building one or two of your desks for our kids. We are homeschoolers and a stylish, timeless, and well built desk is hard to find on a budget. We are excited to start this project as a family!
I'm going to be building one of these starting Sunday. A few things I'm doing to mine is adding a diamond-tufted top (sewn in diamonds), the inside bottom and sides will also be covered with durable black fabric and the top-bottom will also be covered with the black fabric. If you are going to do any type of upholstery work I would suggest getting an air stapler. Your hand will appreciate not having the soreness from using the hand stapler.
I love upholstering! I don’t do it very often, but it’s really a lot of fun and this project is pretty easy to start out with...no experience required. You got this! 👍
Nice project, Shara. A suggestion - an electric carving knife, like those used for carving turkeys, is great for smoothly and easily cutting foam, especially if doing a bunch of cutting.
Thank you! It is easy I promise!! I did build the bed and matching nightstands (and two matching dressers, too!). You can check them all out here: www.woodshopdiaries.com/category/woodworking/diy-furniture-plans/diy-bedroom-furniture-plans/modern-bedroom-set/
Once again - magnificent, and so simple :) I thought that You are going to sew the nails in, but You have used just a hammer... another knowledge thanks to You girl :)
This turned out great! I had actually saved this video for the day I would make something like it myself. That day finally came - I finished just the other day. It was easy and looks really nice. Thanks for the tips!
Everything went well except I couldn't nail the tacks in for tufting. Maybe my foam was too thick. Is there another easy way to do this? Thanks Shara this was a great project.
Maybe your foam was too dense? Or you could be bending the tacks when you tap them in. I bent a couple, but for the most part, they went in and are still holding fine almost a year later. You can try to staple the spot down first, then tap the tack over the staple
Another simple but quality build! Love that you left your "mistske" in there.... We've ALL done similar, it's just how we recover that matters! Have you considered a track saw instead of the RipCut? My Makita SP6000 track saw gets a lot of use, and super handy when cutting a line that maybe isn't parallel or square due to scribing to existing wall.
@@WoodshopDiaries Thank you very much! Your videos will help me tremendously. I purchased my first tools a few days ago, just a jigsaw and a router. I love woodworking so I may as well try to build some easy stuff for my house :)
Right? I looked all over and couldn’t find anything I liked and happened upon the curtain. Regular window curtains or even blankets would work too! I don’t know why that didn’t occur to me before! 😅
Great design! I really like you can see the wood at the base. On a sidenote electric or cordless staplers have gotten really inexpensive. If you’re gonna be doing much more upholstery it will really save your wrist and hand.
Thank you! There’s a thousand ways to do the tufted thing...this just seemed the simplest for me. I don’t think they’ll come out, but if they do, a little tap with the hammer will put them right back in so I’m not worried about it.
Exactly! This saved me quite a bit of money (plus I couldn’t find any fabric I liked as well haha) and I have some leftover I can make matching pillow covers later if I wanted 👍
