Can't imagine that lack of shims is gonna hold up once some flower pots are sitting on there. No one is standing on it, but lots of us put fairly heavy things on window sills. This is the kind of work that makes people hate track homes. Good tips on lining it up and measuring it.
Agreed. I can't blame this guy for following the guidelines of his employer, but for him to casually justify his method by saying "Nobody is standing on these things" is lame and misleading. Everybody puts stuff on windowsills -- that's what they're for. The apron will probably keep the front edge up, but the back edge (against the window frame) will slip down on the brads once the caulk line gives way, and that won't take long after somebody moves in. Liners and casings don't need much fastening strength; sills do.
My thoughts exactly. I have cats that love sitting in the window and can definitely imagine them making the sill move. No person may be standing on the sill but a pet probably will, so shims should be used.
Hunter, I have to compliment you on your ability to articulate building concepts in a way that is relatable and easy to follow. Very thorough. You obviously know your craft. Much appreciated !!
Dude, great tutorial! Perfectly presented. Even after 35 years of experience in home renovations, one can learn something from another fellow tradie. Well done man!
Really appreciate your time watching and leaving a quick comment! 35 years that’s awesome! Glad I could show you a couple of my tricks, any questions please let me know! Have a blessed day! 😎
@@huntercarlson5446 Yes, indeed! I am almost 60 in a few months. That only confirms that you still can teach an old dog new tricks. Quite a few hints in your video which I highly appreciate. Thanks for sharing and all the best, mate!
@@VanClaaude thanks for giving me more motivation to keep making videos! Doesn’t matter what age, everyone can always learn a new trick or two! Happy real early b-day! Look forward to hearing from you in the future! 🤜🏼💥🤛🏼
I was going to have window sills done by someone that knows what they are doing, but instead I am going to make my own. Great excuse to buy new tools! Thanks man!
Wow, great tutorial. Works like a charm every time. I did 9 windows in my new home that the builder did not put in window sills. Every on perfect. Thanks!!
Dr Horton did not show that much love and affection when they built my home. My window sills are basic ASF, along with several other things in the house. Nothing is symmetrical in my home. Love your work.
I like your videos, i became to work as foreman 6 years ago i was doing fine Then i realized i was being lazy and i feel i can make more money as installer, Your videos are helping me alot !!
I appreciate that comment! Bryan and I do our best to make sure we leave a good product for the painters and then the homeowners! Thank you for watching! Have a blessed day 😎
Thank you Hunter. You are a remarkable craftsman. Thanks for being articulate, exacting, and truly instructive. Any builder would be fortunate to have you doing this work for them. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and for letting us “be there” with you.
Dude I needed this video. I’m just about to trim out my windows!! Thank you!! (Update) Followed your tutorial to a “T.” My window sills look amazing and I have you to thank! The scribe in place technique worked perfectly!!
I am so sorry I couldn’t respond to you right away! Just got back on a camping trip with no service for almost 2 weeks... You are so very welcome! I feel touched that you followed my video and now have beautiful window sills in your home, that YOU installed! You are giving me motivation to keep on going and I thank you for that! Joe if you have any questions in the future please don’t hesitate to ask! Thank you so much for bringing good vibes to my channel and I truly hope you have a blessed day! Talk to ya soon!
I can totally agree with you! All my material packs for these “track” homebuilders are always MDF for window sills. With a good finish of paint they seem to hold up “decently” for a few years, but yes if you can afford just a little more going wood is much better! Thanks for commenting! Have a blessed day 😎
Thanks for the tutorial. Builder did not put sills on any windows, and I am interested in adding some. You make it look so easy, but you are a skilled builder. I don't have the power tools to accomplish this task so I may have to hire someone to do this for my home.
Bro! You are the man. Just bought a home that has good bones, just needs some updating and I plan on doing the sills after getting the windows replaced. Thanks for the step by step. Super detailed and easy to follow
Thank you very much! I really appreciate your feedback! Let me know if you have any questions when you start your projects! Congrats on your home! Have a blessed day 😎
Thank you! My home came with (zero) windowsills in any of the windows. It was built in 1980, so maybe it was a budget skip for the previous owner (I have found ALOT of these) or it might have been out of style at the time? Either way, I want to add them so this tutorial is excellent and makes total sense!
Thank you for this video! I have a Century Communities home (in Castle Rock) that was built with a drywall sill. I ripped it out and followed your instructions and they came out amazing and it was fun to install! I did more of a modern look, but the same concept! Thanks for the great tutorial and tips!
You are welcome! Thank you for leaving detailed feedback! Completely understand with the modern look in your home as DR. Horton has a different trim style to their homes! So glad it turned out awesome as you added more detail and design to your home! Your just around the corner, I’m in the Parker area, so let me know if you have any questions in the future…more videos coming soon, just takes me a while to get them together and edited… talk to you later! 😎
Thank you for this. I am planning on doing all of ours because I HATE the drywall sills, but it didn’t even occur to me that I need to rip them out. I was thinking I could just install over it, but when we replace windows someday that would be a problem.
@@huntercarlson5446 amazing video guide, do I really need all the tools you have to cut wood or if I have to buy my first tool to cut wood which one should I get?
I appreciate your time watching and leaving a comment! I’m glad my methods are helping and are understandable! Any questions please let me know! Have a blessed day 😎
Thank you for this video!! I've watched many, but never did anyone tell me HOW to take the measurements and why. I really appreciate it...especially owning a 70 year old house. Now I'm much more confident to replace the two window sills in this house. If you ever do a barndoor or pocket door, I would watch that many times!! Plus crown molding. I can never figure out how to cut that stuff. :/ Keep the great videos coming!! :D
I want to thank you very much for taking your time to compliment the video! If you have any questions on those 2 window sills please let me know! Funny u ask...my very first video I recorded was a barn door, but I used 2 cameras and did 2 of them in the same day...long story short it is going to be an editing nightmare for me, but I will definitely work on it for the future! Crown moulding only requires a couple tricks...so I will add that to the list of future videos for sure! If you beat me to needing help on an install job with crown, once again please ask! 😎😎I hope you have a blessed day/evening!😎😎
Most youtube DIY-ers are really more entertainment than instruction. It's refreshing to see someone laying out step-by-step instructions for those of us that aren't carpenters or experienced hobbyists.
Thank you for this comment! I really am trying to do step by step on my “how to” videos so most can understand the process and likely replicate it for themselves! Please give me pointers and comments along this journey, I am open eyes and ears on what will make me a better person and better channel...thanks again Jay for your time and checking out the channel!
You are a very talented person with an amazing way of explaining everything so clearly.I rarely leave a comment but the passion and joy you share your knowledge left me with no choice but to complement you😊.It’s coming fr a woman w with no experience in Carpentry or construction work but have been watching all your uploads in a row and understanding them.I request you to please make more videos and upload them often on various projects you work on as it is very helpful to us novice people also. As someone mentioned above, please upload and teach us on crown molding and transition strips on different levels of flooring in old houses.Just subscribed
Good job Hunter 👌🏼👍🏻 I also do trim work, I do it in Portland Oregon. You are doing great, I like your approach to work. I usually put window sill along the bottom edge of the window. That is, with a window frame thickness of 1 1/2 ", we get a reveal of about 3/4", depending on the thickness of the window sill material. Thanks!
Really appreciate you leaving some feedback! Some of the windows in the homes I’m in vary on the frame thicknesses. Also the framing isn’t perfect so we have decided as a trim company to just give a standard reveal in every single window. Thus leading to a smaller reveal than 3/4”… if it was my personal home I would be matching the reveal on all 4 sides of the window, but I would have more control over the drywall or jamb extensions to do so… don’t have that time or luxury in the track homes with DR Horton unfortunately. Thank you for your inspiration, look forward to more comments in the future! Have a blessed day 😎
I love your teaching methods man. The hypothetical situation at 9:40 ish I would lightly pencil line against the square the way it is and then measure the gap from the light pencil line to the square line then I can do what I call flipping the angle if that makes sense to you.
If some of you guys are thinking or saying why he doesn’t wear safety glasses, that’s how you know he’s been doing this for a long time , safety is important but a professional knows how to cut material without geeting hurt … good job dude
Appreciate you! I do want everyone to be safe and use the proper safety equipment if they feel to do so! I might not be setting the best example on using glasses, ear protection, knee pads, mask, vacuum, but then it wouldn’t be original to my routine… Have a blessed rest of the day 😎
I really appreciate you leaving feedback and taking time to watch! I truly hope I was able to teach you something to give you motivation for a project in your home! Any questions please let me know! Have a blessed day 😎
Great vid! I'm in Castle Pines and need to do some window replacement. I can save a TON on the install if I do my own trim removal and install, and your vid has given me the confidence to DIY it from scratch if (when) I damage any pieces when removing.
I’m glad you found my video and I gave you some confidence to do it yourself! Castle Pines, I’m about 20 min away from you! Love the area you are in! Don’t hesitate with any questions you may have! I’d also be up to come meet you if it would help! Thanks for reaching out and leaving a comment! Have a blessed day 😎
Thank you so much! Trying to keep simple while still providing enough information to get the job done! Any questions don’t hesitate! Have a blessed day 😎
There's actually a way to scribe those gaps created by uneven casing work. Hold the stool against the casing at a slight angle. Hold a pencil against the wall and drag it from front to back. Use a jigsaw to follow that scribe. Got that trick from Norm Abram (the James Brown of DIY).
Love it! Thanks for sharing that trick! So many ways to get the end result, but it’s the easy and simple methods that we need to focus on! I’m gonna try your trick on the next house, see if I can gain some speed or precision in my work! Have a blessed day!
Thank you very much! Really appreciate your time watching and your feedback...if you have any questions please let me know, I’m here to help! Have a blessed day!
I understand! I don’t get to choose the material I install for every house…the builder makes that decision…thanks for watching and have a blessed day 😎
Hi Sally! Sorry it has been a few weeks since your comment for me to see it and answer...it is pretty easy with the proper tools! If you haven't already, let me know if you have any additional questions! I will get back with you much faster this time! Have a blessed day!
Right! MDF(medium density fiberboard) is very easy to swell and change form when it gets wet! That’s why the primer coats and paint are so very important to protect the integrity of the material! Thank you for your time watching and commenting! Have a blessed day!
Most the time you can use your chopsaw if you’ve got a 12 inch to cut your ears out and then use your jigsaw for cutting inward. It works better and you get a cleaner cut.
Awesome video man! Just purchased a house that we want to add window trim, but thinking the current ears are too short for it to look right. I’m assuming I would need to Replace the stool with the width of the trim determining what the ears width should be on each side? A video of placing trim around the sides and top of these windows would be awesome!!!
Sorry it took a while to answer…you are exactly right on replacing the stool to make the ears bigger! You would want to add the width of your trim and an additional 1/2” (I personally want to see the stool wider than the casing) Unfortunately I don’t do a lot of jamb extending and casing for windows, just the stool and apron. But I will get some footage the next time I get the chance! Thank you for your support and hope this helps! If you have more questions I’ll get back to you faster! Have a blessed day 😎
Appreciate you watching and leaving a comment! The back edge of the sill is held up by the nails and caulking from the painter…it might seem fragile, but you should be able to place any picture or plant or whatever you store on the sill and have no problem. The only thing I change is a window sill where a person can get in and out of…(egress window in basement, a window that accesses the roof, etc.) in this case I will use shims to secure the window sill in case some ends up stepping on the sill… Might seem a little fragile from the video how it is installed, but I assure you it is strong enough to hold whatever can be stacked on top, just not strong enough for a step 😉 Thank you for your time, any questions please let me know! Have a blessed day 😎
Help!. I like the video and explanations, but I'll be installing stained and finished boards and can't just throw in a bunch of nails wherever. What nails and nailing tool should I use on true 1" (5/4) boards that have been carefully stained and finished. Any suggestions appreciated. Thx
question, for example, if you have 5'' on the left side and 5''1/2 on the right, how would you cut to stand both sides with 1'1/2 in front? thank you for your time and share your work.
Hi, thanks for the tutorial. I've recently took off and old plastic window sill and it looks like it was put on some sort of adhesive, i need to put it back but do you know what I can use to secure it in place? I don't think nails would do in this case :D Also why do you leave that gap underneath the wood (where you put your screwdriver)? Thanks :)
For your plastic material I would use an adhesive like Liquid Nail. You may have to buy a caulking gun as well if you don’t already have one. Place a decent amount of adhesive on your plastic sill and place it into position, then press down firmly to smoosh the adhesive and let sit for a few hours to dry. If I nailed the sill material to the framing and didn’t leave any gap, my reveal from the sill material and the window frame wouldn’t be consistent in every window of the house. My focus is to keep the reveal the same at every window, so the gap left underneath changes from window to window. I hope that makes sense…thanks for watching and have a blessed day 😎
Thank you! I’ve had issues where my window sill/stool didnt get painted and got wet from a rain storm and had to replace it from swelling…but I have never had an issue when the MDF is fully caulked and painted. The paint does a great job repelling the water. Let’s say there is standing water over a period of time like under a flower pot or something it could eventually eat through the paint and damage the product…this could also damage wood and both would need to be sanded and re-finished. Just my opinion, I’m sure others will say to never use MDF, but I don’t make the product decisions when it comes to these builders. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and have a blessed day 😎
Appreciate your comment and time! I don’t use the battery nail gun because of the amount of nails shot each day...the air pressured guns last longer for me over time, they are quicker in shooting more nails per minute, and they are cheaper to replace. Now if I was just a homeowner doing a couple projects at the house battery powered all the way! Any more questions I’m glad to help! Have a blessed day!

I get $15/window sill for installation. Usually there is about 15- 20 windows in a house… rates could easily vary depending on where you live. Have a blessed day 😎
